There is a growing demand for sustainable products and systems. Sustainability encompasses environmental, social, and economic aspects, often referred to as the three pillars of sustainability. To make more sustainable design decisions, engineers need tools to predict the environmental, social, and economic impacts of products and navigate potential impact trade-offs. To capture societal adoption of technology, this article uses agentbased modeling (ABM) to predict impacts across all three pillars of sustainability and how to navigate the multidimensional impact trade space. The approach described in this article is based on three main components for the predictive modeling of product impacts and impact trade-space navigation, i) ABM of product adoption, ii) the assessment of product impacts, and iii) an approach for design decisions in the presence of impact trade-offs. The trade-space navigation uses a visual approach to find the non-dominated solutions in the product impact space. To illustrate and describe howto use the method, a case study is presented that predicts the impact of residential solar panels in a region of the United States under various scenarios. The findings of the case study can help policymakers understand suitable implementation strategies for residential solar panels while considering the impact trade-offs involved.

The measurement of the dissolved ozone concentration is beneficial in various areas, where ozone is applied, such as medicine, disinfection, food processing, and wastewater treatment. Especially for medical ozone therapy, the measurement directly before and during the treatment is essential to avoid over- and under-dosing. For the wide range application of ozone measurement during medical therapy and in research, low-cost and reproducible measurement devices are indispensable. We present a low-cost photometer that measures the ozone concentration with UV photometry. It consists mainly of 3D-printed parts, while all other parts are commercially available. The root mean squared percentage error of the designed photometer is 14.68% and the root mean squared error is 1.04mg l(-1). We measured concentrations between 0mg l(-1) and 19 mg l(-1), since higher concentrations cannot be produced with the ozone generator used. In principle, however, higher concentrations can also be measured with the photometer, such as the concentrations typical in ozone therapy of up to 30 mgl(-1). We achieve good measurement results with the photometer in comparison with a commercial reference measuring instrument for dissolved ozone, although the reference instrument has a mean square error of 8.2%, but is more expensive by a factor of 17 than the photometer presented here. Low-cost instruments, such as the photometer, provide accurate and inexpensive measurements that are adaptable to a wide range of applications. For example, the photometer can be used in medicine for ozone therapy. The ozone concentration can be measured directly before the injection and thus before the treatment.

designers usually assess only a few house design alternatives simulating their energy use, due to time and cost constraints. This study aims at developing a machine learning (ML)-based generative design (GD) framework to automate the design process of Florida's detached residences while optimizing their energy performance. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed using the machine learning platform TensorFlow along with some Python-based Keras libraries based on a big dataset of around 17,000 newly constructed detached residences in Florida between the years 2009 and 2021. The GD framework was established using Autodesk Dynamo and Autodesk Revit internal generative design tool that uses the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-ii). The ANN model was created to predict the required capacities of the cooling and heating systems in detached houses considering 10 independent variables relating to the house geometry and its energy performance. The ANN was then integrated within the GD framework for performance evaluation purposes. The findings of this study included a fully automated design of energy-efficient detached houses greatly reducing the financial strain and time consumed by designers/developers using traditional techniques.
