Reflective learning is one of the key stages in experiential learning, providing essential for effective knowledge acquisition. In recent years, the recognition of games as facilitators of experiential learning has grown, highlighting their innate suitability for reflective learning. The Reflective Game design (RGD) framework is a new tool for incorporating reflective learning into game-based leading approaches, amplifying the reflective and experiential learning process. This study discusses the practical application of the RGD framework, guided by the principles of "design Thinking", to create a user-centric development process. This paper presents a case study on developing a serious digital game targeting "self-awareness among young adults". By applying the RGD framework guided by design thinking, the study adopts an iterative design process, user empathy, and reflective practices to offer insights into integrating these frameworks effectively. The positive findings from user surveys indicate a strong connection between players and the game, suggesting its potential for future educational use. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on interactive and educational game design, providing valuable perspectives for researchers, developers, and educators.

Data integration and information enrichment pose significant challenges to the advancement of Performance-based Generative design (PGD). One potential solution to these challenges is the utilization of Knowledge Graph (KG). However, the implementation of KG in PGD, particularly in leveraging expert knowledge to accelerate the process, remains an area that has not been thoroughly explored. In this research, we propose a PGD-KG schema to capture and represent the topological relationships and functionalities within PGD. We also introduce a method for automatically generating PGD-KG models from parametric design models enriched with semantic information. Additionally, we develop reasoning algorithms based on expert knowledge of sustainable design to facilitate automated performance evaluation. The effectiveness of the PGD-KG approach was demonstrated through its implementation in a design project, where the reasoning algorithms proved capable of significantly reducing the solution space in PGD by 88.50%, while still ensuring the inclusion of an adequate number of Pareto optimal solutions. This research contributes to the design acceleration by integration of expert knowledge, particularly sustainable design strategies, into PGD.

This study explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) in design processes, focusing on the ideation phase. Utilizing in-depth interviews with experienced designers and an experimental approach with novices, it compares AIGC tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney and Copilot with traditional sketching methods. The findings reveal two distinct operational patterns in AIGC utilization: a subtractive method of refining AI outputs and an additive method of evolving design through AI suggestions. Experienced designers view AIGC as a powerful aid for creative ideation, while novices prefer familiar hand-drawing methods. The study proposes a "Seeing-Instructing-Seeing" model, adapting Schon's reflective practice model, to incorporate the collaborative dynamic between designers and AI, marking a shift from manual to intellectual labor in design ideation. This represents a paradigm shift in design methodologies, suggesting a future of co-creative partnerships between designers and AI tools.

This study aims to assess and rank the effectiveness of 3D reconstruction, parametric design, and generative design in creating cost-effective, timely, and clinically appropriate bone plates for proximal tibia fractures. Additive manufacturing (AM) now enables customized bone plates, enhancing treatment efficacy and reducing long-term complications. However, challenges such as prolonged design processes, compatibility issues, and high costs persist, making it crucial to compare design approaches to identify the most effective method for patient-specific bone plates. To accomplish the evaluation, Analytic Hierarchy process (AHP) adopted with eleven design criteria, i.e., the adaptability, load capacity, manufacturability, design cost and speed, installation ease, durability, anatomical conformance, patient comfort, customization, and lightweight design was utilized to access these three design approaches. Specifically, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to support the load capacity criteria comparison by providing stress distribution for each design. The FEA results revealed that the 3D reconstructed plate exhibited the lowest stress at 256.7 MPa, while the generative and parametric designs registered higher stresses of 755.3 MPa and 363.4 MPa, respectively. The parametric design was identified as the optimal method with a score of 0.444, compared to 0.359 for 3D reconstruction and 0.197 for generative design. This ensures that patient care is optimized through the use of custom-tailored implants that are both effective and efficient.

The study aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding of AI integration in UI/UX design process from the perspective of professionals directly engaged with these tools. Two surveys were conducted in August 2023, to explore attitudes, ethical concerns, and future views on AI-assisted design technologies through both closed and open-ended questions. Using both thematic and descriptive analyses, the results showed that designers were cautiously optimistic about AI tools. This shows how important it is to think about ethics, understand how AI works, and find a good balance between integrating AI into the design workflow. These insights are crucial for AI tool developers, design educators, and the design community to develop more effective, ethical, and user-centric AI tools.

Enhancing robotic system efficiency through lean principles is essential in the dynamic landscape of industrial automation. This study introduces a comprehensive framework combining the "Visionary Pathway design Tool" (VPDT), simulation-based analysis, and TRIZ methodologies to optimize lean concept integration in robotic systems across various production scenarios. The research addresses the complexities of designing intelligent industrial robotic systems under lean management, focusing on enhancing production process resilience and efficiency The approach integrates VPDT's AI-driven problem definition and Ideal Final Result (IFR) visioning capabilities with simulation models developed in tools like RoboDK. It leverages predictive modeling and scenario planning to envision ideal operational states and uses backcasting to map strategic pathways to achieve these goals. TRIZ principles are applied to resolve inherent contradictions in system design, ensuring innovative solutions aligned with lean management objectives. The simulation phase, using real-world industrial scenarios, and reinforcement learning assesses the impact of lean strategies on production process resilience.

This paper investigates the application of Generative AI (GenAI) in the design processes of Thai Lue textiles, aiming to enhance creativity, sustainability, and cultural preservation. The study employs a three-phase methodology: Engagement and Ideation, AI integration and design Generation, and Human-AI Collaboration. In the first phase, community workshops with local students, designers, and artisans focused on capturing cultural values through hand-drawn designs inspired by community stories and personal reflections, emphasizing the 'Hand' and 'Heart' aspects to foster deep cultural connections and personal engagement. The second phase utilized AI tools like DALL-E to generate diverse design prototypes from detailed prompts, evaluating these AI-generated designs for cultural relevance and aesthetic appeal through qualitative interviews and observations. This phase demonstrated the "AI-Harmony"concept, illustrating AI's role in complementing human creativity and expanding design possibilities. The final phase featured collaborative workshops where artisans and designers refined the AI-generated designs, gathering feedback on AI tools' usability and creative impact. Card sorting techniques and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) studies were used to refine and validate design components, highlighting the effective synergy between human creativity and AI. This phase accelerated the design process and ensured that the outputs were both innovative and culturally resonant. The study's findings reveal the potential of GenAI to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern design elements, enhancing creative efficiency and making traditional crafts more appealing to younger generations. The collaborative design process is intrinsically complicated and dynamic, and researchers have long been exploring how to enhance efficiency in this process. As Artificial Intelligence technology evolves, it has been widely used as a design tool and exhibited the potential as a design collaborator. Nevertheless, problems concerning how designers should communicate with AI in collaborative design remain unsolved. To address this research gap, we referred to how designers communicate fluently in human-human design collaboration, and found awareness to be an important ability for facilitating communication by understanding their collaborators and current situation. However, previous research mainly studied and supported human awareness, the possible impact AI awareness would bring to the human-AI collaborative design process, and the way to realize AI awareness remain unknown. In this study, we explored how AI awareness will impact human-AI collaboration through a Wizard-of-Oz experiment. Both quantitative and qualitative results supported that enabling AI to have awareness can enhance the communication fluidity between human and AI, thus enhancing collaboration efficiency. This paper addresses the gap between theoretical advances in design Science Research (DSR) and their practical implementation. Despite DSR's potential for transformative impact, the challenge of translating research artifacts into tangible, real-world applications remains. We explore interdisciplinary concepts to identify actionable pathways that enhance the practical applicability and real-world engagement of DSR. Our analysis reveals four key pathways: integrating stakeholder engagement throughout the DSR process, adopting a holistic problem-solving perspective, improving artifact design with user insights, and maximizing practical impact through strategic communication. These pathways are developed through a comprehensive literature review and insights from concepts such as human-centered design, systems thinking, and engaged scholarship. Our contribution is twofold: we answer the call for greater practical applicability in DSR by outlining strategies for operationalizing interdisciplinary insights, and we propose an initial framework for a more engaged DSR practice. © 2024 30th Americas conference on Information Systems, AMCIS 2024.
