It is essential to divide various layers of the retina to correctly diagnose and treat retinal diseases. Using optical coherence tomography (OCT) images and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), this study describes a novel deep learning approach for automatically separating retinal layers. The suggested method employs a U-Net architecture that has been trained on OCT dataset containing images of retinal segmentation and disease diagnosis, as well as their corresponding comments. The provided data was used to train this design with U-Net training data. When a data-based method is evaluated using a public dataset, it is possible to obtain results that are considered cutting-edge in terms of both accuracy and processing speed. The results suggest that using CNN to distinguish the layers of the retina could enhance both the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. This has the potential to be a significant advancement in the field. © 2023 IEEE.

Maintenancing batteries and long distance wireless charging for Internet of Things (IoT) devices are challenging because of the shrinking size and always-on functions required by the devices. Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting systems can convert RF energy into a stable and usable direct current (DC). However, traditional rectifier designs fail to achieve sufficient efficiency with ultra-low input power, so we need to deploy reconfigurable logic circuits to adaptively adjust the topology of the rectifier to improve the performance. In this paper, we discussed both Dickson-type and cross-coupled differential drive (CCDD)-type rectifiers with diverse reliable reconfigurable designs by embedding with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control elements, provide flexibility and enhance power conversion efficiency (PCE) and power dynamic range (PDR). Despite these advancements, challenges such as increased chip area, power loss due to additional switches, and design complexity still remain. We also discussed future works which should focus on exploring the design optimization and modeling to achieve more efficient and compact RF energy harvesting solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

The creation and implementation of a system that bridges visible light communication (VLC) with selected identifiers, envisioned as informational beacons, are outlined. This system is adept at controlling LED panels and orchestrating communication between LED lights and the receiving unit, laying the groundwork for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication systems tailored for precise positioning. The design and assessment of test-bed requirements cater to the anticipation of future V2V optical wireless communication scenarios. Through analysis, it is demonstrated that commercial outdoor lighting can be effectively utilized for V2V positioning, capable of operating under daylight with a data transmission rate of 100 Kbps. Crucially, the system's ability to accurately detect positioning beacons facilitates the localization of vehicles within designated areas of interest, paving the way for the advancement of V2V communication technologies. This comprehensive approach not only validates the feasibility of using VLC for vehicle positioning but also sets a precedent for future developments in V2V communication systems. © 2024 Owner/Author.

This paper proposes simple quantum [[9],[1],[3]] error correction codes for quantum systems beyond qubits, focusing on quantum ternary digits (qutrits) that represent the simplest higher-dimensional systems for future quantum technologies. Although qutrit-based systems offer larger capacity information over 2-dimensional systems, the challenge of identifying commuting stabilizers for constructing error correction codes becomes more difficult as the dimensionality increases or when working with a large number of qutrits. We design qutrit codes based on the generalized Pauli group and investigate the underlying structure, including shift, phase, and rotation operators. We successfully create suitable stabilizer codes that detect and correct qutrit errors. Furthermore, we (i) identify operators in qutrit, which are selected from various matrix interpretations for higher-dimensional systems, (ii) propose stabilizers for 9-qutrit error correction codes, and (iii) design a new 9-qutrit quantum circuit for communications. Our study is expected to contribute a foundational basis for possible future theoretical and experimental advancements in quantum computing, communications, and code-based cryptography in higher dimensional systems. © 2024 IEEE.

This work focuses on the use of Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from pinewood sawdust loaded in cellulose acetate (CA) membranes produced by electrospinning. These membranes were tested for the removal of two organic dyes, methylene blue (MB) and methylene violet (MV), from water effluents. The adsorption capacity of electrospun adsorbent significantly improved due to the presence of a low concentration of CDQs (1% w/w). In comparison with CA electrospun membranes without CQDs, the loaded membranes showed an improvement of the adsorption capacity equal to 160% in the case of MB and 300% in the case of MV. Therefore, the presence of CQDs from sawdust noticeably enhanced the adsorption of cationic dyes onto polymeric membranes. The designed systems exploit the adsorption features ofmicrometric-sized fibrous mats to remove organic pollutants from industrial textile wastewater effectively. It is worth mentioning that composite adsorbent systems can be efficiently applied to real industrial cases because of the possibility of reusing them and opening the route to the fabrication of novel and highly performant adsorbents.

The emerging technology of power-by-light enables power and data delivery over a single free space optical (FSO) link for electrically isolated, interference-free remote operation. Telecom wavelength bands (lambda approximate to 1550 nm) are well known for applications in data communication over optical fiber and overlap atmospheric transparency windows, extending the reach of FSO power and data systems through the air. This creates the opportunity to directionally deliver significant power (above 1mW) and high speed data wirelessly over long distances. FSO channels can experience turbulence and weather conditions that affect data and power transmission. Hence they should be modeled and verified against measurements under varied atmospheric conditions. This will help improve model precision and robustness in predicting FSO channel performance. Accurate modeling of data transmission in FSO channels is urgently required to support the design of wireless optical communication systems for remote areas to which fiber deployment is difficult or uneconomic and instead long range data communications between ground stations and high-altitude platform systems (HAPS) may be employed. We have modelled an FSO channel transmitting data and power at 1550 and 1520 nm respectively under various meteorological conditions. The system model was developed in the commercially available OptiSystem software for modeling signals transmission. Different weather conditions translate directly to different FSO channel signal attenuations, impacting both data and power transmission. We also explore the impact of different modulation schemes such as Quadratic Amplitude Modulation (QAM), Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), and Quadratic Phase Shift Keying(QPSK) on the bit error rate of the transmitted data thereby achieving the optimal required hardware design parameters. This work provides a novel computer vision technique for high-resolution biospherical imaging based on cutting-edge machine learning and optical coherence technology. Our approach improves the accuracy and ease of identification of living cells when compared to previous methods. We conducted extensive ablation research on the framework's components. This demonstrated how different deep learning layers pick up distinct information and how optical coherence facilitates image comprehension. systems that operate continuously and in real time, using minimal computational resources, can use the proposed approach. The study discovered that the structure is robust and useful for researching biological tissues. Furthermore, a hyperparameter sensitivity study indicated that the model required fine-tuning to function more effectively. This novel design expands the scope of biological tissue analysis and establishes the foundation for future advancement by offering a comprehensive and adaptable solution for high-resolution biospeckle imaging. © 2024 IEEE.

Following the proposal of 400G fiber-optical communication standard, the next-generation systems with throughput up to 800 Gbps have gained wide interest. This work presents a decoder implementation of the open forward error correction (oFEC) adopted by the Open ROADM standard for high-speed fiber-optical communications. To meet the demand for high speed, a fully pipelined decoding architecture is designed. However, the special coding scheme of oFEC poses great challenges to the memory design, in which potential structural and data hazards can cause pipeline stalls and hence decrease the throughput. In this paper, an optimized storage strategy and several methods are proposed to completely solve those hazards. Equipped with these methods, a hazard-free pipelined decoder for the oFEC is developed and implemented under 28-nm technology. Synthesis results demonstrate that the proposed decoder can achieve a throughput of 902 Gbps, making it suitable for 800G fiber-optical communication systems. © 2024 IEEE.

In the pursuit of reducing the environmental impact of construction, minimizing land consumption, and promoting sustainable building systems, the use of adobe bricks reinforced with hemp offers a promising revival of traditional, eco-friendly building methods. This research specifically investigates the physical and mechanical characteristics of bricks made from a blend of adobe and hemp, aiming to enhance structural performance while maintaining sustainability. The study involved producing adobe bricks that were naturally sun-dried and prepared solely with water, without any added chemicals or stabilizing agents. Reinforcement was incorporated through hemp fibres or hurds, introduced in varying percentages and lengths to examine their effects on brick performance. The initial research phase focused on determining the optimal water content needed to achieve a uniform, semi-solid or plastic mixture. This entailed accounting for both the clay's properties and the hemp's water absorption capacity. Once the ideal mix design was established, brick specimens were formed, and their shrinkage during drying was measured to evaluate stability. The mechanical properties of the bricks were assessed through three-point bending and compression tests. The findings indicate that hemp reinforcement, in specific configurations, effectively limits shrinkage and enhances the compressive strength of the adobe bricks, demonstrating a viable option for sustainable construction materials. These results suggest that adobe bricks with hemp reinforcement could serve as an eco-sustainable material, combining traditional techniques with modern requirements for strength and durability.

In this work, we provide three novel magnitude comparators that operate on a minimal amount of power. A comparator is a mechanism that may be used to make decisions, and it has the potential to be implemented in a variety of control modules. In comparison to those of the currently available two-bit comparator designs, those currently being proposed for use with two-bit comparators dissipate less power, offer less propagation delay and spend less energy overall. Out of all the offered designs of comparator, the proposed design ii is the one that uses the least amount of power and energy, whilst the proposed design iiI offers the least amount of delay and requires the least amount of space. With the assistance of the Synopsys HSPICE tool, a statistical comparison between the proposed circuits and the existing ones is carried out in terms of power losses, latency, transistor count and power delay product. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
