In the evolving educational technology landscape, integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technologies transforms traditional teaching and learning approaches into more active, collaborative, and self-directed processes. This study introduces an advanced teaching solution to enhance engineering education, particularly in air conditioning and refrigeration: the IoT-embedded Simulation of Teaching Aids for Air Handling Unit (AHU) Operation. Utilising the comprehensive ADDIE instructional design model, this project progressed through five phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The IoT integration facilitates real-time data monitoring and interactive learning experiences, offering a hands-on approach to understanding complex engineering concepts. Three domain experts rigorously evaluated the effectiveness of this teaching aid through a series of assessments focusing on design, development, and functionality. Feedback from these evaluations confirmed the teaching aid's success in engaging students and enhancing their learning process. Recognised for its quality materials, safety, and organised components, along with its innovative use of IoT technology, this product successfully fulfils the objectives of this study. It represents a significant step forward in modernising engineering education.

This research delves into the design and development of User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) for a mobile virtual reality (VR) application aimed at simulating earthquake mitigation strategies. Earthquakes pose significant threats to communities worldwide, necessitating innovative approaches for preparedness and mitigation. Leveraging the immersive capabilities of VR technology, this study focuses on creating a realistic simulation environment that enables users to experience and learn about effective mitigation techniques. through an iterative design process, incorporating principles of UI/UX design, human-computer interaction, and disaster management, the research aims to enhance user engagement, comprehension, and retention of earthquake mitigation practices. The study also explores the integration of interactive elements, feedback mechanisms, and educational content within the VR environment to promote effective learning and decision-making during simulated earthquake scenarios. This study shows System Usability Scale (SUS) score is 72.475, this result make the design of this simulation can use in average user. © 2024 IEEE.

With the slowing of Moore's Law, chiplet technology emerges as a cost-effective and scalable solution to the challenges of advancing semiconductor manufacturing. It allows for the integration of heterogeneous chiplets, each designed under optimal process technology nodes, to meet specific application requirements. 2.5D silicon interposer packaging platform has been widely used in heterogeneous chiplet integrated packaging to support high-end performance product requirements. In this study, we focused on2.5D package to evaluate structural and material solution at initial design stage. In this work, numerical FE models of molded 2.5D package was built-up. Simulations of different design of combo die layout configuration and interposer thickness were performed to assess warpage and ILD stress. The simulations demonstrated that the four smaller ASIC dies were combined into a single die or reduces interposer thickness could reduce the package warpage. However, they would exist combo die warpage and ILD stress risk. Key effects of different material properties are also performed through simulation analysis. The simulation results show that adjusting the mechanical properties of EMC and WUF could effectively reduce ILD stress and early-stage combo die warpage, positively impacting the reliability of the package. However, it has limited influence on the final package warpage. Future improvements could combine material adjustments with structural changes for a more comprehensive approach to minimizing both warpage and stress. through optimization analysis, subsequently, a design guideline will be established based on the simulation results to facilitate future designs for molded 2.5D package chiplet integration. © 2024 IEEE.

In this article, we explore the integration of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing in testing a novel optical device design. We dive into the thought process behind our approach and discuss the challenges we encountered, including the relatively low precision of FDM printing for such applications, potential deformation of Poly lactic Acid (PLA) material due to heat exposure, and interference from the fluorescence of PLA. Our primary focus was on addressing the low precision, which posed significant difficulties in designing and building our testing setup. through innovative design strategies, we successfully overcame this obstacle and created a test setup using FDM 3D printing. Our findings demonstrate that FDM printing can be effectively utilized in fields traditionally deemed incompatible due to precision requirements. Moreover, our tests confirmed that heat and fluorescence do not compromise the integrity of the optical setup, suggesting that FDM printing is a viable and cost-effective solution for building optical testing setups. This work highlights the versatility of FDM 3D printing across a broad range of applications and underscores the value of smart design in overcoming its limitations and shortcomings.

This paper explores the use of probabilistic design for mining activities and how to integrate probabilistic design into decision making in mining engineering. Mining design differs from civil rock engineering design with respect to exhibiting more demanding, and continuously changing, stress conditions, different excavation/extraction methods, and a larger scale of the operations. Relevant examples on the use of probabilistic-based design methods in civil and mining engineering are presented together with commonalities and case-specific characteristics. The acceptance level for the probability of failure is a part of the risk-based design process and needs to be selected together with decision-makers from other disciplines in the mine. Based on experience from, and commonalities with, civil engineering, the integration of probabilistic design in underground mining should focus on the uncertainty of material properties (e.g., effect of spatial variability, parameter distribution, etc.) and on how to implement theoretical findings into engineering practice. The probabilistic design assessment methods should be further evaluated by applying them to real mining cases.

Wearable technologies hold promise for revolutionizing disease management in the cattle farming industry by enabling real-time monitoring of cattle health through continuous physiological and behavioral data collection. However, the practical implementation of these technologies, along with approaches to have a paramount consideration of animal welfare and farmer needs during the process, remain underexplored. This study adopts animal-computer interaction (ACI) principles to address these gaps, with a focus on harmonizing technological advancements with on-ground realities. The paper details the design process of a leg-worn sensor-based system for cattle health monitoring, covering hardware and software facets from ideation to implementation. The contributions of this study extend to both the ACI field and the broader livestock industry. By embracing ACI principles, we showcase the potential of wearable sensor technology to transform cattle health monitoring. The developed leg-worn system exemplifies the integration of ACI-driven design with practical farm management needs, offering a model for the advancement of livestock health and management practices.

Standard joining techniques such as adhesive, sealer, and mastic dispensing play a vital role in automotive Body in White manufacturing processes. Traditionally, validation involves verifying dispensed bead placement and presence, relying on human inspectors who utilize camera and closed circuit TV (CCTV) systems for quality confirmation. Equipment validation involves assessing camera quantity and placement, typically determined post-installation through the "camera field of view" placement method. Unfortunately, this approach has led to purchasing excessive or sometimes unnecessary equipment, contributing to elevated launch costs. This publication introduces a Digital Twin approach for predicting the quantity and field of view of passive vision cameras used in dispensed bead applications. The method employs simulation to validate the process before actual integration. Additionally, the placement of beads undergoes validation through Virtual Reality simulation, enhancing training for quality inspectors and thereby increasing the number of inspections achievable per shift. The use of Digital Twin and Virtual Reality modeling also results in improved development time for quality inspection documentation, a task typically handled by Quality Engineers. The proposed procedure has demonstrated noticeable reductions in costs, inspection documentation development time, and an enhancement in quality validation procedures. Ongoing research aims to explore the impact of increased inspection frequency within manufacturing facilities, with a specific focus on the implications for reprocessing time. © 2024 by ASME.

This research evaluates the effectiveness of the SBCE application, specifically targeting the design and optimization of the front reinforcement bumper of a car. SBCE is an enabler of lean product development process. The front reinforcement bumper is a critical component in automotive safety and performance, and its optimization requires evaluating numerous design alternatives to ensure the best possible solution. The primary goal of this integrated strategy is to enhance the efficiency of product creation, improve product performance, eliminate unnecessary waste, and reduce costs. SBCE, a collaborative methodology, facilitates this by systematically assessing multiple designs before selecting the most optimal solution. Conventional product development methodologies often lead to extended and costly iterations of modifications and inadequate final products. In contrast, SBCE promotes the development of diverse design alternatives systematically. However, manual decision-making and communication present considerable obstacles due to inherent biases and dependence on human implicit knowledge. By utilizing data analysis and pattern discovery, decision-making can be enhanced through integrating SBCE with machine learning (ML) that significantly improves the analysis of complex designs where optimal design solution generated automatically, particularly for the front reinforcement bumper of a car. This methodology results in enhanced design optimization based on customer requirement by reduce 22% part weight with increasing 56% for safety factor of the front reinforcement bumper. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The development of automotive systems has become more complex due to the growing demand for sophisticated features, the necessity for smooth integration of technology, and faster production schedules, leading to numerous challenges in their development. To tackle some of these challenges, this paper introduces a practical method designed to simplify the early design and assessment stages of complex automotive systems through the use of sophisticated systems engineering methodologies. It details the combination of Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and IBM Rational Rhapsody's Parametric Constraint Evaluator (PCE) within an improved Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) framework aimed at the development of complex systems. This fusion enables the virtual evaluation of parametric constraints and the analysis of engineering performance for different system configurations, thus enhancing the process of engineering analysis. We demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of this approach using a generic automotive powertrain case study. This involves modeling a system based on specific requirements and evaluating its performance across predetermined configurations. Furthermore, the versatility of the MBSE framework is highlighted, showing its applicability beyond the automotive industry to encompass a wide range of engineering domains. This study aims to pave the way for more efficient and manageable development processes in the face of growing system complexity.

This paper presents the conceptual design of a tension leg platform (TLP) for the ARCUS "towerless" vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). VAWTs are ideal for floating offshore sites and have several advantages over horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) including reduced top mass, lower center of gravity, increased energy capture, and in turn lower cost. The towerless ARCUS VAWT drives these advantages further through increased structural efficiency and by enabling more optimized TLP designs with simplified installation procedures. For hull sizing, we have studied three turbine sizes with corresponding power ratings of 5.1 MW, 10.4 MW and 22.3 MW. The largest turbine was identified as having the greatest potential to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and is the reference size used for the further detailed design process. The conceptual design of the VAWT TLP has been awarded with an ABS Approval in Principle Certificate.
