The studies on program comprehension have seen developments over the years from the cognitive science perspective. As eye-tracking technology has proven to analyze visual attention and gaze-performance, it has then been largely used in the program comprehension studies to help understand the underlying cognitive processes among the participants. In this research work, we conducted an experiment using common fundamental programming questions on 66 undergraduate computer science students to study the gaze-behavior among the high and low-performing participants on programming comprehension. We aim to better understand the differences in the time taken by the individuals in terms of their performance with existing prior knowledge and use machine learning to predict their expertise. Findings from this study suggest that mental schemas do play a role as the high performers demonstrated less time taken to attempt the questions than the low performers and machine learning algorithms were able to successfully predict their expertise. The conclusions drawn are supported by eye-tracking metrics across individual- and group-levels.

The article is devoted to the practical energy saving at modernization of street lighting in small towns. The object of the research is street lighting. The subject of the research is replacing the lamp type and power. The paper deals with the current situation of street lighting on the basis of the existing RKU (mercury console street) type with DRL (arc mercury) 250W lamps. The modern software products allowed to hold computer modeling of street lighting and calculation of standardized parameters for the option of using ZhKU (sodium console) lighting with DNat (high-pressure sodium) 150W lamps. There has been made a lighting calculation of a road section with the existing RKU-250 lamps and a comparative lighting calculation with ZhKU-150 lamps. There is a graphic performance of 2D and 3D lighting models of the test road section. The normative GOST value of the average luminance is demonstrated. There has been made a calculation of basic lighting parameters (average brightness, average luminance, maximum luminance, minimum luminance). There is information about financial cost of street lighting modernization. There has been calculated the annual economic impact of replacing DRL 250W lamps with DNat 150W lamps. There has been made a calculation of the payback period of the project. The energy-saving effect has been received. The further introduction of replacement of DRL 250W lamps with DNat 150W lamps has been recommended. © 2019 IEEE.

Many small satellites are designed to utilize cutting edge technology with the goal of rapidly advancing space based capabilities. As a result, many components take advantage of developments from the miniaturization of smartphone technology. Within the past 2 years, the UGA Small Satellite Research Laboratory has extended this concept into embedded GPUs for high-performance processing in LEO. Here we showcase advances in our research of high-performance space-based computation by integrating a traditional flight computer with existing miniaturized GPU/SoC systems. Such a system paves the way for many of NASA's goals that require space based AI, neural networks, computer vision, and high performance computing. Our system fits a standard CubeSat PC/104+ form factor, and implements many standard protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and RS422. The system also has several GPIO pins, 2 USB-C ports, a micro USB port for flashing, an Ethernet port, and a micro SD card slot for development. Additionally, the system is designed to be modular, so that GPU accelerated SoCs can be stacked to form a distributed system. For our primary computer, which handles I/O and initializes processes on the SoC, we choose to use the radiation tolerant Smart Fusion 2 SoC with an ARM Cortex-M3 processor and a FPGA. In addition to this primary computer, we use the Nvidia Tegra X2/X2i as the GPU/SoC workhorse. The primary computer and the TX2i are designed to share memory space with peripherals mounted onto the board, so that no significant file transfer is required between the subsystems. Additionally, Nvidia's Pascal architecture enables GPU-CPU or GPU-GPU communication without PCIe, enabling dense interconnected networks for monitoring and computation. To address thermal concerns, we cap the TX2i's power draw at 7.5Watts, provide recommendations for thermal interface materials, and ensure that the primary computer only enables the GPU/SoC when parallel computation is specifically requested. Adaptive Sinusoidal interference cancellation (ASIC) based on recursive least square (RLS) algorithm is proposed. RLS algorithm allows us to use a recursion instead of inversion of the autocorrelation matrix to evaluate the optimum weights. The main advantage of RLS algorithm is that it exhibits extremely high rate of convergence. computer simulations are performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Virtual Grid Engine: a simulated grid engine environment for large-scale supercomputers

Background Supercomputers have become indispensable infrastructures in science and industries. In particular, most state-of-the-art scientific results utilize massively parallel supercomputers ranked in TOP500. However, their use is still limited in the bioinformatics field due to the fundamental fact that the asynchronous parallel processing service of Grid Engine is not provided on them. To encourage the use of massively parallel supercomputers in bioinformatics, we developed middleware called Virtual Grid Engine, which enables software pipelines to automatically perform their tasks as MPI programs. Result We conducted basic tests to check the time required to assign jobs to workers by VGE. The results showed that the overhead of the employed algorithm was 246 microseconds and our software can manage thousands of jobs smoothly on the K computer. We also tried a practical test in the bioinformatics field. This test included two tasks, the split and BWA alignment of input FASTQ data. 25,055 nodes (2,000,440 cores) were used for this calculation and accomplished it in three hours. Conclusion We considered that there were four important requirements for this kind of software, non-privilege server program, multiple job handling, dependency control, and usability. We carefully designed and checked all requirements. And this software fulfilled all the requirements and achieved good performance in a large scale analysis.

An augmented cache replacement policy RTC_RRIP for last level cache L3 in state of art multi-core processors

Multi-core processor with hierarchical multilevel cache helps to reduce memory access time and also lower down the speed gap between primary memory and processor. Many replacement policy has been designed to improve the last level cache and an effective replacement policy helps to optimize the usage of last level cache with respect to different high level intensive workload in a multi-core computer system. In this manuscript we have designed an augmented replacement strategy Recency timer count Re-Reference Interval Prediction (RTC_RRIP). The RTC_RRIP policy uses recency time prefilter which accelerates the re-reference interval prediction accuracy to minimize number of cache misses and miss penalty. We perform analysis using GEM 5 simulator and uses some traces from CPU2017 benchmarks application program to compare RTC_RRIP with existing LRU and hawkeye policy. We reveal that RTC_RRIP is showing better performance over LRU and Hawkeye in terms of hit rate and execution time.

Removing rain streaks from a single image has been drawing considerable attention as rain streaks can severely degrade the image quality and affect the performance of existing outdoor vision tasks. While recent CNN-based derainers have reported promising performances, deraining remains an open problem for two reasons. First, existing synthesized rain datasets have only limited realism, in terms of modeling real rain characteristics such as rain shape, direction and intensity. Second, there are no public benchmarks for quantitative comparisons on real rain images, which makes the current evaluation less objective. The core challenge is that real world rain/clean image pairs cannot be captured at the same time. In this paper, we address the single image rain removal problem in two ways. First, we propose a semi-automatic method that incorporates temporal priors and human supervision to generate a high-quality clean image from each input sequence of real rain images. Using this method, we construct a large-scale dataset of similar to 29.5K rain/rain-free image pairs that covers a wide range of natural rain scenes. Second, to better cover the stochastic distribution of real rain streaks, we propose a novel SPatial Attentive Network (SPANet) to remove rain streaks in a local-to-global manner. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our network performs favorably against the state-of-the-art deraining methods.

Unlike IP router's stateless forwarding model, a content router owns a sophisticated data plane, consisting of a three-stage pipeline, namely, FIB, PIT, CS. Generally, a pipeline runs only as fast as its slowest stage. Compared with PIT and FIB, CS design is more challenging because it has more data to read/write, may have more entries in its table to store and lookup, and needs to organize content objects to sustain frequent cache replacement. To address CS's performance issue, we propose a novel mechanism called "NB-Cache" from a network-wide point of view rather than a single router's. In NB-Cache, when packets arrive at a router whose CS is fully loaded, instead of being blocked and waiting for the CS, these packets are forwarded to the next-hop router, whose CS may not be fully loaded. This approach essentially utilizes Content Stores of all the routers along the forwarding path in parallel rather than checking each CS sequentially. Preliminary evaluation shows significant data plane performance improvement as 130% increase in throughput.
