Ice ingestion can lead to a range of detrimental effects, from diminished engine performance to potentially catastrophic failure, especially for the first compressor stages. As the ice is traveling through the engine, whether due to direct hail particle ingestion or due to shedding of ice accretions, the impact with engine components that rotate at high speed can result in severe mechanical damage. The leading edge of the blades in the low-pressure compressor are particularly prone to local damage. Therefore, it is important to consider ice impact simulations as soon as possible in the design process. In this context, the authors propose in this work a multi-disciplinary surrogate-based optimization strategy for a compressor rotor that includes ice impact simulations. For this purpose, a dedicated 3D blade parametrization is first introduced. Then, based on this set of design parameters, the proposed optimization chain is presented and each chain block is detailed. In particular, (1) aerodynamical simulations are considered at three different flight conditions, (2) maximum static stresses and frequency margins with respect to specific engine orders are evaluated, (3) the blade robustness to blade/casing contact events is assessed using the clearance consumption simplified criteria, and (4) ice impact simulations are carried out using transient response computations with an explicit time integration scheme and the ice fragment modeled with the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. A dedicated lower-fidelity model has been developed for the specific purpose of optimization loops to maintain reasonable computations times. The proposed strategy is applied to design a rotor blade of a low-pressure compressor. The aim is to satisfy all mechanical constraints to ensure the blade robustness in operation, without deteriorating its aerodynamic performance. A holistic railway infrastructure digital twin (DT) platform is sophisticated and consists of a series of submodels (e.g., turnouts, tracks, vehicles, etc.) that are built through various methodologies and software. However, integrating these submodels into the DT platform is tremendously challenging due to considerable computational complexity, software and interface restrictions. To this end, we designed a machine learning (ML) based surrogate modeling methodology for the submodel integration in the holistic railway infrastructure DT platform and illustrated the methodology through a case study. In this case study, an ML-based surrogate model for multibody simulation of railway vehicle-track dynamics is created, which can replace the railway vehicle-track simulation executed with the Multibody Dynamics (MBD) Simulation commercial software SimPACK. The well-built ML model can accurately and quickly predict the vehicle-track system's dynamic responses to different track irregularities. Besides, the integration process of the ML-based surrogate model into the DT platform through a standardized open-source Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) is also proposed. The developed surrogate modeling methodology shows great promise owing to its high fidelity, which is verified by the measurement data collected from the Austrian national railway track system. The main contribution of our work lies in the well-built ML-based surrogate modeling methodology for reducing the computation complexity and time of different submodels, which facilitates the unification and integration of different submodels. Furthermore, this approach can also be applied to other submodels and help to build the holistic railway DT platform collaboratively. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.v. Simulation-based verification of very-Large-Scale integration (vLSI) chip design is inevitable. However, the simulation speed can be a bottleneck in the verification process productivity. People tried to accelerate simulation-based verification through parallelization, emulation, and reducing the number of test scenarios, etc. In this paper, we exploited the power of abstraction of SystemC to design fast and accurate golden functional reference models. These reference models can be integrated in the Universal verification Methodology (UvM) based TestBench through Transaction Level Modeling (TLM). Thus, the UvM based TestBench interacts with the SystemC reference model to get the golden values, and use them for checking. We used the proposed methodology to verify the execution unit (EXU) of the open-source RISC-v based veeR EL2 processor core. The experimental results showed that the proposed TestBench architecture with SystemC reference model is up to 15x faster than the TestBench with Systemverilog reference model.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has become popular in recent years due to its integration with Industry 4.0 and for enabling the production of complex and optimized geometries. However, the process leads to disadvantages, such as thermal distortions and the generation of residual stresses due to thermal gradients during the parts production. Based on these undesirable characteristics, this work aims to model AM numerically through the Finite Element Method (FEM), besides obtaining experimental results that relate the impact of different process parameters, such as laser power, speed, and hatch distance on the residual stress and distortions distribution, to parts generated by Selective Laser Melting (SLM)-Powder Bed Fusion (PBF)-of titanium alloy Ti6Al4v. The experimental tests, as well as the numerical analyses, followed a factorial design. The results for thermal distortions are excellent with differences below 4.5% between the manufactured and simulated parts. As for the results of residual stresses measured at a single point on the lateral face, for most of the results, the difference was less than 4%;however, there was a large dispersion of results. When the values of average residual stresses were considered in the simulation, the results had statistical relevance and showed greater robustness. It was found that the average diameter of Ti6Al4v titanium parts was greatly influenced by the laser power followed by the hatch distance. The increase in power increased the average diameter of the samples, while the increase in speed and hatch decreased their diameter. In turn, increasing laser power decreased residual stress, while increasing speed and hatch tended to increase the mean residual stress.

Welding techniques, such as electrical resistance spot welding, are widely used in automotive manufacturing. Welded joints of metals consist of complex material zones and regions of different shapes that need to be reflected in the modelling process. Parametric modelling is an efficient tool to develop data and knowledge for the understanding of mechanical behaviour and the effect of key design and material parameters for the applications and technological developments related to the welded joint. This paper presents the focus of an integrated data-led approach for studying electrical spot welding. The use of predictive modelling to evaluate the effects of key parameters of welded joints is analysed. Typical data from a parametric finite element model is presented and used to analyse the effects of sheet thickness on the deformation, stress and strain data. One approach is through comparing the data before fracture and the other approach involves analysing data at comparable displacements before the onset pf severe deformation stage. The use of the data-led predictive modelling in materials and process development, as well as training and application-specific research-technology integration, are discussed. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study systematically discusses the innovative application of 3D CAD technology in automotive machinery design, and constructs a closed-loop design system from parametric modeling to multi-physics simulation. At the engineering verification level, taking the design of the conveyor chain of automobile axle forging as an example, the intermittent transmission mechanism was optimized based on virtual prototype simulation technology, and the dynamic trajectory planning and topology optimization algorithm of ratchet indexing device were adopted to significantly improve the motion stability and structural stiffness of the conveyor system. The results show that 3D CAD technology can systematically solve the efficiency bottleneck and engineering error problems in the traditional design process through four technical paths: parametric modeling, virtual assembly verification, modular deformation design and multi-physical field co-simulation, greatly reduce the design iteration cycle, and realize the deep integration of geometric accuracy and process specifications. © 2025 The Authors. Expert systems in industrial processes are modelled using physics-based approaches, data-driven models or hybrid approaches in which however the underlying physical models generally constitute a separate block with respect to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technique(s). This work applies the novel concept of "imbrication"-a physics-based AI approach-to the mooring system of offshore renewable energy devices to achieve a complete integration of both perspectives. This approach can reduce the size of the training dataset and computational time while delivering algorithms with higher generalization capability and explicability. We first undertake the design of the mooring system by developing a surrogate model coupled with a Bayesian optimiser. Then, we analyse the structural health monitoring of the mooring system by designing a supervised Deep Neural Network architecture. Herein, we describe the characteristics of the imbrication process, analyse preliminary results of our investigation and provide considerations for orienting further research work and sector applicability. © 2023 the Author(s).

Open Radio Access Networks (RAN) aim to bring a paradigm shift to telecommunications industry, by enabling an open, intelligent, virtualized, and multi-vendor interoperable RAN ecosystem. At the center of this movement, O-RAN ALLIANCE defines the O-RAN architecture and standards, so that companies around the globe can use these specifications to create innovative and interoperable solutions. To accelerate the adoption of O-RAN products, rigorous testing of O-RAN Radio Unit (O-RU) and other O-RAN products plays a key role. O-RAN ALLIANCE has approved around 20 Open Testing and integration Centres (OTICs) globally. OTICs serve as vendor-neutral platforms for providing the testing and integration services, with the vision that an O-RAN product certified in any OTIC is accepted in other parts of the world. To demonstrate the viability of such a certified-once-and-use-everywhere approach, one theme in the O-RAN Global PlugFest Spring 2024 is to demonstrate consistent and repeatable testing for the open fronthaul interface across multiple labs. Towards this, Japan OTIC and Asia Pacific OTIC in Singapore have teamed up together with an O-RU vendor and Keysight Technology. Our international team successfully completed all test cases defined by O-RAN ALLIANCE for O-RU conformance testing. In this paper, we share our journey in achieving this outcome, focusing on the challenges we have overcome and the lessons we have learned through this process. © 2024 IEEE.

The aim of work is to design sulfonating plant on the basis of a hydrophilic sulfonate head-group and a hydrophobic alkyl benzene tail-group reaction mechanism, study of kinetics and thermodynamics followed by a steady-state simulation for the process was done by ASPEN HYSYS (v8.8) through using Peng-Robinson fluid package. Then heat integration of the process, done by using Aspen Energy Analyzer and studies of the influence parameters on the simulated process of dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid. Alkyl benzene sulphonate is produced due to the sulphonation reaction of an alkylbenzene (LAB) plus a sulphonating agent in a falling film sulphonator to produce sulfonic acid (LABSA).The modeling of dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid plant depends on : Air drying, Sulphur melting and proportioning, Sulphur combustion and SO3 production, Film sulfonation. Dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid production rate is influenced by changing of the following factors: the sulfur molar flow rate, molar flow rate of air and pressure of dodecyl benzene, the results of optimization shows that : The optimum operating Molar flow rate of sulfur is lies in the range of [3:3.5] ***/h, The optimum operating Molar flow rate of Air is 25 ***/h, The optimum operating Molar flow rate of Dodecyl Benzene is 3.1 ***/h and The optimum operating Pressure of Dodecyl Benzene is 70 KPa. For heat integration, a proposed heat exchanger network is generated which made the process functional without external heating. Generation of the top 10 heat exchanger network (HEN) leads to: the best case scenario from the top 10 scenarios from the point of cost and also from the point of cooling and heating required was design (9). After heat integration, the total amount of cooling demand decreased from 912620.50 KJ/h to 890261.56 KJ/h and the total amount of heating demand decreased from 22358.94 KJ/h to 0KJ/h. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The progression of hybrid integration technology for compact electronics and photonics systems is placing increasing demands on the development of novel automated procedures capable of ensuring reliable integration with enhanced throughput. Concurrently, the complexity and density of components within packages, encompassing Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), wafer-level optics, photonics, and III-v optoelectronics, are on the rise. To tackle these challenges, a pioneering integration methodology based on laser-assisted bonding (LAB) is introduced. The devised LAB configuration employs an innovative bottom illumination/irradiation design coupled with simultaneous imaging through silicon, facilitating precise alignment for photonics waveguides. Additionally, the implementation of Automated Power Control in the LAB process safeguards against overheating of bonded surfaces, thereby enhancing integration process reliability and repeatability. through a practical demonstration, we validate the efficiency of the LAB technique by employing it for the integration of a multichannel 1×1 mm III/v chip onto a silicon photonic circuit. The localized application of heat during the LAB process rapidly elevates the temperature of the photonic circuit beyond the melting point of pre-deposited solder layers, resulting in successful bond formation with impedance levels in the hundredths of an Ohm range and shear bond force of 10.3 N/10.3MPa/1050.3gf, satisfying the MIL-STD-883H requirements (Methods 2019.8 and 2011.8F). Importantly, this process minimizes thermal-induced stress on bonded surfaces and mitigates warpage. This demonstration not only verifies the functionality of the LAB process but also underscores its potential to expand the frontiers of photonic integration. Particularly noteworthy is the rapid and energy-efficient nature of the LAB process, featuring bottom illumination/irradiation and simultaneous through-silicon imaging.
