A prototype system has been developed to aid collaborating spacecraft and mission design teams in the display and analysis of complex high-tech space systems. We explored the implementation of a virtual design environment in which engineers and scientists can create and modify their designs in real time, seeing effects of their modifications immediately. The goal has been to achieve a seamless well integrated process performed in a distributed immersive environment linking geographically dispersed teams, facilities and resources together;and then to compare this new process with traditional designprocesses. Making the new seamless process is realized through the integration and deployment of new technologies such as: distributed high-capacity computing, communications, and networking;immersive systems;product data management systems;CAD/CAM/CAE systems with object-oriented user interfaces and databases;knowledge-based engineering and design optimization agents. The architecture and current status of this environment is described, and its implementation at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory System and Mission design Center. Discussions are also given on the advantages and some disadvantages learned from experiences applying this new process to several space mission designs.

One of the major barriers to commercial application of optical technology to information processing is the high cost of system development and manufacture. This problem has been solved in other industries through the use of computer aided design (CAD) and integration of system design with manufacturing. The development of better system level metrology is needed to allow more computer-based methods to be used in this process. As a test case, we are designing an optical pattern recognition system to be performed on an input image (at video rates) versus a large reference set, for example 1000 faces, with images of 640 by 480 pixels or larger. We have constructed both an optical pattern recognition system and a holographic memory system which are have instrumented and used to address the metrological needs of these applications. This has allowed us to evaluate the level of system and component level metrology needed for real-time video processing. This report addressed the metrological issues encountered in building and testing these systems.

This paper describes an on going research by the authors who are seeking methods to integrate an earlier developed manufacturing process modeling method in the virtual manufacturing (VM) technology. The primary aim is to attach special manufacturability evaluation to modeling of mechanical products. A more or less generic process model is generated for a cluster of manufacturing tasks then manufacturing process entities are created by evaluation of the manufacturing process model using part, form feature, production environment, production planning and cost information. Petri net manufacturing process model representation is used. It has proved to be a versatile virtual manufacturing tool in manufacturing process planning, evaluation of manufacturability and in manufacturing environment design. A process model evaluation procedure is emphasized in the course of which feasibility and resource requirements of the manufacturing are revealed. Firstly, techniques of evaluation of manufacturability, the applied approach to integration of shape and manufacturing process modeling and the related virtual manufacturing concepts are introduced. The process model is outlined and earlier relevant publications of the authors are cited. Then problems and solutions at evaluating of process model in close connection with design and environmental changes are detailed. Following this, integration of the method into a comprehensive virtual manufacturing concept is explained. Finally, main issues and future research plans are concluded.

Due to growing, worldwide competition, manufacturing companies have to employ new technologies to cut costs, improve product quality and, more importantly, shorten the design-to-manufacturing and -assembly cycle for new products. During the last years, Virtual Reality (VR) has proofed its potential for the visualization and interactive manipulation of complex data. Companies in the automotive and aerospace industry have intensified their Virtual Reality research activities, obvious through growing budgets for the development of suitable hard- and software. However, most of their findings are kept secret as a competitive advantage. As a result, the offspring for smaller companies not involved in such research programs is minimal. This paper describes a process for integrating an interactive Virtual Reality-based assembly simulation of a digital mockup into an existing CAD/CAM infrastructure. The necessary hard- and software preconditions for the process are explained so that it can easily be adopted by non VR-specialists. The article outlines how assembly simulation can improve the CAD/CAM procedures and structures, which CAD model preparations have to be carried out and which virtual environment requirements have to be fulfilled. The process is validated through an assembly example from a current XMM (X-ray Multi Mirror) satellite integration project performed by Dornier Satellitensysteme GmbH, Finally, deficits of existing Virtual Reality simulation software are discussed and possible solutions and necessary developments are presented.
