Modern wireless communication protocols like HIPERLAN 2, IEEE 802.11a etc. support high data rates of the order of 54 Mbps and have strict timing requirements. Although protocols define the communication rules, they do not address critical design issues like hardware/software (HW/SW) partitioning and the implementation of different algorithms, which have a critical impact on the system performance. We have developed a platform independent flexible system model based on the HIPERLAN 2 data link control (DLC) protocol that allows easy experimenting with HW/SW partitioning and different algorithms. Our design methodology allows performance evaluation at the system level as well as path to HW/SW implementation. The simulation results presented give good information on the computational complexity of different components and on the HW/SW partitioning of the HIPERLAN 2 DLC layer. The HW/SW partitioning results have been verified with a working demonstrator and the object oriented model can be easily extended for future protocols.

Pulsewidth modulation (PWM) is widely used as an efficient power transfer mechanism in switch mode power supply dc to dc conversion, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), Class D audio power amplification, and in speed and torque control of industrial machine drives. For this reason very accurate and efficient simulation models of these industrial devices based on a power dispatch PWM kernel, which is a non linear process, are required during the computer aided design phase for performance related prediction and evaluation before hardware prototyping and large scale production begins. This is particularly important in the integrated circuit design of high fidelity Class D audio amplifiers and in embedded high performance industrial motor drives systems for robotic applications. In this paper a new mathematical model for PWM simulation and analysis is presented which is based on a novel concept of a modulated single Fourier series (MFS) time function. The validity of this analytical Fourier model is first proven and the accuracy is then checked by simulating the action of a classical natural sampled PWM analog comparator modulator fed with a triangular carrier and a variety of arbitrary non periodic signals. Results are presented to establish the accuracy of the MFS strategy in high performance industrial brushless motor drive (BLMD) simulation, instead of classical iterative solutions of analog comparator modulator operation for PWM representation, with experimental test data.

Owing to the high aspect ratios and small radii of curvature, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit excellent field emission characteristics, which is very advantageous for the field emission display (FED) applications. In FED design, the triode structures are more attractive for their lower driving voltage and higher light efficiency. Recently, a new CNT-based triode structure, i.e., planar triode structures, was proposed and exhibited good characteristics. In this design, the lateral gate electrode generates the transverse electric fields to pull out the electrons from the neighboring emitters. But how the display resolution affected by the bias conditions of the gate electrode and by the electron beams diverged in the y-direction is not clear yet. In this paper, these problems are investigated via computer simulation.

Time- and temperature-dependent thermo-mechanical modeling of a packaging molding compound and its effect on packaging process stresses

For reliable virtual thermo-mechanical prototyping of electronic packages appropriate descriptions of the mechanical behavior of the constituent materials are essential. In many packages molding compounds are used for encapsulation and underfill to provide environmental protection and/or to improve the package thermal mechanical reliability. Therefore, among others, the availability of appropriate constitutive models for various epoxy-molding compounds is one of the requirements for computational prototyping. As there is a large variability of available molding compounds, it is essential to be able to experimentally establish the model parameters in an efficient manner. Because of the implied simplicity, linear visco-elastic models combined with the time-temperature superposition theory are mostly used in thermo-mechanical simulations. Among the various experimental possibilities to efficiently establish the model parameter functions, in the present paper the use of unidirectional creep testing is worked out for a chosen molding compound. Here isothermal one-day creep experiments at different temperatures (ranging below and above the glass transition temperature of the compound) are performed. The tensile creep compliance and the time-dependent Poisson's ratio of the material at different temperatures are successfully used to construct visco-elastic master curves. As the Poisson's ratio shows a significant change during a creep or relaxation test, its effect in partly constraint situations (as in packages) will be evident. Therefore it is not reliable to approximate this variable using a constant value. Further the visco-elastic model of the material is implemented in a finite element program and verified by means of a shear stress relaxation experiment and a creep experiment both under nonisothermal conditions. The accurate modeling of weak avalanche breakdown of HBTs in compact bipolar transistor models for circuit simulation is presented. Based on various device electrical characteristics that are grouped into three classes, a modified VBIC avalanche multiplication model is proposed. By simply replacing one constant avalanche model parameter with current linear dependence, the new model predicts well broad behaviors of breakdown from weak avalanche up into high level injections. Rectangular micro coils which are used in a wide range of applications (e.g. medical or automotive area) are the main components of appropriate wireless transmission systems for frequencies up to 20 MHz. As shown in previous works the self-inductance of micro coils has to be maximized to achieve a higher working distance. This can be done by the usage of a permeable layer underneath the micro coil. The existing model of the micro coil is extended by the use of the magnetic image method to include the inductance yield caused by the permeable layer. The underlying permeable layer or substrate is also modeled accurately to include eddy current phenomena and parasitic elements. To do this, the layer and the substrate respectively are divided into segments analog to the structure of the micro coil. Each segment is described by lumped elements, All elements are connected together to build up a network, which will be used to calculate the terminal impedance. An extensible TCAD optimization framework combining gradient based and genetic optimizers

The SIESTA framework is an extensible tool for optimization and inverse modeling of semiconductor devices including dynamic load balancing, for taking advantage of several, loosely connected workstations. Two gradient-based and two evolutionary computation optimizers are currently available through a uniform interface and can be combined at will. At a real world inverse modeling example, we demonstrate that evolutionary computation optimizers provide several advantages over gradient-based optimizers, due to the specific properties of the objective functions in TCAD applications. Furthermore, we shortly discuss some issues arising in inverse modeling and conclude with a comparison of gradient-based and evolutionary computation optimizers from a TCAD point of view. A new parameter extraction methodology-local ratio evaluation is presented which is well suitable for converting one model to another. An example is given for VBIC model extraction by going through SPICE Gummel-Poon (SGP) model. It is based on the fact that VBIC model is a direct enhancement and extension of SGP model. First, the standard SGP model is extracted in the standard way. Next, SGP model parameters are directly converted to those in VBIC model. Local modifications are subsequently carried out for those parameters that are affected by different equations used in the two models. Finally, new model parameters for enhanced modeling features are introduced by evaluating the difference between measurement and simulation. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
