The coal cutter is one of the key equipment for comprehensive mechanized coal mining in modern mines. In the production and use stage, the main factors that directly affect the safe operation of the coal cutter and the economic benefits of coal mines are gear strength and life span. Gear failure will lead to shearer equipment failure and production accidents, so it is of great significance to study the wear state of shearer transmission teeth for the normal work and daily maintenance of shearer. In this paper, the wear state of shearer drive teeth is studied, and a real-time monitoring system of shearer with certain integration and reliability is developed under the background of complex environment of coal mine. through monitoring the physical and chemical properties of oil and wear particles, the change law and influencing factors of viscosity and wear debris morphology in the process of oil use are studied. The wear state of the transmission gear of the shearer is analyzed and studied, which provides a guarantee for the safe production of modern mines. © 2024 SPIE.

This paper investigates how the integration of fundamental principles of mechanical engineering within students' learning in the context of drawing, manufacturing process, and fabrication methods influences the understanding and practical application of design thinking principles among first-year students. The program interlinks theoretical education with work in laboratories on issues dealing with orthographic and isometric projections, metal forming, casting, machining, and welding. The students' improvement is evaluated by Pre-Intervention, Mid-Intervention, and Post-Intervention Surveys. These surveys also monitored shifts in student knowledge, technical skills, and design thinking. The results have indicated a significant gain over the course of the intervention in the student's ability to navigate the idea-to-product continuum, in the students' skill with AutoCAD, and in the competencies associated with manufacturing and fabrication processes. Such research exemplifies how a structured curriculum effectively incorporates theoretical teaching with hands-on experience for improved engineering education to equip students better for the challenges faced in the industry. © 2024 IEEE.

Abstract : This paper addresses the underutilization of Business Intelligence (BI) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for data-driven decision-making. Despite the abundance of data across various university domains, its integration into decision-making processes is not yet widespread. The study reviews the application of BI and data warehouses in HEIs, considering case studies from institutions, which have implemented BI tools for diverse administrative and academic functions. The research aims to uncover novel gaps in the literature on BI in HEIs, facilitating future scholarly pursuits. Employing the Systematic Literature Mapping (SLM) method. The study offers a visual and systematic approach to identifying these gaps. The anticipated outcome is to enhance the strategic use of BI in HEIs, thereby improving decision-making and management practices within the higher education sector. The research results indicate numerous research opportunities available. Among them, from a process perspective, proposing Self-Service BI for the development of artifacts using Action Research can yield business benefits through interaction with dashboard systems. In the results section there is a new opportunity identified, namely the application of Action design Research to develop BI design principles. © 2024 ACM.

Australia's current design practices for apartment buildings show a notable absence of direct engagement with end-users. This study delves into the potential of digital platforms to bridge this gap, enhancing the dialogue between developers and future residents. through eleven semi-structured interviews with industry professionals, including designers and developers, insights were gathered on the prospective integration of digital tools for end-user engagement into the design process. The investigation revealed potential challenges that might arise with adopting digital platforms: aligning user expectations with project economics, overcoming a lack of developer awareness about the significance of digital platforms in the design process, and navigating the constraints of a relatively small market. Additionally, the traditional linear engagement process does not well align with the iterative, user-responsive nature of digital engagement platforms. Highlighting the importance of digital tools in creating meaningful interactions with future residents, the research suggests that while introducing these platforms may add complexity, it is essential for fostering user-centric, community-driven environments. In contrast to proactive implementations in countries like the USA, Australia's current lack of such digital engagement tools marks a significant gap. Despite expected challenges, digital platforms are recommended to ensure apartment designs better reflect end-user needs and preferences. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This project explores the integration of mass customization and 3D printing in eyewear design to develop an aesthetically fitting system that harmonizes eyeglass frames with individual facial features. Utilizing human-computer interaction, the system leverages user facial data for personalized frame selection and adjustments, addressing significant knowledge gaps in the current market. It designs a co-creation service to enhance user engagement throughout the customization process, emphasizing the importance of user feedback in driving design decisions. Key lessons learned include the critical role of aesthetical experience in user choice, the need for intuitive navigation to mitigate choice overload, and the value of iterative design through user interaction. The project highlights the potential of combining traditional eyewear design with modern technology to create personalized, functional, and aesthetically pleasing products. This paper aims to discuss the integration and optimization strategy of intelligent algorithms in digital twin power plant control system, with special attention to the application of transfer learning algorithm in improving system performance. Firstly, the paper introduces the basic framework of the digital twin power station control system, which realizes the real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance of power station equipment by simulating the running state of real power station. Then, it elaborates how transfer learning algorithm can be applied to this system to accelerate the learning and adaptation process under new environment by using existing data and models, so as to improve the response speed and accuracy of the system. In addition, the paper also discusses the design and implementation of digital twin substation framework, and emphasizes the importance of system simulation in verifying and optimizing control strategies. through comparative experiments, it is proved that the digital twin power plant control system with integrated transfer learning algorithm has obvious advantages in energy efficiency management, fault diagnosis and operation optimization. © 2024 IEEE.

Blended learning has emerged as a significant trend in global higher education due to its flexible and personalized characteristics. From the literature, it can be observed that almost every case of blended teaching practice presents a blended teaching design model. This indicates a lack of a universal framework for blended learning. Additionally, the emergence of the Knowledge Graph has introduced new challenges to traditional blended learning scenarios. Faced with these challenges, this study aims to utilize knowledge graphs to develop a generic framework for blended learning through a literature research approach. A review of the literature revealed that knowledge graphs in the field of education are micro-classes with learning resources. Based on this, a general process for constructing knowledge graphs was proposed with the use of MOOC platform. The constructed knowledge graph serves as the foundation for the Knowledge Graph Blended Learning framework. The online component implements an adaptive learning cycle based on the knowledge graph, while the offline component facilitates students’ deep learning. In future related research, the Knowledge Graph Blended Learning framework can be used to guide the practice of blended learning and further expand and deepen it in terms of personalized and accurate teaching decision-making and whole-process enhancement of process evaluation. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

As design practitioners begin to consider methods for sustainably disposing of what is made, we explore potential directions for designing with the multispecies-driven degradation of 3D printed biomaterial objects. We present three past encounters with multispecies agents—plants, insects, fungi—that degraded biomaterial samples in our lab. Based on these encounters, we speculate on near-future engagements that such organisms might have with our printed biomaterial objects, where an object is transformed through degradation over time. In these scenarios, we pose multispecies agents as co-designers and co-fabricators of objects, exemplifying how we might reconfigure entangled relationships between human and more-than-human agents in the making-with process and how we might leverage our situated position as human makers to enable planetary flourishing. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The tolerance-cost optimization plays a central role in the design of industrial components, due to its implications in all production stages. To reduce development times and increase product quality, the systematic application of tolerance-cost optimization from the early design phases requires a deep knowledge of the tolerance effects on both product performance and production cost. However, many factors still hamper its industrial diffusion, comprising three improvement areas: data and parameters sharing, flexibility to application complexity, and integration of simulation tools. Data and parameters sharing are a key factor since directly affect the representation and information transfer of tolerances and manufacturing processes. Both tolerances-cost relations and optimization structure must be properly represented, through a knowledge modelling framework. The present paper introduces an interoperability framework for the Computer-Aided tolerance-cost optimization. through creating instances for tolerance and manufacturing process information, the interoperability is implemented defining a systematic sequence of steps to breakdown the multi-disciplinary optimization structure. Starting from the assembly structure, with the extraction of information from the 3D models to its transfer for parametric modelling into tolerance simulation and cost estimation environments, the interoperability framework identifies input-output relations and highlights the integration provided by multi-disciplinary optimization structure. The application of the presented framework on an archetypal case study provides an analysis of the suitability of the method, highlighting the further improvements. In this way it is possible to improve the interoperability between design and simulation virtual environments, to optimize tolerances in a concurrent a multi-disciplinary manner. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
