The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping industrial design by enhancing creativity and productivity. This study explores the integration of AI tools-specifically ChatGPT, DALL·E, Midjourney, and Vizcom-into the industrial design process and attempts to apply them in undergraduate industrial design education. By emphasizing the distinction between Pre-AI (divergent phase) and Post-AI (convergent phase) design stages, based on the design Council's Double Diamond model, the impact of AI-Assisted methods on creativity and the design process is examined. through two case studies involving a Golf Cart Project and a Conceptual Car Project, we analyze the balance between human creativity and AI technology to enhance innovation while maintaining the essential role of human judgment (design decision). The findings offer preliminary insights for transforming design education and practice, highlighting the importance of foundational design skills in the era of AI. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Evaluating and representing intricate design, simulation, and process outcomes for organic geometries can present limitations on traditional computing devices (computers, phones, and tablets) and remains a formidable challenge. This deficit in recognizing critical manufacturability concerns may result in several design revisions and iterations. Virtual Reality (VR) presents a compelling alternative to conventional 3D environments, particularly when visualizing and analyzing complex organic geometries during the part design and manufacturing stages. Our work focuses on developing an immersive virtual environment (ImVR) to evaluate and visualize design and process parameters for additive manufacturing of complex shapes. We create visualization-centric designs that empower users to render surface and volume-based part models for design exploration to identify and evaluate design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) features. These visualization-centric designs emphasize and enhance the detection of these DfAM features through corresponding visualized part models or through color plots shown to highlight these features. Further, we optimize the build using a genetic algorithm to formulate the best build orientation tailored to DfAM features. We create all the visualization-centric models for the different build orientations found optimally to showcase the impact of optimizing one DfAM feature on other corresponding parameters. On the process side, we implement a Digital Twin to visualize, control, and modify parameters in an FDM 3D printing process. The digital twin model mimics the real-time operation of the 3D printer, showing the generated print layer-by-layer. Bayesian Network, a predictive modeling algorithm, provides the recommended parameters for modifying the printing process. in the field of modern cryptography and-information security, the generation of random numbers is crucial, with the quality of the entropy source being paramount. This study explores the design of Ring Oscillator (RO)-based entropy sources, noted for their high manufacturability and ease of integration. However, the jitter produced by naive ROs is insufficient for high-quality entropy. We propose a design that significantly enhances jitter performance through the introduction of a harmonic injection path. This approach maintains high synthesizability while incurring only modest increases in area and power consumption. Experimental results demonstrate that the modified RO,fa bricated using a 180 nm process, elevated the average min-entropy from 0.058 / bit to 0.351/bit, offering new insights and substantial support for the development of high-quality random number generators. © 2024 IEEE.

Benefit from high performance, high integration density, high heat dissipation and relatively low cost, the application of MCM (multichip module) has spread from military, aerospace and mainframe computers to electronic system products such as automobiles, communications, industrial devices, instruments and medical equipment. However, unlike chip design or PCB design, there is no mature design method for MCM based on model. 2D drawing-based design software, such as AutoCAD, are still using for MCM design. Thus, the design file doesn't include sufficient manufacturing data for process design, such as manufacturability check and process flow design. In order to improve the actual efficiency and accuracy of the process design, a method based on model-based definition was approved. This method is applied in Allegro SiP Layout design platform and realized by secondary development using SKILL command language. through this method, a 3D model of MCM, which contains geometric dimension, cross-section of substrate, bill of materials (BOM), die type, bond wire and other definitive manufacturing data, is designed. With this model, an assembly manufacturability check, which evaluates the manufacturability and producibility of design model, can be applied along with designing. Then, a process flow design scheme, which includes the allocation of BOM, is generated using this design model. According to the test results of process design of MCM, this method was benefit for reducing design error, reducing reliance on manual experience, improving the automation of process design, and resulted in faster feedback loops, better decisions, and faster-to-market products.

Nowadays, modern vehicles comprise a vast number of components made from various materials and manufactured using different techniques, making the management of assemblability, functionality, and cost highly complex. This complexity necessitates controlling geometrical and dimensional deviations to meet product and process demands. Dimensional Management (DM), supported by standards such as ASME-GD&T and ISO-GPS, is increasingly employed for geometrical specification and tolerance analysis. through Computer-Aided Tolerancing (CAT) tools, tolerances can be considered early in the design process using design for Tolerancing (DfT) approaches. This study aims to develop and define a methodology for geometric specification allocation and tolerance stack-up analysis of automotive components. The methodology integrates predictive models, DM, and DfT approaches via computer-aided tolerance specification and analysis, enabling comprehensive modeling and simulation of tolerance effects on performance, quality, and assemblability. By applying this methodology to a vehicle engine assembly, its feasibility and effectiveness are demonstrated, showing how the integration of CAT tools and theoretical approaches can significantly enhance design accuracy and efficiency.

Advanced work packaging (AWP) is a project delivery framework that promotes early stakeholder integration and the need for planning, design, and procurement processes to align with an overall execution schedule. AWP presents similarities to other methods that promote integrated planning. However, AWP is distinct in its approach to providing a structured work process for both planning and execution. In fact, AWP increases the need for alignment of engineering, procurement, and construction through work packaging per phase, extending traditional practices. Literature has recognized that designers and engineers need to change their culture and process/workflow to implement AWP efficiently. However, what these specific changes are has yet to be explicitly evaluated. This study (1) explores the process-level changes in the early stages of the design phase that occur in industrial projects utilizing AWP and (2) investigates how these processes qualitatively compare with traditional delivery methods. To that end, the research team used input from 22 "industry experts" representing owners, contractors, and suppliers to understand design changes on AWP projects. After compiling a list of changes, three external experts identified four fundamental changes filtered down from the broader list. The changes include (i) engineering hours required earlier in the project, (ii) engineering hours required during construction execution (design errors, clarifications, changes, etc.), (iii) input/information deliverables from key suppliers, and (iv) the need for data integrity (consistency of line numbers, tags, etc.). Finally, a survey was distributed to industry experts examining these four changes and their directional change in AWP compared to traditional delivery (i.e., increase, decrease, remain the same). Findings indicate that increased need for data integrity and moving engineering hours earlier in the project are commonly observed changes when applying AWP. The findings of this

In the context of designing of customized products, ensuring the verification of requirements and stakeholder needs in an efficient and cost-effective manner poses significant challenges. This paper proposes a Virtual Prototyping approach, integrating Computer-Aided design and multibody modelling, to leverage their respective advantages. The presented case study involves the integration of two pre-existing robots, a cobot and an Autonomous Mobile Robot, to realize an Autonomous Mobile Cobot tailored to the specific needs of a manufacturing industry. through Virtual Prototyping approach, part of the requirements, including spatial and assembly constraint, are verified by means of CAD, while interaction and behavioural requirements are verified through multibody modelling and simulation. This work highlights the efficacy of Virtual Prototyping in achieving comprehensive design verification for tailored products. By simulating the behaviour and performance of the designed system before physical implementation, Virtual Prototyping reduces the time and costs associated with traditional trial-and-error methods. Moreover, it enables a more thorough exploration of design alternatives and optimization strategies, ultimately improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process. This integrated approach showcases the potential of digital tools to enhance the development of complex industrial systems, paving the way for tailored solutions to meet evolving market demands.

This paper investigates the application of Generative AI (GenAI) in the design processes of Thai Lue textiles, aiming to enhance creativity, sustainability, and cultural preservation. The study employs a three-phase methodology: Engagement and Ideation, AI integration and design Generation, and Human-AI Collaboration. In the first phase, community workshops with local students, designers, and artisans focused on capturing cultural values through hand-drawn designs inspired by community stories and personal reflections, emphasizing the 'Hand' and 'Heart' aspects to foster deep cultural connections and personal engagement. The second phase utilized AI tools like DALL-E to generate diverse design prototypes from detailed prompts, evaluating these AI-generated designs for cultural relevance and aesthetic appeal through qualitative interviews and observations. This phase demonstrated the "AI-Harmony"concept, illustrating AI's role in complementing human creativity and expanding design possibilities. The final phase featured collaborative workshops where artisans and designers refined the AI-generated designs, gathering feedback on AI tools' usability and creative impact. Card sorting techniques and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) studies were used to refine and validate design components, highlighting the effective synergy between human creativity and AI. This phase accelerated the design process and ensured that the outputs were both innovative and culturally resonant. The study's findings reveal the potential of GenAI to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern design elements, enhancing creative efficiency and making traditional crafts more appealing to younger generations. Anthropomorphic design cues (ADCs) refer to giving non-human objects human-like characteristics, widely used in human-computer interaction (HCI) and education. However, the current interactive modes of anthropomorphized knowledge roles (KRs) are relatively monotonous, with insufficient educational content integration, which may weaken user interaction and learning experiences. In this paper, we propose the Anthropomorphic-cues-Mediated Experiential Learning Game (AMELG) framework and implement a chemistry puzzle game called CheMate. In the framework, ADCs serve as intermediary signs, and KRs engage in interactions, providing feedback on player's actions. Subsequently, players reflectively observe the experiential process, associate abstract conceptualization with existing knowledge, understand new knowledge conveyed through ADCs, actively apply the knowledge, and thereby better memorize, understand, and master it. In the game, atoms KRs with different personalities can gather into molecules. These KRs are driven by large language models (LLMs) for dialogues. First, players talk with various KRs, accumulate intimacy, and gain the ability to move them. Then, players engage in searching, reasoning, and chemical reactions. The game dramatizes scenarios of chemical reactions. Players improve conditions or mediate through KR dialogues to drive the reactions. We set each reaction as a process of atoms' growth and provide the player with a retrospective review of it. A pilot study was conducted to validate the effectiveness of the framework, indicating its potential to enhance interactive experiences and learning outcomes. The article briefly summarizes and analyzes effective ADCs design methods in the game, and provides insights into the HCI modes of ADCs and their integration with educational content.

Based on the review of research methods in the design field, it can be found that the KJ method is heavily used in the information induction stage of user research, but the KJ method has the disadvantage of subjectivity in the clustering process. Quantitative research characteristics of the AHP method through weight calculation can effectively overcome the subjectivity of the KJ method, so the KJ method is combined with the AHP method to form a bottom-up exogenous innovation integration method. In this paper, the method is applied to the research on the topic of community new energy vehicle charging service designs in line with the current era, and outputs a set of service design for community new energy vehicle charging based on user needs research.
