The Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) is a prominent NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem that arises in many real world applications. Solving the QAP to optimality is a very challenging task, and due to this, the QAP is mostly tackled by Stochastic Local Search (SLS) algorithms. Different SLS algorithms, however, achieve different levels of performance when tackling instances of different type, structure, or size. This holds true also for the QAP, where to date, no single SLS algorithm can be said to be the “best” approach for solving the QAP. Here we study the relationship between the relative performance of SLS algorithms for solving a class of real-life like Quadratic Assignment Problem instances and instance size. Experimental results show that population-based metaheuristic algorithms perform very well for solving this class of instances, compared to single point search approaches, and that their relative performance is relatively stable.

The only proven method for performing distributed-memory parallel rendering at large scales, tens of thousands of nodes, is a class of algorithms called sort last. The fundamental operation of sort-last parallel rendering is an image composite, which combines a collection of images generated independently on each node into a single blended image. Over the years numerous image compositing algorithms have been proposed as well as several enhancements and rendering modes to these core algorithms. However, the testing of these image compositing algorithms has been with an arbitrary set of enhancements, if any are applied at all. In this paper we take a leading production-quality image compositing framework, IceT, and use it as a testing frame work for the leading image compositing algorithms of today. As we scale IceT to ever increasing job sizes, we consider the image compositing systems holistically, incorporate numerous optimizations, and discover several improvements to the process never considered before. We conclude by demonstrating our solution on 64K cores of the Intrepid Blue Gene/P at Argonne National Laboratories.

The CIVA software platform developed by CEA-LIST offers various simulation and data processing modules dedicated to non-destructive testing (NDT). In particular, ultrasonic imaging and reconstruction tools are proposed, in the purpose of localizing echoes and identifying and sizing the detected defects. Because of the complexity of data processed, computation time is now a limitation for the optimal use of available information. In this article, we present performance results on parallelization of one computationally heavy algorithm on general purpose processors (GPP) and graphic processing units (GPU). GPU implementation makes an intensive use of atomic intrinsics. Compared to initial GPP implementation, optimized GPP implementation runs up to ×116 faster and GPU implementation up to ×631. This shows that, even with irregular workloads, combining software optimization and hardware improvements, GPU give high performance.

With the advance of research, design and operation of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) which are designed to produce a variety of different part types with high machine utilization, short lead times and little work-in-progress inventory, new requirements like high modeling efficiency, high model validity and credibility and effectiveness and correct analysis of results are defined. Simulation is an efficient tool to verify design concepts, to select machinery, to evaluate alternative configurations and to test system control strategies of an FMS, etc. This paper presents a useful tool for simulating the behavior of random FMSs. This simulator is used for real time alternative routing selection based on a group of metaheuristics principles which include in particular simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), taboo search (TS), ant colony algorithms (ACO), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and electromagnetism like method (EM). This software is also can used for performance and sensitivity analysis of theses techniques jugged by the production rate, machines and material handling utilization rate, the cycle time and the work in process.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), surrounded by high complexity, nonlinear constraint and large amount of coupling design parameters, provides fairly higher fuel economy with lower emissions than conventional vehicles. It is significant to optimize HEV's parameters to enhance its performance. Considering the disadvantage of the methods transforming multi-objective functions into a single objective evaluation function, this paper reports a methodological approach for multi-objective optimization of parallel hybrid vehicle. Firstly, a model of parallel hybrid electric vehicle for optimal simulation is established. Secondly, based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms II, a methodological approach for the simultaneous optimization of HEV parameters to minimize the fuel consumption and emissions was proposed, which adopts ADVISOR to simulate. Taking Insight as a case, the simulation results show that this approach can obtain a set of Pareto-optimal solutions with better performance.

To solve the fire evacuation problem, which is special and complex, we established a fire evacuation system and combined it with the shortest path algorithm. By building this system, which was designed to finish the function of the emergency evacuation and daily monitoring, the blindness, retard, uncertainty can be eliminated efficiently. Foremost, the idea of how to use the shortest path algorithm in calculating the evacuation path has been proposed in this paper. We compared the performances of the shortest path algorithms, and found that the Dijkstra algorithm is more suitable for this system. Considering the complexity of the fire, we combined the Dijkstra algorithm and some vital elements together, which effectively solved the problem of searching safe and fast evacuation paths in this system. Finally, we used the software platform connecting with the hardware device to show the real procession of evacuation paths, and the high-performance of this modified algorithm solved the fire evacuation problem indeed.

In this paper the synthesis of linear array geometry with minimum side lobe level using a new class of Particle Swarm optimization technique namely Improved Particle Swarm optimization (IPSO) is described. The IPSO algorithm is a newly proposed, high-performance evolutionary algorithm capable of solving general N-dimensional, linear and nonlinear optimization problems. Compared to other evolutionary methods such as genetic algorithms and simulated annealing, the IPSO algorithm is much easier to understand and implement and requires the least of mathematical pre-processing. The array geometry synthesis is first formulated as an optimization problem with the goal of side lobe level (SLL) suppression, and then solved by the IPSO algorithm for the optimum element locations and current excitations. Five design examples are presented that illustrate the use of the IPSO algorithm, and the optimization goal in each example is easily achieved.

The large widespread of mobile devices and the increasing demand for high performance has made energy an important constraint in computer's technology. In this paper, we propose a simple software methodology that can be adapted by researchers to estimate the energy cost of kernels. Kernels are operations that can be implemented in hardware and are executed frequently in algorithms. This energy estimation helps in exploiting opportunities for energy optimizations in various algorithms. As a case study, we apply our methodology on back propagation (BP) algorithm and we estimate the energy cost of its kernels on two different architectures using: a) Simulation tools for the RISC architecture b) Physical measurement of the current and voltage using special boards for the CISC architecture. Our experiments show that the produced energy costs using our method have 5.14% error with respect to the costs of these kernels in real codes, which proves the high accuracy of our methodology. The results also show that different architectures exhibit different energy consumption when executing the same kernel which proves that alternative kernel implementations have impact on energy saving. Based on the estimated energy costs of the kernels, we further propose an energy optimization technique by using lookup tables (LUT). The proposed technique targets the exponential kernel because of its high energy consumption and replaces it with a LUT. The experimental results show a significant reduction of 99.97% in the energy consumed by the exponential kernel.

This paper considers the design of software for embedded control of robotic marionettes using choreography to specify the marionette motion. Marionettes are actuated by strings, so the mechanical description of the marionettes either creates a multi-scale or degenerate system--making simulation of the constrained dynamics challenging. Moreover, the marionettes have 40-50 degrees of freedom with closed kinematic chains. Choreography requires motion primitives typically originating from human motion that one wants the marionette to imitate, resulting in a high dimensional nonlinear optimal control problem that needs to be solved for each primitive. Once one has motion primitives to use, they must be pieced together in a way that preserves stability, resulting in an optimal timing control problem. These three computational components lead to software requirements for the embedded system, including efficient computation of the 1) discrete time dynamics that preserve the constraints and other integrals of motion, 2) nonlinear optimal control policies (including optimal control of LTV systems), and 3) optimal timing of choreography. All of these need to take fast convergence into account. We show how to provide all these capabilities in a single framework. Moreover, in order to meet these requirements new results on projection operators on finite dimensional function spaces are needed--both of which are critical to ensuring acceptable convergence of the algorithms. We conclude with our current results and application of these ideas to other systems.
