A new generation of field-rated optical subtraction instruments for the standoff detection of chemicals will be presented. It combines the latest ABB Bom em spectroradiometer technology and software with the concepts used in the design of the original instrument designed and manufactured more than 12 years ago by ABB and Defence Research and Development Canada - Valcartier. This instrument is a Fourier-transform spectroradiometer with dual input beams. It is a passive, stand-off sensor that uses one input port to interrogate a scene under investigation while the other input beam can be pointed at the background scene. The instrument automatically measures the difference of spectral radiance between the target and the background scenes by optical subtraction, hence achieving a real-time suppression of the background signal. The resulting measurement is the unique spectral signature of the target measured in real time. The system includes a software module to control the instrument and the acquisition parameters, a module for the radiometric calibration and a module to perform the identification and quantification, in real time, of various gases. An overview of the instrument design and initial results of tests are presented.

The U.S. Army Research Office (ARO) and the U.S. Army Edgewood chemical Biological Center (ECBC) jointly lead and support novel research programs that are advancing the state-of-the-art in nanoelectronic engineering in application areas that have relevance to national defense and security. One fundamental research area that is presently being emphasized by ARO and ECBC is the exploratory investigation of new bio-molecular architectural concepts that can be used to achieve rapid, reagent-less detection and discrimination of biological warfare (BW) agents, through the control of multi-photon and multi-wavelength processes at the nanoscale. This paper will overview an ARO/ECBC led multidisciplinary research program presently under the support of the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) that seeks to develop new devices and nanoelectronic architectures that are effective for extracting THz signatures from target bio-molecules. Here, emphasis will be placed on the new nanosensor concepts and THz/optical measurement methodologies for spectral-based sequencing/identification of genetic molecules.

Vescent Photonics Inc. and Jet Propulsion Lab are jointly developing an innovative ultra-compact (volume < 10 cm(3)), ultra-low power (< 10(-3) Watt-hours per measurement and zero power consumption when not measuring), completely non-mechanical electro-optic Fourier transform spectrometers (EO-FTS) that will be suitable for a variety of remote-platform, in-situ measurements. These devices are made possible by a novel electro-evanescent waveguide architecture, enabling "chip-scale" EO-FTS sensors. The potential performance of these EO-FTS sensors include: i) a spectral range throughout 0.4-5 mu m (25000 - 2000 cm(-1)), ii) high-resolution (Delta lambda <= 0. 1 nm), iii) high-speed (< 1 ms) measurements, and iv) rugged integrated optical construction. This performance potential enables the detection and quantification of a large number of different atmospheric gases simultaneously in the same air mass and the rugged construction will enable deployment on previously inaccessible platforms. The sensor construction is also amenable for analyzing aqueous samples on remote floating or submerged platforms. To date a proof-of-principle prototype EO-FTS sensor has been demonstrated in the near-IR (range of 1450-1700 nm) with a 5 run resolution. This performance is in good agreement with theoretical models, which are being used to design and build the next generation of EO-FTS devices.

Standoff detection, identification and quantification of chemicals in the gaseous state is one important application. Analysis of the surface emissivity as a means to classify ground properties and usage is another one. Imaging spectrometers have unmatched capabilities to meet the requirements of these applications. Telops has developed the FIRST, a LWIR hyperspectral imager. The FIRST is based on the Fourier Transform technology yielding high spectral resolution and enabling high accuracy radiometric calibration. The FIRST, a man portable sensor, provides datacubes of up to 320x256 pixels at 0.35mrad spatial resolution over the 8-12 mu rn spectral range at spectral resolutions of up to 0.25cm(-1). The FIRST has been used in several field campaigns, including the demonstration of standoff chemical agent detection [http://***/10.1117/12.788027.1]. More recently, an airborne system integrating the FIRST has been developed to provide airborne hyperspectral measurement capabilities. The airborne system and its capabilities are presented in this paper. The FIRST sensor modularity enables operation in various configurations such as tripod-mounted and airborne. In the airborne configuration, the FIRST can be operated in push-broom mode, or in staring mode with image motion compensation. This paper focuses on the airborne operation of the FIRST sensor.

Additional required sensor characteristics include high sensitivity, low false alarms and high-speed (ideally real-time) operation, all in a compact and robust package. The thermal infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum has been utilized to implement such chemical sensors, either with spectrometers (with none or moderate imaging capability) or with imagers (with moderate spectral capability). Only with the recent emergence of high-speed, large format infrared imaging arrays, has it been possible to design chemical sensors offering uncompromising performance in the spectral, spatial, as well as the temporal domain. Telops has developed an innovative instrument that can not only provide an early warning for chemical agents and toxic chemicals, but also one that provides a "chemical Map" in the field of view. To provide to best field imaging spectroscopy instrument, Telops has developed the FIRST, Field-portable Imaging Radiometric Spectrometer technology.. instrument. This instrument is based on a modular design that includes: a high-performance infrared FPA and data acquisition electronics, onboard data processing electronics, a high-performance Fourier transform modulator, dual integrated radiometric calibration targets and a visible boresight camera. These modules, assembled together in an environmentally robust structure, used in combination with Telops' proven radiometric and spectral calibration algorithms make this instrument a world-class passive standoff detection system for chemical imaging. This paper presents chemical detection and identification results obtained with the FIRST sensor.

In June 2005, a newly develop long wave Focal Pane Array (FPA), based on photo-voltaic technology was delivered to the Defense Research & Development of Canada (DRDC). This development was part of technological Demonstration program that was founded by the DRDC. This paper will describe the FPA configuration along with its performance assessment configured in the Air PIRATE FTIR spectrometer. Air PIRATE is an airborne version of the hyper spectral spectrometer used by the Canadian Defense for target identification, as well as chemical agent identification.
