Building an infrastructure for high-performance computing is a complex and tedious task. The hardware could not be purchased at one time but in several batches of purchased with many different specifications. It has to be started at one time with a small scale but big enough to be used and shown to be useful for the user. By the time new hardware is added. However, the purchased hardware should be optimally utilized especially to provide services for users who have various needs for their purposes. It is the task for high-performance computing architect and system administrator to design the system which is useful for many different users and various purposes and services by using all available hardware. Our high-performance infrastructure is built based on the idea to manage multi-services for multi-users in a single cluster environment with heterogeneous hardware specifications. It is implemented and currently serves many services for many users.

The explosive growth of massive data generation from Internet of Things in industrial, agricultural and scientific communities has led to a rapid increase in cloud data centers for data analytics. The ubiquitous and pervasive demand for near-data processing urges the edge computing paradigm in recent years. Edge computing is promising for less network backbone bandwidth usage and thus less data center side processing, as well as enhanced service responsiveness and data privacy protection. Computation offloading plays a crucial role in network packets transmission and system responsiveness through dynamic task partitioning between cloud data centers and edge servers and edge devices. In this paper a thorough literature review is conduct to reveal the state-of-the-art of computation offloading in edge computing. Various aspects of computation offloading, including energy consumption minimization, Quality of Services (QoS), and Quality of Experiences (QoE) are surveyed. Resource scheduling approaches, gaming and tradeoffing among system performance and system overheads for offloading decision making are also reviewed. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2019.

Today's cloud storage infrastructures typically provide two distinct types of services for hosting files: object storage like Amazon S3 and filesystem storage like Amazon EFS. The former supports simple, flat object operations with a low unit storage price, while the latter supports complex, hierarchical filesystem operations with a high unit storage price. In practice, however, a cloud storage user often desires the advantages of both - efficient filesystem operations with a low unit storage price. An intuitive approach to achieving this goal is to combine the two types of services, e.g., by hosting large files in S3 and small files together with directory structures in EFS. Unfortunately, our benchmark experiments indicate that the clients' download performance for large files becomes a severe system bottleneck. In this paper, we attempt to address the bottleneck with little overhead by carefully tweaking the usages of S3 and EFS. This attempt is enabled by two key observations. First, since S3 and EFS have the same unit network-traffic price and the data transfer between S3 and EFS is free of charge, we can employ EFS as a relay for the clients' quickly downloading large files. Second, noticing that significant similarity exists between the files hosted at the cloud and its users, in most times we can convert large-size file downloads into small-size file synchronizations (through delta encoding and data compression). Guided by the observations, we design and implement an open-source system called HyCloud. It automatically invokes the data APIs of S3 and EFS on behalf of users, and handles the data transfer among S3, EFS and the clients. Real-world evaluations demonstrate that the unit storage price of HyCloud is close to that of S3, and the filesystem operations are executed as quickly as in EFS in most times (sometimes even more quickly than in EFS). © 2019 IEEE.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are playing an increasingly important role in several research areas. The most frequently used potentials in MD simulations are pair-wise potentials. Due to the memory wall, computing pair-wise potentials on many-core processors are usually memory bounded. In this paper, we take the SW26010 processor as an exemplary platform to explore the possibility to break the memory bottleneck by improving data reusage via cell-list-based methods. We use cell-lists instead of neighbor-lists in the potential computation, and apply a number of novel optimization methods. Theses methods include: an adaptive replica arrangement strategy, a parameter profile data structure, and a particle-cell cutoff checking filter. An incremental cell-list building method is also realized to accelerate the construction of cell-lists. Furthermore, we have established an open source standalone framework, ESMD, featuring the techniques above. Experiments show that ESMD is 50~170% faster than previous ports on a single node, and can scale to 1,024 nodes with a weak scalibility of 95%.

The motor imagery (MI) based on electroencephalogram (EEG) via non-invasive Brain computer Interface (BCI) is a promising interactive method to provide effective communication between the disabled and rehabilitation robotic device. Interactive efficiency of MI-based BCI largely relies on the performance of subject's motor imagery. In this work, we proposed a simple and effective paradigm based on visual and haptic modalities for a high-quality initialized and calibrated MI-BCI model. Five healthy male subjects participated in motor imagery experiments with two paradigms. The proposed paradigm utilized mixed cues based on the visual and haptic modalities where the haptic cues were provided by the mini vibration motors, and a traditional paradigm utilized the ordinary arrow visual cues. The analysis of the topographic maps was conducted to illustrate the differences of the EEG in both paradigms. The average classification accuracy of motor imagery in the proposed paradigm improved about 14% compared to the traditional paradigm. Furthermore, a subject completed the qualitative verification experiment of the trained model on a rehabilitation lower-limb exoskeleton which proved the feasibility of the proposed paradigm. © 2019 IEEE.

The goal of anomaly detection is to identify examples that deviate from normal or expected behavior. We tackle this problem for images. We consider a two-phase approach. First, using normal examples, a convolutional autoencoder (CAE) is trained to extract a low-dimensional representation of the images. Here, we propose a novel architectural choice when designing the CAE, an Inception-like CAE. It combines convolutional filters of different kernel sizes and it uses a Global Average Pooling (GAP) operation to extract the representations from the CAE's bottleneck layer. Second, we employ a distanced-based anomaly detector in the low-dimensional space of the learned representation for the images. However, instead of computing the exact distance, we compute an approximate distance using product quantization. This alleviates the high memory and prediction time costs of distance-based anomaly detectors. We compare our proposed approach to a number of baselines and state-of-the-art methods on four image datasets, and we find that our approach resulted in improved predictive performance.

The general-purpose fluid simulation software FrontFlow/blue (FFB) is based on the finite element method (FEM). It was designed to accept extremely large-scale simulations and is an important application in the manufacturing field in Japan. Moreover, since this application is significant in both the manufacturing field and the development of the post-K supercomputer, it is employed as an important application for the new post-K supercomputer that is under development. The K computer is still the important infrastructure in Japan. And there are some supercomputers having the same architecture to the K computer. Therefore we continue to improve the performance of the FFB on the K computer. On significant subroutines, several improvement techniques, store order based loop modi fi cation decreasing total load and store operations, unrolled loop rerolling to employ SIMD load instruction, adjusting number of arrays in loop, using sector cache function, and so on, were employed. As a result, an improvement of 160% was obtained on a single CPU performance. This paper shows and discusses the detail of these improvements.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be utilized as aerial base stations to provide communication service for remote mobile users due to their high mobility and flexible deployment. However, the line-of-sight (LoS) wireless links are vulnerable to be intercepted by the eavesdropper (Eve), which presents a major challenge for UAV-aided communications. In this paper, we propose a latency-minimized transmission scheme for satisfying legitimate users' (LUs') content requests securely against Eve. By leveraging physical-layer security (PLS) techniques, we formulate a transmission latency minimization problem by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and user association. The resulting problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP), which is known to be NP hard. Furthermore, the dimension of optimization variables is indeterminate, which again makes our problem very challenging. To efficiently address this, we utilize bisection to search for the minimum transmission delay and introduce a variational penalty method to address the associated subproblem via an inexact block coordinate descent approach. Moreover, we present a characterization for the optimal solution. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed design.

Spectral-based fault localization is a statistical technique that aims at helping software developers to find programming faults quickly. In this technique fault locations are found by analyzing abstractions of program traces to provide a ranked list of most probable faulty components (e.g., program statement). Although the semantic structure of code is not considered in Spectral-based fault localization methods, they are widely known as high-performance and state-of-the-art methods. Many studies have been conducted in this area that have led to the creation of various methods, with different accuracy and efficiency. Nevertheless, the relative performance of these methods are neither examined nor discussed in the literature. In this paper, we introduce an empirical framework for implementation of SBFL methods in large-scale real bug java programs. Implementation results are reported using evaluation metrics to provide a clear comparison of the performance of the most effective methods.

UT transform is the core step of unscented kalman filter (UKF) algorithm. The Sigma sampling type of UT transform has great influence on the computational complexity, state estimation accuracy and computational efficiency of UKF-based terrain matching algorithm. In order to obtain the high precision terrain matching method which is suitable for engineering application, the Comparative analysis of three kinds of UKF-based terrain matching algorithms was carried out in this paper. Firstly, the UKF-based underwater terrain matching model was given. Secondly, the principle and the performance characteristics of scaled sampling method, Cubature sampling method, Gauss- Hermite sampling methods were analyzed. The filtering precision factors of symmetric unscented Kalman filter(SUKF), Cubature unscented Kalman filter(CKF), Gauss-Hermite Kalman Filter(GHKF) was studied from the algorithm principle, Thirdly, The computer simulation was performed using univariate nonstationary growth model(UNGM) to test the previous analysis conclusions. Finally underwater terrain matching simulation model was established, and the comparative analysis of matching acuraccy was carried out based on SITAN, SUKF, CKF and GHKF, the matching effect of underwater terrain matching algorithm is obtained. The simulation results show that the UKF algorithm based on symmetric sampling strategy has better filtering precision and less computational complexity which is suitable for the filtering core of underwater terrain matching algorithm. © 2019 Association for Computing Machinery.
