The central payload video system, CPVS, is a highly flexible central video facility designed to perform processing on payload video as well as system video. Although developed under the Columbus program the CPVS can be easily integrated into any space station program such as Freedom and MIR. The CPVS is compatible with component video (Y,C) as well as with composite video (standard NTSC and PAL). The CPVS also supports non standard video high resolution (geometrical) and high frame rate (excellent time resolution) video. The CPVS is converting all received video into digital video. The standard formats are compatible with the world wide recognized standard, D1 (CCIR 601 and CCIR 656 compatible), and the non standard formats are compatible with an extrapolation of the D1 standard. The CPVS is able to process up to eight (8) simultaneous video channels. The CPVS is able to route any input to any or all processing elements using an internal switching and routing unit. The number and type of processing elements can be chosen according to every mission needs and new processing standards can be supported with little or no modification. The selected D1 standard ensures excellent video quality, and the fully redundant design of the CPVS ensures maximum availability of the system for the users. The selection of standard video formats and standard processing algorithms (compression) allows the use on ground of low-cost, off-the-shelf video equipment. The CPVS operation is based on tables which are generated on ground and loaded on board to be executed at a given on board time without the need of real time interaction.

Consumer-use digital VCRs and video discs have been developed integrating state-of-the-art magnetic and optical recording technologies and sophisticated video compression algorithms. The latter were made practical by the remarkable progress of semiconductor technology. For the future evolution of digital storage media, further improvement of the compression algorithm is essential. Low-power low-cost VLSI logic and memory technology, and logic-memory compatible process technology are keys for realization of the next-generation compression algorithm and digital storage media. A future dream for digital storage media is an all-solid-state consumer video recorder, that will become available sometime in the 21st century. When and how depend very much on the diligent efforts of semiconductor and digital signal-processing engineers.

Electronic holographic imaging, as developed at the MIT Media Laboratory's Spatial Imaging Group, is a truly 3D real-time digital imaging medium. Recent progress in holographic video has demonstrated that the crucial technologies - computation, electronic signal manipulation, and optical modulation and scanning - may be scaled up to produce larger, more interactive, full-color holographic images. The overcoming of communication bottlenecks relies on the use of newly-developed 'diffraction-specific' computational algorithms to produce encoded holograms that are compressed by factors of about twenty to one. Here we describe progress in the very rapid 'decompression' of the holograms with stream-processor hardware built for the Cheops video processing system. The result is that 36-MB holographic images may be updated over a SCSI link in about six seconds, approaching truly interactive speed.

The authors have an in-kind grant from NASA to investigate the application of the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) to teleradiology and telemedicine using the JPL developed ACTS Mobile Terminal (AMT) uplink. This experiment involves the transmission of medical imagery (CT, MR, CR, US and digitized radiographs including mammograms), between the ACTS/AMT and the University of Washington. This is accomplished by locating the AMT experiment van in various locations throughout Washington state, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Hawaii. The medical images are transmitted from the ACTS to the downlink at the NASA Lewis Research Center (LeRC) in Cleveland, Ohio, consisting of AMT equipment and the high burst rate-link evaluation terminal (HBR-LET). These images are then routed from LeRC to the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSoM) through the Internet and public switched Integrated Serviced digital Network (ISDN). Once images arrive in the UW Radiology Department, they are reviewed using both video monitor softcopy and laser-printed hardcopy. Compressed video teleconferencing and transmission of real-time ultrasound video between the AMT van and the UWSoM are also tested. Image quality comparisons are made using both subjective diagnostic criteria and quantitative engineering analysis. Evaluation is performed during various weather conditions (including rain to assess rain fade compensation algorithms). compression techniques also are tested to evaluate their effects on image quality, allowing further evaluation of portable teleradiology/telemedicine at lower data rates and providing useful information for additional applications (e.g., smaller remote units, shipboard, emergency disaster, etc.). The medical images received at the UWSoM over the ACTS are directly evaluated against the original digital images. In today's multimedia market, there are several hardware and software solutions to the transmission of video over a low bit-rate channel. The decoding part is relatively simple and inexpensive to implement. However, the encoding of full-size, high-quality video in real-time remains a complex and costly matter for the compression algorithms currently in use. A real-time digital video compression system (DVCS) has been developed to provide a solution to this problem, and make real-time video applications such as videoconferencing, digital video editing and several others affordable. Three-dimensional subband coding is used in the compression process because this algorithm is most compatible with the human visual system. The DVCS described in this paper is based on a simple subband coding algorithm which can be implemented in ASIC form with less than 50,000 gates. Hence, a much simpler and less expensive encoder/decoder chip can be implemented. The DVCS supports full screen, full-motion images at 30 frames/sec. A number of other standard resolution formats such as CCIR-601, CIF and QCIF are also supported. The intrinsic scalability of subband coding makes the compression system expandable to High-definition television by simply adding an additional image detail band.

digital audio compression and SCPC (single channel per carrier) technologies permit efficient distribution of audio and data to a network of radio stations using small antennas. Transmitting the SCPC signals on the band-edge of a video transponder can be a cost-effective way of providing the space segment. This paper describes the design phase and the results of implementing band-edge SCPC carriers on an analog-video transponder. Before attempting an operational test, Comsat Laboratories investigated the proposed configuration using the Comsat C-band transponder simulator. The simulation tests showed that the SCPC signals are more efficient than video subcarriers in use of transponder power and validated that band-edge SCPC could be achieved without degrading the analog video signal. The transponder can be operated into saturation. The actual implementation of the video and SCPC system required careful tradeoffs in the operating power of the video and the SCPC signals because of the power demands of the video signal and the need to operate in the nonlinear portion of the transponder. The system has been operating for more than a year. Three digital SCPC carriers, each with a FM-quality, stereo audio program, are received with 2.4 meter antennas throughout South America. VOA is now investigating digital-audio SCPC's operating with digital-video carriers on the same transponder. Preliminary results are also given here.< >

One of today's most exciting multimedia applications is the integration of video conferencing technology into the desktop computing environment. This technology has its roots in the telecommunications industry and its use in the desktop systems has created some interesting technical challenges. This paper explores limitations with traditional approaches to video conferencing and then introduces an object based approach which leverages built-in platform functionality. If utilizes a mostly software strategy along with the creation of a digital compression camera. The camera integrates video compression hardware with the optics and attaches to existing systems over a pervasive interface. The result is interoperable, standards based video conferencing at dramatically lower price points.

A key issue and major distinguishing factor amongst manufacturers of compression-based digital storage devices are the proprietary algorithms used to compress the video data to be stored. The compression algorithms employed can have a significant impact on the resultant picture quality and deliverable features, readily differentiating one manufacturer over another. Similar to other video compression technology developers involved in such standardization efforts as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, the algorithm developers for video storage equipment based on compression techniques are hesitant to include algorithm descriptions in standards documents.

This paper shows how a real-time simulator of moving pictures compression algorithms can be rapidly assembled using a basic building block, here called MOVIE (MOdule for video Experimentation). The internal architecture of the MOVIE VLSI chip can be compared to a small systolic machine made of a 32-bit I/O processor, a reduced linear array of 16-bit computation processors and data video input/output mechanisms. Externally, the chip is provided with four 16-bit bidirectional data ports and three 16-bit bidirectional data video port. Several MOVIE chips can be easily clustered to allow the size of the linear array of computation processors to be increased. The MOVIE chip is fully programmable in a high level language in order to make program developments easier.

Adaptive video coding algorithms are digital video compression algorithms that can adapt the encoding of a video stream dynamically based on the amount of bandwidth available on the network. While such algorithms are more complicated than traditional video coding algorithms, they are attractive because of their inherent robustness to changes in network load (i.e. network congestion). Adaptive video coding algorithms seem particularly suitable for high speed network environments, such as B-ISDN/ATM, that offer Available Bit Rate (ABR) services. The goal of this paper is to assess the role that adaptive video coding algorithms will play in future high speed networks. The paper presents a simple mathematical model and analysis of several hypothetical video coding algorithms for high speed networks, and a simulation study of one such adaptive video coding algorithm that we have implemented in a local area network environment. The results show that adaptive video coding algorithms are indeed robust across a wide range of network loads. More importantly, however, the results suggest that the domain of adaptive video coding algorithm is quite narrow: moderately to heavily loaded networks with speeds on the order of 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps. As a result, adaptive video coding algorithms will likely play only a limited role in future high speed networks.
