To avoid data loss, data centers adopt disk failure prediction (DFP) technology to raise warnings ahead of actual disk failures, and process the warnings in the order they are raised, i.e., a first-in-first-out (FIFO) warning order. The FIFO-guided warning order can process warnings timely when disk failures are rare in data centers. With the growing scale of data centers, the increasing number of disk failures leads to a complex situation that multiple warnings are raised simultaneously, where the FIFO-guided warning order neither processes warnings timely, nor manages warnings properly due to lack of the priority of warnings. Thus, a real-time and finer-grained priority guidance for warning order management is an urgent need. To this end, we turn our attention to the failures since each warning corresponds to a fail event. The key insight is that the interdependence of failures, i.e., the order failure occurred, indicates the order of warning processing. With an accurate failure order, data centers can decrease the probability of data loss and the downtime of latency-sensitive applications by processing urgent warnings in advance. In this paper, we predict the failure order with a LambdaMART model, which is a state-of-the-art ranking algorithm in information retrieval. To avoid overly concerning on the correctness of high-rank warnings in information retrieval, we design a symmetric metric to evaluate the prediction evaluation of failure order. Experiment on a public dataset, provided by the Backblaze company, shows that our model outperforms the FIFO order and the order from previous DFP models. © 2019 IEEE.

In the paper, a hybrid of finite element boundary integral (FEBI) method and physical optics (PO) is discussed for analyzing scattering problems of inhomogeneous structures with electrically large-scale platform. The hybrid of these two methods is realized by an iterative process. The hybrid method can efficiently reduce the number of unknowns and the computational complexity while preserving acceptable accuracy. Some numerical results are displayed to illuminate the efficiency of the method. © 2019 IEEE.

Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based Brain-computer interface (BCI) is one of the non-invasive BCI systems that has received great attention over the years. It requires shorter training and provides relatively higher information transfer rate. Various approaches have been developed to recognize SSVEP. One popular approach is based on canonical correlation analysis (CCA). The standard CCA uses artificial reference templates of pure sine and cosine signals with frequencies corresponding to the frequencies of the visual stimuli. These reference templates may not optimally reflect the natural SSVEP features hidden in the recorded EEG signal. Thus, they may not produce high performance. This paper introduced a new approach called ITCCA (Individual Template Canonical Correlation Analysis). ITCCA optimized the reference signal by incorporating features of the subject's EEG data into the artificial reference template. The performance of this approach was compared with that of the standard CCA. The experiment showed that ITCCA obtained better results than the standard CCA method.

OpenMP allows developers to harness the power of shared memory multiprocessing in C and C++ applications, but the performance gained with OpenMP is highly sensitive to the underlying hardware, making performance portability across different hardware architectures fragile. For example, in mapping a parallel for loop to hardware, OpenMP 4 offers commands for exploiting vector instructions (simd directives) and automatic GPU offloading (target directives), as well as schedule directives for CPU load balancing. These benefits come with a cost. A developer has to be well aware of the architecture details, and the application, and must iteratively tune to determine the best combination of pragma directives delivering higher performance for the given target architecture. Hence in this paper we introduce Rigel, a framework that automates these decisions to arrive at optimized OpenMP annotated code. Given a code segment with inherent parallelism, our framework uses separate machine learning classification models to predict the anticipated benefit of each optimization. Both Vector Classification and GPU Offloading Classification models perform with average accuracies of 83%. Succeeding the classification process, code segments are optimized accordingly. Our results show that GPU offloading optimization lead to an average speedup of 8x over default non-optimized CPU parallel execution (pragma omp parallel for) and average Vector optimization speedup is 6x compared to LLVM Clang 4.0 auto-vectorization. Furthermore Scheduling mechanism selection process results in overall accuracy of 90%. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper demonstrates, for the first time, a new underwater communication scheme based on the Direct Modulation (DM) of an array of piezoelectric Micro-Machined Ultrasonic Transducers (MUT). The use of this new modulation scheme permits to achieve more efficient data transmission compared to what could be attained through conventional continuous waves-based (CW) driving approaches. In addition, as the received information can be extracted without the employment of mixers or amplifiers, it enables lower power consumption and low noise-figures. In this work, we report on the performance of the first dMUT-prototype. This system, which relies on a Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) to periodically connect and disconnect an array of pMUTs to a DC-biased filter (Fig. 1), exhibits power consumption of 140mW and enables transmitted energy-per-bit of 0.7 mu J. Such a value is two orders-of-magnitude more efficient than what attained through conventional communication approaches for underwater networks [1]-[3].

This paper proposes an effective heterogeneous image matching algorithm by multiple cues integration. Given two kinds of heterogeneous images, i.e., infrared (IR) and visible images, we calculate the negative image of the IR image at first. Then, to enhance the matching performance, both the IR image and its negative image will be matched with the visible image respectively. Subsequently, for each image in the image groups, multiple cues, called DOG-SIFT, H-SC, and LPQ are proposed to extract and describe the feature points. Based on these points, the nearest neighbor ratio method is used for initial matching, and then the random sample consensus algorithm is adopted to eliminate the false matching point pairs. At last, by fusing the matching results of different image groups, we can get the final result. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve good performance for heterogeneous image matching. © 2019 IEEE.

Given two collections of objects, metric similarity join finds all similar pairs of objects according to a particular distance function in metric space. There is an increasing demand to provide a scalable similarity join algorithm which can support efficient query and analytical services in the era of Big Data. In this paper, we propose SMS-Join, a parallel framework to support similarity join in metric space based on the MapReduce paradigm. The overall workflow of SMS-Join is that it first finds some records as pivots in the preprocessing phase and then splits the data into partitions based on them with a map job. Finally the join results are obtained via a reduce job. To ensure load balancing between the partitions, we devise a light-weighted sampling technique to obtain high quality samples while maintaining the high performance. To reduce the partition cost, we develop an iterative partition strategy in the map phase. We implement our framework upon Apache Spark platform and conduct extensive experiments on four real world datasets. The results show that our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Blockchain, the concept from Bitcoin created by Satoshi Nakamoto, has the potential to decentralise traditionally centralised systems. Blockchain is a distributed ledger for recording information, stored by many nodes without a central organization through distributed systems and cryptography. The consensus algorithm is a protocol that guarantees the consistency of all data in a blockchain system. It is a key for building a blockchain system and an important part that affects the performance of the blockchain system. In this paper, we firstly compare the usage scenarios of different consensus algorithms, their advantages and disadvantages. After that, we present a new consensus algorithm in permissioned blockchain based on consistent hashing. For blockchain system construction, we propose a new design of the hash ring. The pseudo-randomness of the hash operation is used to ensure the randomness of the electoral leadership node in the blockchain system. It avoids the security risk of the fixed leadership node model. Our algorithm is applicable to blockchain systems containing Byzantine nodes and has a high throughput, low delay and many other advantages. Its communication complexity is O(n), significantly better than that of the practical Byzantine fault tolerance algorithm whose communication complexity is O(n2). © 2019 IEEE.

Countries around the world are increasingly interested in resource development in the Arctic due to global warming. Recently, Arctic coastal states (Russia, USA, Canada, etc.) are pursuing infrastructure construction projects for resource development in the Arctic region. Because the offshore structures in the Arctic are exposed to the sea ice, in order to ensure the safety of the structures, the calculation of the ice resistance is of paramount importance for offshore structures. In general, studies on the ice resistance have been carried out for the breaking and clearing performance of icebreakers. However, in the case of fpu (floating production unit) for resource development in the Arctic region, it is necessary to estimate the ice resistance in the oblique condition to ensure safety. Thus, despite estimation of the ice resistance in the oblique condition is significant, there has not been enough research until recently. In this paper, we suggest algorithms for estimating the ice resistance in the oblique condition. For the estimation process, an in-house code software program is used and an ice resistance estimation module is implemented for the oblique condition using empirical formula. This paper shows results of the ice resistance which was calculated in the oblique condition, and the change of the ice resistance is shown according to various oblique angles in pack ice. In addition, the results are compared to the model test result of a fpu in pack ice of 80% concentration.
