Among various transform techniques for image compression, the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is the most popular and effective one in practical applications because it gives an almost optimal performance and can be implemented at an acceptable cost. The transform coding utilizing the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has been commonly adopted in the various standards for image compression. These include the CCITT standard for video telephony, the JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) standard for coloured still-image transmission and the MPEG (Motion Pictures Expert Group) standard for pictures on the storage media. MPEG was originally developed for digital television, its popularity and effectiveness as a storage/transmission format and abundance of content have made it attractive for use in personal video playback devices. DCT based coding schemes are also used for higher quality applications such as HDTV. Therefore, an architecture which rapidly computes DCT has become a key component of image compression VLSIs. This paper reviews the existing efficient algorithms for implementing the reconfigurable Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)/ Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (IDCT) architecture for multimedia applications and proposed an algorithm which offers high speed and reduced area. The proposed architecture uses an error compensated adder tree to perform shifting and addition operations. The reconfigurable architecture not only decreases the time of research and development but also saves fabrication cost. The advantages of the proposed architecture are that this architecture does not require multipliers and ROM. It only needs adders and shifters. In digital circuits, the area of the multipliers and ROM are larger than adders and shifters.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) video offers the possibility, for the first time, of capturing, storing, manipulating, and displaying dynamic real-world lighting. This gives a step change in viewing experience, for example the ability to clearly see the football when it is kicked from the shadow of the stadium into sunshine. An HDR video camera now exists which is capable of capturing 20 f-stops at full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) at 30 frames per second and commercial HDR displays are available. However, there are many significant challenges that still need to be overcome if HDR video is to be widely adopted and move from a niche research area into mainstream use. These include the need for high quality compression algorithms to cope with the enormous amount of data generated, the development of a common interface standard to facilitate widespread uptake, and even a definition of exactly what HDR is and what dynamic range might be considered "enough". This paper investigates these challenges and highlights some of the key endeavours being undertaken to ensure HDR is the future of imaging technology.

The availability of multimedia information has been increased dramatically with the advent of video broadcasting on handheld devices. But with this availability comes problems of maintaining the security of information that is displayed in public. ISMA Encryption and Authentication (ISMACryp) is technologies for video content protection in DVB-H (digital video Broadcasting-Handheld), the TV system for portable handheld devices. The ISMACryp is encoded with H. 264/AVC (advanced video coding), while leaving all structural data as it is. Two modes of ISMACryp are available;the CTR mode (Counter type) and CBC mode (Cipher Block Chaining) mode. Both modes of ISMACryp are based on 128-bit AES algorithm. This paper deals with AES-CTR mode. AES algorithms are more complex and require larger time for execution which is not suitable for real time application like Live TV, video chatting or video conferencing on handheld device. The proposed system aims to gain a deep understanding of video data security on multimedia technologies and to provide security for real time video applications using selective encryption for H. 264/AVC. Five level of security proposed in this paper based on the content of NAL unit in Baseline Constrain profile of H. 264/AVC. The selective encryption in different levels provides encryption of intra-prediction mode, residue data, inter-prediction mode or motion vectors only. Experimental results shown in this paper described that fifth level which is ISMACryp provide higher level of security with more encryption time and the one level provide lower level of security by encrypting only motion vectors with lower encryption time without compromise on compression and quality of visual content. This encryption scheme with compression process with low cost, and keeps the file format unchanged with some direct operations supported. Simulation was being carried out in Matlab.

This paper describes the details and the results of the subjective quality evaluation performed at EPFL, as a contribution to the effort of the Joint Collaborative Team on video Coding (JCT-VC) for the definition of the next-generation video coding standard. The performance of 27 coding technologies have been evaluated with respect to two H.264/MPEG-4 AVC anchors, considering high definition (HD) test material. The test campaign involved a total of 494 naive observers and took place over a period of four weeks. While similar tests have been conducted as part of the standardization process of previous video coding technologies, the test campaign described in this paper is by far the most extensive in the history of video coding standardization. The obtained subjective quality scores show high consistency and support an accurate comparison of the performance of the different coding solutions.

digital video technology is burgeoning new standards broadening the gamut of prerequisites such as high definition video quality and more resolution substantially at lower bit rates than previous standards. Among the latest video compression algorithms, the newly established H.264 standard has become increasingly popular. However, the high coding efficiency of it comes at the cost of increase in computational complexity which makes the real-time implementation a great challenge. Previous works in video compression implement a dual core DSP processor executing this composite H.264 algorithm in parts, but has certain bottlenecks like timing, reliability and efficiency with a small overhead of synchronization. With higher interprocessor bus speeds, streamlined memory and a highly programmable FPGA multi-core architecture the limitations of current platforms based on DSPs and ASICs can be overwhelmed. This paper presents an FPGA based multicore processor implementation to optimize the H.264 encoder performance between the cores providing scalability, attaining load balance among the cores and parallel execution reducing the dependability of resources. This enables a more effectual use of processing power of the cores.

Visual media is growing massively at a rapid pace. This is due to the advancement of broadband networks/internet, DSP/media processors and VLSI technology. Application areas include high definition television, multimedia communications and teleconferencing. Despite rapid increase in mass-storage density, processor speeds, and digital communication data rates, the demand for visual data storage and visual data transmission bandwidth continues to surpass the capabilities of available technologies. Hence, there have been increasing efforts to develop reliable visual data compression techniques that provide a cost effective solution for the storage and transmission of visual data. The recent MPEG 4 and JPEG 2000 standards address the need for content-based compression, coding and manipulation of visual media. With the evolution and inexpensiveness of hardware programmable devices such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA's), the implementation and realization of different image and video coding algorithms has become possible and affordable in many of the visual data communication and storage industries, such as digital TV receivers, mobile devices and internet communications servers.

video data compression is one the core technologies of video conference, which aims to enable significantly high performance data coding. In order to achieve this, a robust rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique is needed to be employed to select the best coding mode This paper presents optimization solution about inter prediction mode decision algorithm of H.264/AVC for video conference under the HLA/RTI framework. Our objective is to reduce the computational complexity of the CODEC (coder & decoder) with insignificant rate-distortion performance degradation.

Due to rapid increase in data growth and tremendous advancement in digital video technology, it becomes necessary to minimize the amount of data to be transmitted. There are various compression-standards widely used to store and transmit data in efficient manner such as, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards address the audio, video and speech data effectively. MPEG-4 comprises the features of both standards as well object slicing. In this proposed work we addressed the effectiveness of video compression, Analysis of MPEG-4 block matching algorithms and the CODEC development. The results of MPEG-4 and CODEC achieve high compression ratio, low computational complexity and with good resolution are encouraging.

Recently we proposed a wavelet-based dynamic range compression algorithm to improve the visual quality of digital images captured in the high dynamic range scenes with non-uniform lighting conditions. The fast image enhancement algorithm which provides dynamic range compression preserving the local contrast and tonal rendition is a very good candidate in aerial imagery applications such as image interpretation for defense and security tasks. This algorithm can further be applied to video streaming for aviation safety. In this paper the latest version of the proposed algorithm which is able to enhance aerial images so that the enhanced images are better then direct human observation, is presented. The results obtained by applying the algorithm to numerous aerial images show strong robustness and high image quality.
