Summary form only given. SOI based devices bring the potential of very low voltage operation at high speed as required in portable electronic systems. However, to realize the advantages of SOI MOSFETs in a commercial product (1) high-performance transistors, with (2) reproducible and good controllability need to be realized. Furthermore, (3) reliability against the environment (e.g. ESD) must be demonstrated. In this work, a high performance 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS process implemented on ultra-thin (shallow) SIMOX wafers is presented. This process is aimed at low-power, low-voltage (Vdd=l to 1.8 V) and high speed application for portable communication devices. The main considerations in the process/device design and integration are discussed and manufacturability demonstrated.

Artificial intelligent (AI) research has been focused on understanding cooperative knowledge systems. The questions centre around the complexity of separate knowledge sources in terms of heterarchical and hierarchical organization structure and convergence of the design cycle. We discuss an approach that employs a set of cooperative knowledge sources involved in the designprocess at various stages of VLSI design, interacting through a common blackboard architecture. A conceptual model based on blackboard architecture is introduced to manage knowledge associated with VLSI design.

A fast multiplier based on the logarithmic number system is implemented in a VLSI chip. Multiplication in the decimal number system is equivalent to an addition in the logarithmic number system, thus, the use of logarithms reduce the operation of multiplication to simple addition. Multiplication of two binary numbers can be achieved by adding the binary logarithms of the two numbers and then deriving the antilog of the result. The approximate logarithm of a binary number can be found from the number itself through a process of shifts and counting. This is a simpler designprocess as compared to storing the logarithms on an on-chip ROM which results in complex hardware as the word length increases. The logarithmic approximation results in some error in the product. This is reduced using an error reduction technique. The presence of error limits the application of this multiplier to applications in signal processing where it is not critical. The design is implemented using a 2.0 micron double metal process.

In this paper, the intersection of software engineering (SE) and human-computer interaction (HCI) education is explored through an examination of some current textbooks, papers and curriculum proposals. It is argued that HCI is not well integrated with SE lifecycle models; that interface design is often perceived as a small part of overall system design; and that in current computer science curricula, HCI is often viewed as an 'add on'. There is a need for a more integrated approach, and for HCI issues to become SE issues. Recommendations for a cross-disciplinary approach to the teaching of these subjects in undergraduate courses in computer science are presented.

As software projects evolve, possibly differing in size, complexity, scope and purpose, the development processes that support the project must evolve to reflect these changes. For a distributed project, maintaining proper communications, coordinating between project stakeholders, and maintaining managerial control become increasingly important and, unfortunately, increasingly difficult. The Endeavors system is an open, distributed process modeling and execution infrastructure that addresses communication, coordination, and control issues. Complex processes may require: (a) distribution of people and processes; event based and intermediate format integration of external tools; a low entry barrier through ease of use and incremental adoption; ability to customize and reuse objects, tools, and policies; and dynamic change of runtime processes, objects, and behaviors. Endeavors' solution architecture achieves these goals through application of five key design strategies: (1) maintaining multiple object model layers; (2) implementing the architecture as a set of highly componentized, lightweight, transportable, concurrent elements; (3) providing customization capabilities for each layer of the object model; (4) using a reflexive object model to support dynamic change; and (5) allowing dynamic loading and changing of objects including loading of executable handlers, new object types, and extensions. We discuss these goals and design strategies, describe the architecture, and describe the current status of the project and its relevance to its own development.

This paper deals with circuit design aspects of making the a.c. amplifier based on the potentials and specific features of the process of anodic oxidation of aluminium to form dielectric substrates of cathode-heating assemblies (CHA) and anode-grid assemblies (AGA). design and technological methods are described that are used to make active (five vacuum microtriodes) and passive (resistors, capacitors, commutation) elements. As compared to earlier devices, the a.c. amplifier vacuum integrated microcircuits (VIMC) are more economical and have better characteristics in terms of miniaturization and integration. Its fundamental peculiarities are the use of two-sided through-anodizing to form dielectric substrates with microrelief and superfine-structure grids of microtriodes. Some characteristics of the a.c. amplifier VIMC are given and ways of improving them are discussed.

Resolution of large problems in an organizational context often requires decomposition of the problem into subproblems which will allow individual agents to work on the subproblem of their expertise and resolve the overall problem through coordination with each other. Examples of such problems include engineering and software design, project planning, product design and marketing, and auditing decisions. We address the issue of designing information sharing and cooperation mechanisms to support intelligent agents in the overall problem resolution process using distributed AI techniques. The central mechanism that renders the subproblems to be relatively independent is the truth maintenance system at the individual agent (intra-agent) level which allows a consistent integration of observations, assumptions, and rules to arrive at propositions regarding a subproblem and allows the member to maintain a non-conflicting set of beliefs. We propose a discourse protocol which allows agents to communicate in a structured fashion and an inter-agent truth maintenance system which allows multiple agents to identify conflicting beliefs. A conflict resolution strategy allows agents to resolve both internal conflicts and most inter-agent conflicts. We illustrate the working of the model and discuss the design of a prototype system.

With the current emphasis on integrated diagnostics, the importance of testability analysis as an integral part of the development process for system hardware design, integrated built-in-test (BIT) software, and test program set (TPS) applications cannot be overlooked. The current escalation in test development tools for RF and analog TPS applications has further enhanced the role of testability analysis and runtime expert tools to aid the diagnostic process by providing figures of merit for fault coverage compliance. The utilization of these tools, however, has proven prohibitive doe to their rigidity in structured format difficulty in use, and cost considerations. A low cost and readily available solution to this impasse has been realized through adaptation of industry standard relational databases. This paper describes adaptation of the relational database to perform such analyses that are currently being implemented for new program prime system designs.

Based on the sorting networks, a new VLSI architecture suitable for 2-D rank order filtering is proposed. The major advantage of the proposed architecture is the fast response time and modular architecture. Generally speaking, the throughput of the proposed architecture is (N-1) times faster than using a 1-D rank order filter for 2D N/spl times/N data. The concept of block processing is also incorporated into the design to reduce the time-area complexity of the proposed architecture. Roughly speaking, the complexity is reduced to 2/3 and 1/2 compared with a rank order and median filter without using block processing architecture, respectively. A 3/spl times/3 median filter with block processing architecture is implemented through a 0.8 /spl mu/m single-poly double metal CMOS process. The simulation results are correct with a clock rate up to 91 MHz.
