In this paper, we review some recent advances in optical parametric oscillator (OPO) technology, discuss major coherent source issues and then propose possible solutions that have relevance to remote chemical sensing. The authors discuss their latest results on two OPO schemes. 1) Energies up to 1.2 mJ/pulse and continuously tunable OPO output from 6.7 to 9.8 mu m was obtained using a 5 x 5 x 25 mm(3) type ii AgGaS2 crystal, pumped directly by a 10 ns, 1.06 mu m Nd:YAG laser. 2) The 3.5 mu m idler output from a Nd:YAG pumped KTA OPO was used to pump a second OPO using NCPM ZnGeP2 to generate output near 8 mu m. The tandem OPO produced pulse energies of > 1.5 mi at 7.8 mu m with an energy conversion efficiency of 6.8%. Finally, we describe schemes for generating multiple photons in the 8 - 12 mu m band from one initial 1 mu m pump photon, and thereby increase the quantum efficiency when OPOs are pumped by Nd:YAG lasers.

Counterfeiting and diversion of brand name products is a significant worldwide problem. Loss of revenue to the manufacturers is obviously important, however erosion of consumer confidence, and liability for adverse health effects or performance caused by poor quality product can be of even greater significance. Biocode has developed a novel approach to product marking and identification that utilizes molecular binding pair technologies such as immunoassay. The sensitivity, specificity, and ease of use of immunoassay provides a powerful method for detecting trace levels of intentionally added chemical markers. Using the diversity of the immune response, Biocode has developed a Library of binding molecules and highly sensitive immunoassay systems for detection and measurement of a variety of chemical markers. The markers have been selected based on their stability and compatibility within various types of products. For food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications, common and naturally occurring food ingredients and pharmaceutical excipients provide markers which are safe, readily available, and already approved for use. For other applications such as fuel and lubricant marking, solubility an chemical stability of the markers are a major consideration, in addition to incorporating markers directly into products, Biocode has also developed invisible inks that can be printed onto the surface of products, packaging, or labels. The trace levels of marker that is printed onto the surface of a product or package can only be revealed by using the complementary binding pair that has been developed by Biocode. This technology provides for simple field tests and very high level of security as it is virtually impossible to copy.

Computerized infrared thermographic pipeline inspection is now a refined and accurate process having been thoroughly proven to be an accurate, cost effective, and efficient technology for pipeline rehabilitation programs, during a 10 year development and testing process. The process has been used to test pipelines in chemical plants, water supply systems, steam lines, natural gas pipelines and sewer systems. Ils non-contact, non-destructive ability to inspect large areas, from above ground, with 100% coverage sand to locate subsurface leaks as well as the additional capability to locate voids and erosion areas surrounding pipelines, make its testing capabilities unique and highly desirable. This paper will detail the development of computerized infrared thermographic pipeline testing along with case histories illustrating its implementation problems and successes during various rehabilitation programs involving pipelines carrying water, gas, petroleum, and sewage.

First steps in the development-of a new method for the remote detection of gaseous emanations by FTIR are presented. The method is based on the use of a double beam interferometer-spectrometer (CATSI) optimized for optical subtraction. The instrument is described with a particular emphasis on its capabilities for differential detection and background suppression. Radiometric equations applicable to the differential detection of gaseous emanations by FTIR are established for the general case of slant path scenarios containing any type of background scenes. Finally the potential of the method is illustrated through several laboratory measurements done with the CATSI system.

Recently, Bomem developed CATSI, a small FTIR system referred to as the Compact ATmospheric Sounding Interferometer. In order to meet the highest radiometric precision and accuracy, the instruments performs calibrations, using observations of hot and cold blackbody reference sources as the basis for a two-point calibration at each wavenumber. This paper presents the results of the analysis of the radiometric calibration of this instrument, with emphasis on the temporal behavior of the instrument response.

A novel scheme of a laser-based chemical sensor has been examined. The scheme is based on the lasing frequency shift of a DBR laser as a result of refractive index change of the sensitive coating in the presence of chemicals in question. The applicability and advantages of different schemes are discussed. The results of preliminary experiments related to the construction and stability of an external cavity DBR laser and interferometric measurements of refractive index change are presented.

Many chemical warfare agents are dispersed as small aerosol particles. In the past, most electro-optical excitation and detection schemes have used continuous or pulsed lasers with pulse lengths ranging from nanoseconds to microseconds. In this paper, we present interesting ongoing new results on femtosecond imaging and on the time dependent solutions to the scattering problem of a femtosecond laser pulse interacting with a single small aerosol particle. Results are presented for various incident pulse lengths. Experimental imaging results using femtosecond pulses indicate that the diffraction rings present when using nanosecond laser pulses for imaging are greatly reduced when femtosecond laser pulses are used. Results are presented in terms of the internal fields as a function of time and the optical size parameter.

Photothermal detection methods use the light-absorbing sample material as the sensor transducer. Photothermal displacement methods using interferometric detection will be used to measure environmental analytes particularly if those analytes can be incorporated into the sensor probe. We are using various nanoporous optical sol-gel materials in sensor probes for photothermal detection. Photothermal sensors made using sol-gel materials have advantages for infrared and near infrared photothermal in situ detection including improved sensitivity, lower limits of detection, easier miniaturization, and room-temperature operation. The potential for photothermal interferometric near infrared detection of organophosphorus compounds adsorbed in silica sol-gel is demonstrated.

The brief description of new lidar prototype for remote chemical monitoring and profiling in the 8-12 micron range is given. The Lidar includes a Nd:YAG laser (1 J per pulse) source, optical parametrical oscillator (0.2 J per pulse), and four-wave Raman emitter (20 mi output per pulse). The receiver consists of the hydrogen SRS cells, pumped by an additional OPO pulse. Sensitivity of this receiver reaches similar to 1000 photons per pixel.
