In this paper we propose a practical and efficient method for finding the globally optimal solution to the problem of camera pose estimation for calibrated cameras. While traditional methods may get trapped in local minima, due to the non-convexity of the problem, we have developed an approach that guarantees global optimality. The scheme is based on ideas from global optimization theory, in particular, convex under-estimators in combination with branch and bound. We provide a provably optimal algorithm and demonstrate good performance on both synthetic and real data

In the recent past, there has been an increase in the demand for vision-based embedded systems. These applications have high computational requirements and therefore severely strain the limited resources available in most embedded systems. With today's high-performance digital signal processors (DSPs) offering additional features to address multi-media needs, it is necessary to understand and exploit these features to realize a real-time vision-based application. Algorithm level optimizations also contribute to reduction in processing power and memory requirements. Hence, software redesign is an important process for optimizing the software. In this paper, we emphasize the need for an in-depth knowledge of the architecture for optimal, cost-effective real-time performance. We also explain the impact of various optimization techniques on the execution time and memory consumption of a simple block-based algorithm and a complex real-world stationary vehicle detection algorithm

Multimodal optimization algorithms are being adapted to deal with dynamic optimization, mainly due to their ability to provide a faster reaction to unexpected changes in the optimization surface. The faster reaction may be associated with the existence of two important attributes in population-based algorithms devoted to multimodal optimization: simultaneous maintenance of multiple local optima in the population; and self-regulation of the population size along the search. The optimization surface may be subject to variations motivated by one of two main reasons: modification of the objectives to be fulfilled and change in parameters of the problem. An immune-inspired algorithm specially designed to deal with combinatorial optimization is applied here to solve time-varying TSP instances, with the cost of going from one city to the other being a function of time. The proposal presents favorable results when compared to the results produced by a high-performance ant colony optimization algorithm of the literature.

This paper describes a multi-objective parameter-less genetic algorithm (moPGA), which combines several recent developments including efficient non-dominated sorting, linkage learning, isin-Dominance, building-block mutation and convergence detection. Additionally, a novel method of clustering in the objective space using an isin-Pareto Set is introduced. Comparisons with well-known multi-objective GAs on scalable benchmark problems indicate that the algorithm scales well with problem size in terms of number of function evaluations and quality of solutions found. moPGA was built for easy usage and hence, in addition to the problem function and encoding, there are only two required user defined parameters; (1) the maximum running time or generations and (2) the precision of the desired solutions (isin).

An optimal variable structure control (VSC) based on a coordination genetic algorithm has been developed. Steady-state error and control switching frequency are used to constitute the system performance indexes in the coordination optimization, while the tuning rate of boundary layer width (BLW) is employed as the optimization parameter. Then based on the mathematical relationship between BLW tuning law and steady state error, an optimized BLW tuning rate is added to the nonlinear control term of VSC. Simulation experiment results applied to the main steam pressure control (MSPC) of power plant show the comprehensive superiority of dynamical and static state performance by using the proposed controller over that of by using an optimized PID control. The proposed VSC system has better robustness against large parameter variations and disturbances. This succeeds in coordinately considering both chattering reduction and high-precision control in VSC

This paper proposes a reconfigurable platform for software/hardware co-design of base band pre-processing module of wideband wireless transceivers. The platform uses the Digital Signal Processors (DSP) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to run advanced digital signal processing algorithms intended for the performance optimization of the transceiver radiofrequency front-end. Having the possibility to generate a variety of modulation techniques at high sampling rates and wide bandwidth up to 60MHz, the proposed platform is suitable for implementing innovative software defined radio transceivers' base band modules including digital pre-processing algorithms to boost the transceivers performances. An implementation and validation approach is also proposed. Taking advantage from the communication protocol between the DSP and the FPGA, the validation is done using the DSP it self for acquiring digital data at the output of each hardware function. A comparison of the emulation results to the high-level simulation ones is used to validate the hardware implementation and debug eventual bugs.

Textual annotations are important elements in all but the simplest visual interfaces. In order to integrate textual annotations smoothly into the dynamic graphical content of interactive information systems, fast yet high-quality label layout algorithms are required. With the ongoing pervasion of mobile applications these requirements are shifted from workstations to comparatively low-performance mobile devices. Fortunately, ubiquitous network access is also on the advance, so that mobile applications can employ remote layout services on external workstations. This paper presents two novel label layout algorithms for relevance-driven dynamic visualizations in interactive information systems. They are employed to generate adaptive visualizations in a mobile maintenance support scenario

The problem of reconstruction of high-resolution spectra on the basis of low-resolution data, provided by spectrophotometers, is addressed. It is shown that the performance of the algorithms for spectrum reconstruction with an in-built positivity constraint deteriorates for the data containing a considerable baseline (background). A new method for overcoming that limitation is proposed. It consists in subtraction of a rough estimate of the baseline (called pseudo-baseline) from the data, reconstruction of spectrum on the basis of the data modified in this way, and restoration of the pseudo-baseline in the final result of spectrum reconstruction. The proposed amelioration is illustrated by means of an algorithm of spectrum reconstruction, based on the Jansson method of deconvolution

The pervasive application of digital computer in control and optimization techniques forces us to consider the constraint of limited memory space when dealing with large scale practical systems. As an example, we consider the famous Witsenhausen counterexample with the new constraint of limited memory space in this paper. The main difficulty is how to sample strategies that can be stored in the given memory space efficiently. The concept of Kolmogorov complexity measures the minimal memory space to store a strategy (i.e., simple strategies), but is incomputable. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a method based on ordered binary decision diagram to sample only simple strategies. Besides the high sampling efficiency which is demonstrated by numerical testing, the proposed sampling method can be easily combined with optimization algorithms and performance evaluation techniques. As an example, we show how to combine ordinal optimization, numerical integration, and the proposed sampling method to solve the Witsenhausen problem with the constraint of limited memory space. We hope this work can shed some insights to computer-based optimization problems with memory space constraint in a more general situation

A navel nonlinear face recognition method named GPPface is proposed in this paper. GPPface is based on nonlinear dimensionality reduction algorithm, Geodesic Preserving Projection (GPP). As face images are regarded to be embedded in a nonlinear space, GPP is presented to nonlinearty map high-dimensional face images to low-dimensional feature space. GPP overcomes the weaknesses of traditional linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction algorithms, well preserves the intrinsic structure of the manifold and can fast and efficiently map new sample point to feature space. To recover space structure of face images and tackle small sample size problem, 3D morphable model is developedto derive multiple images of a person from a single image. Experimental results on ORL and PIE face databases show that our method makes impressive performance improvement compared with conventional face recognition methods.
