A growing body of discoveries in molecular signatures has revealed that volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the small molecules associated with an individual's odor and breath, can be monitored to reveal the identity and presence of a unique individual, as well their overall physiological status. Given the analysis requirements for differential VOC profiling via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, our group has developed a novel informatics platform, Metabolite Differentiation and Discovery Lab (MeDDL). In its current version, MeDDL is a comprehensive tool for time-series spectral registration and alignment, visualization, comparative analysis, and machine learning to facilitate the efficient analysis of multiple, large-scale biomarker discovery studies. The MeDDL toolset can therefore identify a large differential subset of registered peaks, where their corresponding intensities can be used as features for classification. This initial screening of peaks yields results sets that are typically too large for incorporation into a portable, electronic nose based system in addition to including VOCs that are not amenable to classification;consequently, it is also important to identify an optimal subset of these peaks to increase classification accuracy and to decrease the cost of the final system. MeDDL's learning tools include a classifier similar to a K-nearest neighbor classifier used in conjunction with a genetic algorithm (GA) that simultaneously optimizes the classifier and subset of features. The GA uses ROC curves to produce classifiers having maximal area under their ROC curve. Experimental results on over a dozen recognition problems show many examples of classifiers and feature sets that produce perfect ROC curves.

This paper describes the application of biologically-inspired algorithms and concepts to the design of wideband antenna arrays. In particular, we address two specific design problems. The first involves the design of a constrained-feed network for a Rotman-lens beamformer. We implemented two evolutionary optimization (EO) approaches, namely a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) and a competent genetic algorithm. We conducted simulations based on experimental data, which effectively demonstrate that the competent GA outperforms the SGA (i.e., finds a better design solution) as the objective function becomes less specific and more "general." The second design problem involves the implementation of polyomino-shaped subarrays for sidelobe suppression of large, wideband planar arrays. We use a modified screen-saver code to generate random polyomino filings. A separate code assigns array values to each element of the tiling (i.e., amplitude, phase, time delay, etc.) and computes the corresponding far-field radiation pattern. In order to conduct a statistical analysis of pattern characteristics vs. tiling geometry, we needed a way to measure the "similarity" between two arbitrary filings to ensure that our sampling of the tiling space was somewhat uniformly distributed We ultimately borrowed a concept from neural network theory, which we refer to as the "dot-product metric," to effectively categorize filings based on their degree of similarity.

computation intelligence is becoming an essential technology during the development of human society. There are many family members in computation intelligence. Many researchers have already studied the mathematical inherent rules of these biology-inspired algorithms to found methods to improve the capacity of the algorithms. In the family of computation intelligence, differential evolution (DE) algorithm shows performance optimization ability. In order to explore the reason why DE could have stable and robust quality. We analyzed the parallelism of the evolutionary process in the iterative process of DE algorithm based on graph theory. By the knowledge of graph theory, it will directly exhibit the essential reason of differential evolution in the algorithm.
