Product design is often a process that involves multiple parties collaborating with each other to design a final product. The involvement of multiple parties induces several risks associated with cyber security and intellectual property theft. These risks are hard to address especially in the case of traditional centralized platforms which may be prone to misconfiguration and software vulnerabilities. As a potential solution, we aim at addressing the issue of design data exchange through decentralized platforms such as the blockchain. Our solution leverages data formats that can segment product data models and gives the ability to control access to data through a decentralized platform which can be fully integrated with PLM processes through APIs. A proof of concept of this solution using the open-source Odoo PLM platform as well as the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain development platform is demonstrated.

Topology Optimization is a widely used method to find optimal designs that meet constraints and maximize system performance. However, traditional iterative optimization methods such as SIMP are computationally expensive and prone to getting stuck in local minima, limiting their effectiveness for complex or large-scale problems. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel Generative Optimization method that integrates classic optimization (SIMP) as a refining mechanism for the topologies generated by a diffusion model. By introducing a computationally efficient approximation inspired by classic ODE solutions, the need for conditioning on physical fields is eliminated, reducing inference time by half. Our method facilitates the generation of feasible and high-performance topologies while explicitly guiding the process towards regions with superior manufacturability and performance without the need for external auxiliary models or additional labeled data. Notably, our approach overcomes drawbacks encountered by learning-based methods in out-of-distribution constraint configurations, including floating material and high compliance error, as well as the requirement for extensive pre-processing and surrogate models. Experimental results showcase a substantial 20% increase in performance. Overall, the integration of deep generative models, such as Diffusion models and Generative Adversarial Networks, to warm start optimization holds significant promise in advancing the design and optimization of structures in engineering applications, extending its applicability to a broader spectrum of performance-aware engineering design problems.

Due to a recent increase in conflicts, natural disasters, and economic crises, a growing wave of migrant populations has been searching for asylum in Europe. For this population of asylum seekers, the migration process, like currents and rapids, can be dangerous, uneven, and violent, and the integration into their host communities can add to the preexisting trauma. Extending on HCI increasing attention to the caring understanding of human life values, this paper presents initial research focused on refugees' storytelling activities to support their well-being. Here, we describe and discuss the results from a set of studies with the Portuguese Center for Refugees to design and refine a bespoke interactive digital storytelling authoring tool. This study aims to promote social cohesion and equal participation in European society by using Digital Storytelling to allow migrant communities to share and connect their stories and experiences. The authors contribute with a novel digital storytelling prototype tool and the discussion and reflections stemming from the user-centered design approach. The insights gained from this work are relevant for interaction designers and researchers seeking to support vulnerable populations through Interactive Digital Storytelling.

This study presents the contribution of location intelligence to property damage risk evaluation in the insurance industry through a decision support system prototype. We followed a standard design science research methodology for the design and development of the prototype and its evaluation by 11 industry experts. The results indicate that underwriters, the intended primary users of the prototype, had a positive perception of the prototype, while actuaries and managers expressed concerns about data and processintegration to existing practices. Overall, the prototype highlights the potential of geospatial data, emphasizes the need for standardized risk evaluation processes for underwriters, and underscores the competitive advantage gained through access to quality geospatial data. These findings contribute to the understanding of how location intelligence can enhance risk assessment in the insurance industry.

The ability to manipulate and grasp objects is largely affected by the tactile afferent provided by the skin in humans providing information that are used by the brain to guide motor actions. In the light of the recent advancements in neuroprosthetic, the quest for a hand prosthesis that integrate more sophisticated tactile sensor is increased. Electronic skin based on triboelectric phenomena holds significant promise in this respect, but the literature addressing its integration within a prosthetic hand is limited and scattered. Here we show a systematic and comprehensive pipeline for the design, development, and mechanical integration of a electronic skin. The paper addresses the identification of the technical requirements for the skin, the selection of material for the soft skin, and the definition of target contact area for optimizing the arrangement of 6 sensors within the size of a finger. After that, we discussed the design of the fingers for its integration and the manufacturing process. The proposed pipeline was validated through mechanical and electrical integrity tests. Compression tests applying 40 N demonstrate the e-skin's strength under realistic force conditions, and electrical tests show consistent sensors responses pre- and post-overload. Finally, we checked for activation of the sensors during the execution of three grasp types varying the size and the shape of the target object, to verify the arrangement of the sensors.

Advanced work packaging (AWP) is a project delivery framework that promotes early stakeholder integration and the need for planning, design, and procurement processes to align with an overall execution schedule. AWP presents similarities to other methods that promote integrated planning. However, AWP is distinct in its approach to providing a structured work process for both planning and execution. In fact, AWP increases the need for alignment of engineering, procurement, and construction through work packaging per phase, extending traditional practices. Literature has recognized that designers and engineers need to change their culture and process/workflow to implement AWP efficiently. However, what these specific changes are has yet to be explicitly evaluated. This study (1) explores the process-level changes in the early stages of the design phase that occur in industrial projects utilizing AWP and (2) investigates how these processes qualitatively compare with traditional delivery methods. To that end, the research team used input from 22 "industry experts" representing owners, contractors, and suppliers to understand design changes on AWP projects. After compiling a list of changes, three external experts identified four fundamental changes filtered down from the broader list. The changes include (i) engineering hours required earlier in the project, (ii) engineering hours required during construction execution (design errors, clarifications, changes, etc.), (iii) input/information deliverables from key suppliers, and (iv) the need for data integrity (consistency of line numbers, tags, etc.). Finally, a survey was distributed to industry experts examining these four changes and their directional change in AWP compared to traditional delivery (i.e., increase, decrease, remain the same). Findings indicate that increased need for data integrity and moving engineering hours earlier in the project are commonly observed changes when applying AWP. The findings of this

This paper explores the integration of causal pathway diagrams (CPD) into human-centered design (HCD), investigating how these diagrams can enhance the early stages of the designprocess. A dedicated CPD plugin for the online collaborative whiteboard platform Miro was developed to streamline diagram creation and offer real-time AI-driven guidance. through a user study with designers (N = 20), we found that CPD's branching and its emphasis on causal connections supported both divergent and convergent processes during design. CPD can also facilitate communication among stakeholders. Additionally, we found our plugin significantly reduces designers' cognitive workload and increases their creativity during brainstorming, highlighting the implications of AI-assisted tools in supporting creative work and evidence-based designs.

In this studio, we will explore the potential of inflatables for tangible interfaces by designing and fabricating inflatable props using a highly versatile and low-cost technique. The WireShape prototyping process can be used by researchers, makers, designers, and artists for the rapid and reliable manufacturing of inflatables. Based on our previous work [2], we introduce an accessible method for creating inflatable user interface elements using hand-made heat-sealing tools made from aluminum wire, applied to tpu-coated fabrics using a widely available T-shirt heat press. The resulting inflatable objects can be used as tangible artifacts for design and experience prototyping, or for the production of research prototypes. The proposed workshop will introduce participants to this method, focusing on the practical aspects of creating inflatables, and will enable participants to explore the potential of inflatables for unique and engaging interactions in the context of interaction design and data physicalisation. through hands-on activities, we will demonstrate how to sketch and create inflatables for tangible interfaces and discuss their benefits, limitations, and the possible integration of sensor technology. As a studio at TEI25, our goal is to facilitate a space where HCI researchers and designers can collaborate, create, and discuss opportunities and challenges.

Ring Oscillator Physical Unclonable Functions (RO-PUFs) take advantage of process variability during the manufacturing process to exploit the small differences in the RO oscillating frequencies and generate unique identifiers (ID). Its structure makes it suitable for, both, FPGA and ASIC applications. This paper presents a RO-PUF implementation using a semi-custom design methodology in TSMC 65nm technology which has been validated through the entire designprocess, manufactured and experimentally characterized. Results show a good performance and robustness against temperature and voltage variations while obtaining up to three bits from each execution to generate digital IDs.
