As a new evolution optimization, artificial fish school algorithm has the features of high convergence speed and good performance on solving combinatorial optimization. To improve the optimization performance of the artificial fish school algorithm, a simplified artificial fish school algorithm is proposed. In the forage process, artificial fish can directly move to the optimal position in its vision distance to fasten the search speed. In the clustering behaviors, the center of the neighbor domain can be replaced by the center of the whole fish school. In the clustering process, the optimal position is replaced by optimal position of the fish school. Therefore, the computing process can proceed only by the distance of the center and optimal position of the fish school. The distance of the neighbor distance and current fish school, the utmost value of the neighbor and the distance of optimal artificial fish and all the fish neighbor domain can be simplified to shorten the running time. Simulation results show that the SAFSA has good performance on convergence speed, running time and optimization ability to high dimension function.

Over the past few years, the demand for electrical energy has been increasing rapidly. Consequently, to cater the load requirements, the number of substations being built has been continuously rising. For several technical and safety reasons, electrical power installations must be grounded and the uninterrupted flow of fault current to the earth can be achieved by maintaining the grounding system resistance as low as possible. For a substation with high grounding system resistance, a hazardous situation can be generated in the vicinity of the substation depending upon the level of the potential difference that exists between grounded structures and various points on earth during abnormal or fault conditions. Two of the most critical parameters that influence the design of the grounding system at an electrical substation are the soil resistivity and the area available for laying the grounding system. The main objective of this paper is to present an optimized design of earthing system for a substation located in high soil resistivity with limited plot area at Himachal Pradesh state of India using computer design program. A hybrid methodology for analyzing the performance of a grounding system with chemical ground electrolytic rods, ground enhancement materials and auxiliary wire mats has been developed. The design is based on the measured soil resistivity of the substation site and proposed methodology is found to be safe for operation.

From a disaster prevention and mitigation perspective, effective and efficient assessment of earthquake-induced liquefaction is important for urban regions of a large number of sites of concern. Conventional approaches, e.g., using engineering indices such as FL (Factor of safety against Liquefaction), tend to overestimate liquefaction hazard. As an alternative, soil dynamics analysis takes into account ground motion directly and solves the physics problems rigorously. In this study, we introduce high performance computing (HPC) for liquefaction assessment based on soil dynamics analysis. The performance of the liquefaction assessment code is measured on two commercial servers for a fixed problem size as assessing 10240 target sites. A linear speedup for a 32-core server and an almost linear speedup up to 480 cores for a 512-core server are obtained. Applying HPC for liquefaction hazard assessment based on soil dynamic analysis enables efficient and effective hazard assessment for urban regions of numerous sites. © 2017 15th International conference of the International Association for computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics

Scientific visualization is an effective way to analyze the complex datasets generated from numerical simulations. Current supercomputer I/O performance struggles to match the rapidly improving computing performance. Therefore, there is in urgent need for in situ visualization to reduce the amount of data output during large-scale scientific simulations. This paper presents an in situ component technique that enables a general purpose visualization tool to be flexibly coupled with the simulations based on JASMIN, a parallel programming framework for large-scale numerical simulations. Using the presented technique, the data analysis and visualization tasks are shifted to run in situ, that is, closer to the simulation via resource sharing. It is beneficial to avoid storing large-scale datasets for post-processing. Subsequently, a tightly coupled in situ visualization mode is proposed, in which visualization code can be deployed into application code with low code-integration cost. This code can then run on the same supercomputer resources as the simulation code. The JASMIN-based in situ component provides a bridge between a batch of parallel simulation applications and existing visualization packages. The implemented component allows applications to integrate the rich functionality of existing visualization tools with a unified data-management interface. It also enables efficient use of supercomputer resources through a batch processing mechanism. In situ visualization of the electromagnetic interference surrounding an aircraft is simulated using a model that comprises 8.5 billion grid cells on the TianHe-2 supercomputer. © 2017.

In this paper, a class of 3D bandpass frequency selective structures (FSSs) using stacked planar slotlines is proposed to exhibit bandpass filtering response of high performance. Firstly, a traditional slot-type frequency selective surface and the proposed stacked planar slotlines are introduced successively, and their operating principles are discussed to provide a comparison with each other. Then, two design examples on the basis of the stacked slotlines are presented to exhibit bandpass response with wide out-of-band rejection and high frequency selectivity, respectively. It is found that the stacked slotline structures can produce controllable multi-mode resonance and be exactly analyzed by using transmission-line theory over a wide frequency range. © 2018 IEICE

Cloud computing platforms are becoming viable alternative for running high performance parallel applications. However, when running these applications in cloud platforms, VMs (virtual machines) are easily affected by the synchronization latency problem which leads to serious performance degradation. There are two main reasons. The first is that a host is unaware of the synchronization requirements of the guest OS. The second is that the synchronization requests of VMs on a physical host are unknown to VMs on the other physical host. It is a great challenge to mitigate the negative influence of virtualization on synchronization and accelerate the synchronization response of HPC applications. In this paper, we propose a two -phase synchronization-aware (TPS) scheduling algorithm to solve the problem above. The TPS algorithm takes both intra-VMs' and inter-VMs' synchronization demands into consideration. Spin-locks and network packets are used as the metrics to detect the synchronization demands of VMs and VMs are scheduled based on spinlock-aware and communication-aware strategies. The algorithm is implemented on the base of KVM and experiments are conducted in a cluster environment. The experimental results show that our TPS algorithm obtains a better performance for HPC applications and reduces negative impacts on non-HPC applications simultaneously. Therefore, our approach is an effective solution to the HPC synchronization issues in cloud platforms.

The study of ocean currents has been an active area of research for decades. As a model close to the water surface, the shallow water equations (SWE) can be used. For realistic simulations, efficient numerical solvers are necessary that exhibit a good node-level performance while still maintaining scalability. When comparing the discretized model and the actual implementation, one often finds that they differ vastly. This gap makes it hard for domain experts to implement their models and high performance computing (HPC) experts are required to ensure an optimal implementation. Using domain-specific languages (DSLs) and code generation techniques can be a useful tool to bridge this gap. In recent years, ExaStencils and its DSL ExaSlang have proven to provide a suitable platform for this. We present an extension from up to now elliptic to hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) in this work, namely the SWE. After setting up a suitable discretization, we demonstrate how it can be mapped to ExaSlang code. This code is still quite similar to the original, mathematically motivated specification and can be easily written by domain experts. Still, solvers generated from this abstract representation can be run on large-scale clusters. We demonstrate this by giving performance and scalability results on the state-of-the-art GPU cluster Piz Daint where we solve for close to a trillion unknowns on 2048 GPUs. From there, we discuss the performance impact of different optimizations such as overlapping computation and communication, or switching to a hybrid CPU-GPU parallelization scheme.

The aerodynamics of a 155-mm, spin-stabilized projectile was performed using steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and time-accurate RANS/Large-eddy Simulation (LES) simulations for angles of attack, α ≤ 40°. RANS simulations were found to adequately predict all aerodynamic coefficients for α ≤ 20°, except for the Magnus coefficients for α 20° to adequately predict the coefficients that strongly depended on the projectile leeside flow separation, e.g, Magnus (side) force, Magnus moment, pitch damping moment, and roll damping moment. As might be expected, the predicted nonlinearities were most prevalent in the aerodynamic coefficients that depend on the boundary layer development and/or the characteristics of the leeside flow separation. The nonlinear trends in the aerodynamics coefficients were correlated to observed changes in the structure of the leeside vortex pairs as angle of attack increased. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Finite automata have proven their usefulness in high-profile domains ranging from network security to machine learning. While prior work focused on their applicability for purely regular expression workloads such as antivirus and network security rulesets, recent research has shown that automata can optimize the performance for algorithms in other areas such as machine learning and even particle physics. Unfortunately, their emulation on traditional CPU architectures is fundamentally slow and further bottlenecked by memory. In this paper, we present REAPR: Reconfigurable Engine for Automata PRocessing, a flexible framework that synthesizes RTL for automata processing applications as well as I/O to handle data transfer to and from the kernel. We show that even with memory and control flow overheads, FPGAs still enable extremely high-throughput computation of automata workloads compared to other architectures.

The aerodynamic performance and airframe propulsion integration of the NATO AVT- 251 multi-disciplinary configuration, named Muldicon, are considered. The objective of this NATO Task Group is to computationally design a yable vehicle based on the SAC- CON uninhabited combat aerial vehicle planform to meet a desired mission. SACCON had 53 degrees sweep leading and trailing edges. Due to the vehicle's stability and control problems at moderate angles of attack, it was decided to modify the Muldicon planform. The leading edge is still swept 53 degrees, but the trailing edge has a sweep angle of 30 degrees relative to the span line. This new vehicle has a wing span of about 15 meters and a wing area of 77.876m2. The outline shape of the vehicle is currently fixed, but the airfoil section and trailing edge will be selected by the Task Group participants. In this research, three preliminary designs are considered: first one has a uniform airfoil section based on NACA 6 series airfoil sections and is called "Design 0", the second one has an airfoil section shape which was selected using a reverse engineering method and a vortex lattice solver. The objectives of this design were to eliminate vortical flows over the wing at small and moderate angles of attack and to extend linear aerodynamics regime. Finally, the third wing has similar airfoil to the second one, but uses thicker airfoil section at the wing root allowing engine's installation. This work firstly investigates and compares the aerodynamic performance of all designs using CREATE™ Kestrel flow solver. A system identification method is described and used to estimate the vehicle static and dynamic stability derivatives as well. In addition, this research investigates the propulsion integration issues of the vehicle. The vehicle has a single turbofan engine buried inside the wing. This engine performance will be significantly affected by the design of intake and exhaust ducts and vehicle aerodynamics, e.g. boundary l
