Vertical organic permeable base transistors (OPBTs), characterized by a unique vertical structure, have demonstrated superior DC and AC performance. We characterize the fabricated OPBTs to calibrate a TCAD simulation, enabling us to further analyze the working principles of the device, as well as optimize and model the OPBTs. This study simplifies the complex structure of OPBTs in terms of their DC performance, thereby facilitating easier simulation, analysis, and compact model development. A charge-based compact model is adapted for OPBTs by considering the above mentioned simplification. The compact model and TCAD simulations are then compared to experimental data of an OPBT, showing a good agreement between them.

Substitution of europium (iii) in hydroxyapatite lattice for luminescence applications: Integrating experimental and theoretical insights

Europium(iii) (Eu3+/Eu(iii)) substitution in the hydroxyapatite (HAp) lattice imparts luminescence properties, enabling its application in diagnostics and bioimaging. Despite numerous experimental studies, there has been a lack of comprehensive discussion on the substitution behavior and local structural stability of Eu3+ within HAp. In this study, experimental and first-principles investigations were integrated to explore and understand the substitution of Eu3+ in HAp. Optimization of various HAp models revealed the dependency of Eu3+ substitution site on the charge compensation mechanism. Eu3+ prefers the Ca(2) site when OH is converted to O and the Ca(1) site in the presence of a Ca vacancy. Phonon calculations showed that temperature influences charge compensation and site preference, favoring OH to O compensation and Eu3+ in Ca(2) at higher temperatures and Ca vacancy and Eu3+ in Ca(1) at lower temperatures. Electronic structure simulations explained that the luminescence in Eu(iii)-substituted HAp primarily arises from charge transfer between Eu3+ and O atoms, supported by experimental photoluminescence measurements. Correspondence between simulations and experimental photoluminescence data emphasizes the reliability of the computational approach in this study. The integration of insights from experimental and simulation results enhances the understanding of substitution of Eu3+ in the HAp lattice, providing valuable guidance for designing and optimizing HAp-based luminescent and optical materials.

The dissolution of galactomannans in type II/iii deep eutectic solvents: Effect of polysaccharide structure and interaction mechanism

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have garnered increasing attention as sustainable solvents for natural polysaccharides. Galactomannans (especially guar and locust bean gums) are abundant natural compounds used in food, medicine, agriculture and daily chemical products, whereas their high molecular weight and randomly distributed non-linear structures remain a huge challenge in solubilization and high value-added utilization. In this study, the dissolution of galactomannans in type II/iii DESs was comprehensively investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculation, experimental results, and molecular dynamics simulation (MD). The results indicated that immense anionic and neutral H-bonds supported by type II DESs (consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt and a metal chloride hydrate) could break and rebuild galactomannan H-bond networks, thereby exhibiting remarkable physical solubilization. A large number of active acid sites in type iii DESs (consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt and a hydrogen bond donor) greatly improved solubility and cleaved the glycosidic bond, enabling the recovery of polysaccharides with a target molecular weight. Furthermore, significant correlations between solubility and the structure of galactomannans had been established, which meant that high molecular weight and rich galactose side-chains produced repulsive interactions with DESs, directly hindering dissolution. Overall, this work not only offered a framework for enhancing the dissolution of polysaccharides, but also proposed a promising strategy for development of task specific DESs promoting green chemistry and the use of sustainable bioresources.

Visible light communication (VLC) has been recently proposed for enabling high bandwidth datalinks in vehicular scenarios (V-VLC). Due to the particular geometrical characteristics of the datalink between vehicles, wide field of view (FoV) and high optical gain are required for guaranteeing reliable communications. To achieve these features while providing high modulation bandwidth the design of angle diversity receivers (ADRs), which basically are composed of a set of photodiodes following an angular arrangement is considered in this work. Specifically, two design approaches based on hemispherical lenses and compound parabolic concentrators are analyzed considering the dimensional constraints of the ADRs. simulation results show that CPC-based ADRs obtain a greater trade-off between optical gain and FoV subject to higher dimensional constraints.

This paper presents an introductory tutorial based on the simulation Exploration Experience (SEE) 2024, highlighting a collaborative effort by NASA, SISO and international academic partners to model lunar facilities and habitats through the High-Level Architecture (HLA) for distributed simulations. Focused on federating simulations of lunar infrastructure, this paper outlines methodical steps for creating and executing models that incorporate communication systems and 3D visualizations to support educational and research initiatives in space exploration. Reflecting on SEE 2024’s advancements, the tutorial emphasizes significant progress in using simulation technology to promote innovation and collaboration across various scientific disciplines. With the continuous progress of science and technology, people's requirements for training systems are getting higher and higher. Traditional training systems cannot meet people's training needs, so this article proposes a method based on 3D virtual simulation to improve the training system. Based on virtual reality technology, a real and interactive virtual environment is created. Through 3D modeling and the use of physics engines, the realism of the scene and the motion simulation of objects are realized, and human-computer interaction and intelligent algorithms are combined to enable the system to make adaptive adjustments and personalized training based on user behavior and feedback. The research results show that the resource utilization rate of this system can reach 78%-93%. The training system based on 3D virtual simulation is a powerful tool that can provide a highly realistic environment and interactivity, enabling learners to carry out practical learning and training. © 2024 IEEE.

Sparse LU factorization is the indispensable building block of the circuit simulation, and dominates the simulation time, especially when dealing with large-scale circuits. Radio frequency (RF) circuits have been increasingly emphasized with the evolution of ubiquitous wireless communication (i.e., 5G and WiFi). The RF simulation matrices show a distinctive pattern of structured dense blocks, and this pattern has been inadvertently overlooked by prior works, leading to the underutilization of computational resources. In this paper, by exploiting the block structure, we propose a novel blocked format for L and U factors and re-design the large-scale sparse LU factorization accordingly, which leverages the data locality inherent in RF matrices. The data format transformation is streamlined, strategically eliminating the redundant data movement and costly indirect memory access. Moreover, the vector operations are converted into matrix operations, enabling efficient data reuse and enhancing data-level parallelism. The experiment results demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance compared to state-of-the-art implementation.

This paper proposes a parallel acoustic characterization simulation method for near-surface targets. This method is based on the Shooting and Bouncing Ray (SBR)) method and allows for the high-precision simulation of near-surface target acoustic characteristics. Furthermore, it enables the acceleration of the simulation computation process of complex shape near-surface targets by utilizing a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) platform. By employing an equivalent decomposition of near-surface target acoustic field echoes, the task scale of 10 billion acoustic beam lines is exceeded on a multi-GPU cluster, thereby enabling the rapid and precise simulation of the acoustic characteristics of large near-surface targets. This approach has significant potential for a wide range of applications. © 2024 IEEE.

In modern datacenter networks (DCNs), load balancing mechanisms are widely deployed to enhance link utilization and alleviate congestion. Recently, a large number of load balancing algorithms have been proposed to spread traffic among the multiple parallel paths. The existing solutions make rerouting decisions for all flows once they experience congestion on a path. They are unable to distinguish between the flows that really need to be rerouted and the flows that potentially have negative effects due to rerouting, resulting in frequently ineffective rerouting and performance degradation. To address the above issues, we present a traffic-differentiated load balancing (TDLB) mechanism, which focuses on distinguishing flows that necessarily to be rerouted and employing corresponding measures to make optimize routing decisions. Specifically, TDLB detects path congestion based on queue length at the switches, and distinguishes the traffic that must be rerouted through the host pair information in the packet header, and selects an optimal path for rerouting. The remaining traffic remains on the original path and relies on congestion control protocols to slow down to alleviate congestion. The NS-2 simulation results show that TDLB effectively reduces tailing latency and average flow completion time (FCT) for short flows by up to 45% and 46%, respectively, compared to the state-of-the-art load balancing schemes.

SHP2SIM: a python pipeline for Modelica based district and urban scale energy simulations

Energy simulation models are crucial to estimate the energy demand of buildings, especially for prospective planning on a district or city scale. As required input data is not available in many cases, an automated model generation workflow is needed. Existing workflows have several disadvantages, including: (i) dependence on large input datasets of existing buildings;(ii) no 3D representation to support the planning process;(iii) they are proprietary solutions. The pipeline 'SHP2SIM' is an open-source python pipeline enabling enrichment and generation of building energy simulation models based on little input data for district and urban scale. The pipeline is tested by simulating the heat load for a district with 27 buildings and validated for one building: R squared is 0.9825, CV(RMSE) is 22.10%, and NMBE is 4.06% on a monthly basis. To enable reproducibility and encourage open science, input data, output models, and the pipeline are openly available (https://***/tug-cps/shp2sim).
