Over the years, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and a collaborative network of national agencies, institutes, and universities have continually upgraded the VLT and its array of telescopes, accompanied by various cutting-edge instruments and modules. Among the next generation of instruments, there is CUBES (Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph), a mid-resolution spectrograph working in the UV ground-based band (300-400 nm). The work presented here is a proceeding on the CUBES hardware dependability and maintainability analysis up to the successful Preliminary design Review (passed in December 2022) and some forthcoming updates from the ongoing Final design phase. The work has been developed during the design phases in order to assess the dependability of the System, as part of the Very Large Telescope, and to verify the compliance with the System requirements. The goal has been the identification of the criticalities and potential failure and the definition of the basics of maintainability in view of the last phases of the project, with the aim to keep the system in operation with high availability. Furthermore, the document provides the functional analysis of the System, with a deep focus on the influence of the "degraded modes" on the reliability of the System. Reliability analysis plays a crucial role in ensuring the components of the CUBES project meet stringent performance expectations. It assesses the likelihood of component failure, providing insights into potential vulnerabilities and enabling proactive problem-solving to enhance overall system reliability.

With the wide use of brushless DC motor (BLDCM) in industry, traffic and home applications, higher requirements are put forward for the performance and stability of its control system. Although the traditional PID control method is simple and easy to use, it may not perform well in the face of nonlinear and time-varying BLDCM systems, especially in the face of external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. In order to improve the control effect of BLDMC system, this paper devotes itself to designing an advanced speed control system, which adopts sliding mode control as the main control strategy. SMC can effectively suppress uncertainties and external disturbances by introducing sliding mode surface, thus improving the robustness and dynamic performance of the system. However, the traditional sliding mode control will bring bad jitter phenomenon because of high frequency switching. In order to reduce the occurrence of jitter, this topic adopts the integral sliding mode method for motor speed control to ensure the accuracy and reliability of brushless DC motor control. © 2024 SPIE.

The antibody is a type of protein in the human immune system that plays an important role in identifying and neutralizing antigens. However, the known types of antibodies are very limited. The emergence of computational protein design has to some extent addressed the drawbacks of traditional design methods, and deep diffusion probability models have been proven to be capable of antibody sequence and structure design. Existing models lack a prototype system, making it more difficult to implement them in practical applications, and the operational complexity of the models poses challenges. To overcome these challenges, we have designed and developed an antibody generation system based on a diffusion model, aiming to assist users in collaborative antibody sequence and structure design. This system integrates design, relaxation optimization, and evaluation functions, and is user-friendly, enabling users to easily carry out the entire process of antibody design. Through this system, users can rapidly and accurately generate antibody sequences and structures with specific functions and characteristics, thereby improving design efficiency and success rate. © 2024 SPIE.

Twisted interface structure of two-dimensional materials offers nearly limitless platforms for the design of novel metamaterials. The natures of these twisted systems depend strongly on the twisted angle between adjacent layers. Due to the intriguing optical and electronic properties observed in twisted graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, this field has attracted increased attention. Here, we employ conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) to investigate the vertical conductivity of small twisted bilayer MoS2 (ST-MoS2). We find that different atomic configurations exhibit distinct vertical conductivities, and it exhibits uniform conductivity within the domains, providing insights into the design and optimization of its optical and electronic natures. © 2024 SPIE.

We design, fabricate, and characterize a polarization-insensitivity 8-bit optical tunable delay line (OTDL) on the 3-μm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform, employing low-loss waveguide spirals and rapid-calibrated integrated optical switches. The spirals integrate mode converters and Euler bends, have high fabrication tolerance, low wavelength-sensitivity, and propagation loss as low as 0.32 dB/cm within 140 nm bandwidth. The 4-cm-length waveguide spiral has polarization dependent loss (PDL) less than 0.3 dB within 140nm bandwidth. OTTDL utilizes optical switches with extinction ratio (ER) of up to 50 dB for path switching. The switch integrated multimode interferences (MMIs), thermo-optic phase shifter and variable optical attenuators (VOAs). VOAs not only enhance the delay signal-to-noise ratio, but also facilitate rapid calibration in OTDLs. With maximum delay time of 3570 ps and resolution of 14 ps, our OTDL holds significant promise for future applications, particularly in the integration of delay line arrays for microwave photon radar systems. © 2024 SPIE.

At present, the main way to use solar energy still stays in photovoltaic power generation, which has the disadvantages of high cost and low efficiency. With the development and popularization of optical fiber technology, it is possible to use optical fiber to transmit sunlight. However, due to its light attenuation problem, it is only suitable for short distance transmission, such as solar optical fiber lighting systems in buildings. This paper designs and develops a solar optical fiber lighting system that is suitable for building daylighting and is relatively cheap. The system includes a concentrating system, a tracing system, a transmission system, and a remote control system. In this paper, the important problems of focusing errors in the system are analyzed, and five main types of focusing errors are discussed. Taking the diameter of the big end of the light cone as the synthetical systematic error of the focusing, two distribution modes of the systematic error are discussed/ Aiming at the weighted distribution of the system error, the tracking accuracy of the tracking system is discussed. The experiment proves that the required tracking accuracy is obtained by using proportional control and PID control respectively. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

In order to meet the design requirements of more compact and portable laser detection system, the parameters optimization design of lightweight structure is carried out for the receiving system with large quality proportion. Firstly, based on the index requirements of the system for performance and structure, the scheme of Cassegrain optical receiving system is selected, and it is clear that the receiving system is an all-aluminum card mechanical structure. Then, through the numerical analysis of the mode and static force of the receiving lens, the main reflector is selected as the optimization object. After that then the multi wheel topology optimization design is carried out by using the finite element analysis method, and the dynamic simulation analysis of the whole receiving system is carried out. Finally, it is determined that the lightweight hole form of the back opening of the main reflector is fan-shaped, the thickness is 4mm, and the weight loss rate is 31.4%. Under certain vibration and impact environment conditions, the system structure still has good stability. According to the design and optimization results, the processing and assembly of the lens are completed. Through alignment test and surface inspection, the PV value of the main reflector is 2.293λ, and the RMS is0.509λ (λ=1064nm). Both of them meet the requirements of optical design. It shows that the accuracy of the main reflector surface improved by top1ology optimization can meet the application requirements. which has a certain reference significance for the structural design in the field of aircraft laser ranging. © 2023 SPIE.

Laser altimeter is the key configuration to improve the accuracy of the mapping satellite, the position accuracy of the laser spot emitted by the laser transmitter and the pointing accuracy of the laser beam received by the laser receiver will directly affect the plane and elevation positioning accuracy of the mapping satellite. Because the change of the spot position of the reference beam and the measurement beam can be calculated, the direction measurement of the laser altimeter can be realized. According to the need of quantitative measurement of the laser altimeter emitting and receiving spot direction, an optical system of direction measurement is designed in this paper. The technical indicators: The optical system focal length is 396mm, F number is 4.5, field of view is 2°× 2°,the operating wave band are 532nm±5nm 660±5nm 880±5nm. The encircled energy of the 532nm±5nm in 3×3 pixel is above 92% all over the field of view, the encircled energy of the 660nm±5nm in 3×3 pixel is above 90% all over the field of view, the encircled energy of the 880nm±5nm in 3×3 pixel is above 89% all over the field of view. The absolute distortion of the optical system is less than 1μm the non-parallel degree of the chief ray in the whole field of view of the optical system is less than 0.015°. At present, considering the calibration error, the centroid extraction error, the optical component thermal deformation error and the laser jitter error, it can be calculated by the error synthesis theory that the pointing accuracy of the laser altimeter directional measurement optical system is about 0.36″. © COPYRIGHT SPIE.

The rapid advancements in autonomous driving technology necessitate the extensive deployment of automotive radars operating within the 77-81 GHz millimeter-wave band in the forthcoming years. In contrast to earlier Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radars, Phase-Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW) radars exhibit notable improvements in processing speed and flexibility, offering superior range and velocity resolution. These enhancements are critical for the precise detection and interpretation of dynamic and complex traffic scenarios. This paper initially presents the simulation and testing of algorithms for range and speed measurement using single-input single-output (SISO) PMCW millimeter-wave radar. Building upon these results, further simulations incorporating multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems utilizing Hadamard codes are conducted to augment PMCW radar performance. The final phase of this study involves implementing the relevant signal processing algorithms on a custom-developed digital signal processor (DSP) named SWIFT. Experimental findings demonstrate that PMCW radar significantly mitigates multipath effects and clutter, maintaining high performance in complex environments. Furthermore, the algorithms executed on the DSP meet the anticipated performance standards. The proposed methodology not only validates the theoretical framework but also establishes a foundation for future hardware implementation. © 2025 SPIE.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, its application in aircraft design has become a critical means of enhancing design efficiency and innovation. In order to explore the specific application pathways of AI technology in the domain of aircraft design and evaluate its actual impact on design process optimization, this paper provides an overview of the current application status of key AI technologies in aircraft design. It analyzes specific cases where AI technology has improved the efficiency of aircraft design and forecasts the future challenges and development trends in AI aircraft design. The results of the study indicate that AI is currently widely applied in aircraft control systems, configuration optimization, and fault prediction and health management. Data-driven design scheme generation can significantly enhance the accuracy of aircraft design, shorten the development cycle, and to some extent, predict and mitigate potential risks. © 2024 SPIE.
