Automated execution of computational workflows has become a critical issue in achieving high productivity in various research and development fields. Over the last few years, workflows have emerged as a significant abstraction of numerous real-world processes and phenomena, including digital twins, personalized medicine, and simulation-based science in general. k-Dispatch is a novel tool designed for the efficient offloading of biomedical workflows to remote high-performance computing clusters or cloud. In addition to data transfers, reporting, error handling and remote computations monitoring, k-Dispatch leverages a set of optimizations to dynamically determine suitable execution parameters for individual tasks within workflows, aiming to meet predefined constraints and optimization criteria. k-Dispatch has been successfully deployed within k-Plan, an advanced modelling tool for planning transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) procedures.

Most existing distributed simulation platforms lack native support for Python scripts, thereby hindering the seamless integration of AI models developed in Python. Some simulation platforms support script languages like Lua or javascript, but scheduling tasks in heterogeneous simulation platforms that are composed of simulation engine and script engine is a challenging problem. Moreover, conventional task scheduling methods often overlook the simulation time constraints, which are essential for simulation synchronization. In this paper, we propose a Heterogeneous Distributed simulation Platform (HDSP) that could integrate different script languages, especially Python, to empower the simulation by leveraging intelligent AI models. A Dynamic Multi-Objective Optimization (D-MO) Scheduler is also designed to efficiently schedule simulation tasks that run across heterogeneous simulation engines and satisfy simulation synchronization constraints. HDSP integrates various script engines, enhancing its adaptability to model dynamic simulation logic using different script languages. D-MO Scheduler optimizes simulation Acceleration Ratio (SAR), Average Weighted Waiting Time (AWWT), and Resource Utilization (RU). The D-MO scheduling problem is characterized as an NP-hard problem, tackled using the NSGA-iii algorithm. The simulation time synchronization constraints are implemented through Lower Bound on Time Stamp (LBTS) and lookahead approach. The comparative results and statistical analysis demonstrate the superior efficacy and distribution performance of proposed D-MO Scheduler. The proposed HDSP and D-MO Scheduler significantly boost the capability to support Python-based AI algorithms, and navigate complex scheduling demands efficiently. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – science and technology Publications, Lda.

We present an Augmented Reality (AR) experience, enabling user interaction with a Virtual Human (VH) of an older adult. We demonstrate the feasibility of the technology to foster communication and social connection between caregivers (users) and older adults (the VH). We developed a 3D model of an embodied virtual geriatric patient that demonstrates awareness of its environment and conversations, and implemented a networking protocol for remote response control with a human in the loop.

A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical system, continuously updated with data from the physical system, enabling dynamic information exchange and decision-making. This bidirectional interaction, the key distinction from traditional simulations, introduces unique challenges to simulation optimization. These challenges encompass streaming data, system nonstationarity, and real-time decision-making. This tutorial reviews recent advancements and methodologies aimed at addressing these issues, with a focus on data-driven simulation optimization under streaming data. © 2024 IEEE.

Power amplifier design is one of the interesting issues in radio frequency science. Optimizing a power amplifier can improve the efficiency of a transmitter. In this paper, a novel method to optimize PA based evolutionary algorithm was presented for wireless applications. The proposed method used Gray Wolf Optimization as a robust algorithm to find the best values of the microstrip lines in the structure of a PA. After optimization, harmonic balance simulation was applied to validate the proposed algorithm. simulation results have shown an average of PAE higher than 50%, an output power above 37.5 dBm and the input and the output return losses lower than -10 dB over the frequency range of 2.4-3 GHz.

Hysteresis comparator is widely used in integrated circuits, and it is a key module in analog circuits such as analog-to-digital converters and power management integrated circuits. This article designs a hysteresis comparator that uses fewer components and achieves dual loop control of hysteresis generated by an externally added inverter circuit. The threshold of the hysteresis voltage can be flexibly designed, enabling the control terminal transmission tube M1 to use different voltage resistant devices to transmit corresponding effective comparison signals to the same phase terminal. The device used in this article can achieve an effective input voltage of up to 1.55V at the EN terminal up to 60V, while using PMOS as the differential input pair tube, with a wide common mode input range of 30mV-1.6V, and dynamic power consumption as low as 1.2 μW. The simulation of hysteresis voltage difference of 55m V was carried out using 0.18 μm BCD process, and the simulation results were consistent with the design expectations. © 2024 IEEE.

When Industry 4.0 technology is applied, it can increase resilience in production systems with interconnected machines and workers. As it is still evolving, research and implementation gaps due to issues such as costs, security, and a lack of use cases and domain expertise for enabling Digital Twins, need to be bridged. This paper proposes a framework connecting an Internet of Things platform with Digital Twin-compliant software based on ISO 23247. The simulation software provides cognitive support for the user who is immersed in the Digital Twin through Virtual Reality, and provides applications such as remote control and exploration of what-if scenarios. Connectivity with an Internet of Things platform facilitates real-time bi-directional communication, collaboration, monitoring, and assistance. A proof-of-concept use case based on an assembly line for a lab-scale drone factory was used for validation of the deployed Digital Twin based on ISO 23347. © 2024 IEEE.

Prediction on the time-varying behavior of tunnel segment gaskets under compression

The compression force is a critical indicator for assessing the waterproofing capability of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber gaskets, and the relaxation of EPDM gaskets under compression is a key factor contributing to water leakage in shield tunnels. In this study, detailed accelerated aging tests of gaskets with different precompression openings were conducted. Analytical method and simulation method for predicting the long-term performance of EPDM gaskets considering their different compression states were proposed. First, the compression curve of the gasket was divided into three stages to analyze the mechanism of compression force degradation in depth. Under the action of a compression force, the unrecoverable deformation caused by open holes shortened stage iii of the compression curve, which constituted the primary factor influencing gasket compression force relaxation. In addition, the Arrhenius equation was used to establish a conversion relationship between the accelerated aging test conditions and actual service time, and an analytical expression (AE) method for predicting the compression force degradation pattern of gaskets was proposed. Finally, a finite element (FE) method based on the relaxation constitutive model was proposed, enabling simulation of deteriorating tunnel segment gasket performance under complex compression states. Then, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed relaxation model were validated by comparing the compression force curves and deformation states obtained from experiments and simulations. Based on the time-varying relaxation constitutive parameters, the variation in the compression force of EPDM gaskets with different joint openings over time was simulated. The results show that the minimum compression force retention rates of gaskets after 100 years of service predicted by the AE method and FE method are 28.5 % and 30.6 %, respectively. Dialogue policy trains an agent to select dialogue actions frequently implemented via deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The model-based reinforcement methods built a world model to generate simulated data to alleviate the sample inefficiency. However, traditional world model methods merely consider one-step dialogues, leading to an inaccurate environmental simulation. Furthermore, different users may have different intention preferences, while most existing studies lack consideration of the intention-preferences causal relationship. This paper proposes a novel framework for dialogue policy learning named MCA, implemented through model-based reinforcement learning with automatically constructed causal chains. The MCA model utilizes an autoregressive Transformer to model dialogue trajectories, enabling a more accurate simulation of the environment. Additionally, it constructs a causal chains module that outputs latent preference distributions for intention-action pairs, thereby elucidating the relationship between user intentions and agent actions. The experimental results show that MCA can achieve state-of-the-art performances on three dialogue datasets over the compared dialogue agents, highlighting its effectiveness and robustness. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Online hostility, including cyberbullying, hate speech, and trolling, has become a pervasive issue on social media and affecting users' mental health. Our work explores the potential of gamification to mitigate the negative impacts of online hostility. Specifically, we investigate how gamification influences brain activity and user behavior in response to hostile interactions on social networks. Our proposed method uses EEG technology to develop personalized interventions that promote emotional regulation and reduce aggressive behavior in social media. We designed a theoretical framework that integrates EEG analysis with gamified interventions, enabling real-time monitoring and modification of users' emotional and cognitive responses to online hostility. This framework provides insights into the neurocognitive effects of online hostility and opens the way for innovative solutions to building healthier social network environments. A preliminary simulation was conducted as a proof-of-concept to model brain responses under conditions of baseline (regular interaction), exposure to online hostility, and gamified interventions. The simulation illustrates how gamification can regulate brain activity, promoting a calmer mental state and mitigating the adverse effects of online hostility. This paper details our theoretical framework, presents the simulation results, and discusses the implications. © 2024 IEEE.
