The near-field electromagnetic ranging(NFER)technology exploits the near-field phase behavior of low frequency signals to measure the distance and can provide better ranging performance than the high frequency signal based methods in the cluttered environments. However, the currently existing NFER system uses the mono-frequency signals and can not obtain same ranging accuracy at different distances. In addition, low signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) seriously impacts the ranging accuracy. In this paper, we proposed a wideband signal based NFER system to improve the ranging performance. Instead of the mono-frequency signals, the proposed wideband system transmits the wideband signals. We use frequency domain phase measurement(FDPM) to detect the phase difference between received electric field signal and magnetic field signal. Then the least squares method is used to estimate the distance. Simulation results show that the proposed wideband NFER system can improve the ranging performance at low SNR environment and within a wide range of distances.

Background activities on smartphones are essential to today's "always-on"mobile device experience. Yet, there lacks a clear understanding of the cooperative behaviors among background activities as well as a quantification of the consequences. In this paper, we present the first in-depth study of app collusion, in which one app surreptitiously launches others in the background without user's awareness. To enable the study, we develop AppHolmes, a static analysis tool for detecting app collusion by examining the app binaries. By analyzing 10,000 apps from top third-party app markets, we found that i) covert, cooperative behaviors in background app launch are surprisingly pervasive, ii) most collusion is caused by shared services, libraries, or common interest among apps, and iii) collusion has serious impact on performance, efficiency, and security. Overall, our work presents a strong implication on future mobile system design.

Face sketch synthesis plays an important role in both law enforcement and digital entertainment. Frequency-used exemplar-based methods mainly consist of neighbor selection and reconstruction weight representation two parts. However, the training sketches usually are not taken into account during both of the aforementioned two processes. Thus, the obtained reconstruction weight may not fit for the sketch synthesis due to the difference between the selected training photo and sketch patch pairs. In this paper, we propose a joint training model to improve the sketch synthesis performance by concatenating the high-pass information of the training sketch patches with photo patches together when calculating the reconstruction weight. Extensive experiments on public dataset show that the proposed model can obtain outperform target sketches both from subjective and objective comparison. © 2017 IEEE.

Modern large-scale data stores widely adopt consensus protocols to achieve high availability and throughput. The recently proposed Raft algorithm has better understandability and widely implemented in large amount of open source projects. In these consensus algorithms including Raft, log replication is a common and frequently used operation which has significant impact on the system performance. Especially, since the commit latency is capped by the slowest follower out of the majority followers responded to the leader, it's important to design a fast scheme to process the replicated logs by follower nodes. Based on the analysis on how the follower node handles the received log entries in Raft algorithm, we figure out the main factors influencing the duration time from when the follower receives the log and to when it acknowledges the leader this log was received. In terms of these factors we propose an effective log replication scheme to optimize the process of flushing logs to disk and replaying them, referred to as Raft with Fast Followers (FRaft). Finally, we compare the performance of Raft and FRaft using YCSB benchmark and Sysbench test tools, and experimental results demonstrate FRaft has lower latency and higher throughput than the Raft only using straightforward pipeline and batch optimization for log replication.

In this research we describe the development and optimisation of a new Monte Carlo neutral particle transport mini-app, neutral. In spite of the success of previous research efforts to load balance the algorithm at scale, it is not clear how to take advantage of the diverse architectures being installed in the newest supercomputers. We explore different algorithmic approaches, and perform extensive investigations into the performance of the application on modern hardware including Intel Xeon and Xeon Phi CPUs, POWER8 CPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs. When applied to particle transport the Monte Carlo method is not embarrassingly parallel, as might be expected, due to dependencies on the computational mesh that expose random memory access patterns. The algorithm requires the use of atomic operations, and exhibits load imbalance at the node-level due to the random branching of particle histories. The algorithmic characteristics make it challenging to exploit the high memory bandwidth and FLOPS of modern HPC architectures. Both of the parallelisation schemes discussed in this paper are dominated latency issues caused by poor data locality, and are restricted by the use of atomic operations for tallying calculations. We saw a significant improvement in performance through the use of hyperthreading on all CPUs and best performance on the NVIDIA P100 GPU. A key observation is that architectures that are tolerant to latencies may be able to hide the negative characteristics of the algorithms.

The development and progress of science and technology have shortened the life cycle of products, causing the development of small-volume, diverse and innovative products to become the mainstream. Accordingly, Reverse Engineering Technology (RE) is in line with the needs and trends of the times. This study takes the range hood as its subject and mainly applied reverse engineering in its impeller and bellows structure. Furthermore, computer Aided Engineering (CAE) was integrated in the development of a new type of straight-blade impeller system. The analysis results showed that the overall airflow went into both sides of the bellows and was discharged after application of pressure in the impeller and air-rectification in the bellows. The airflow field presented a streamlined and non-turbulent state in the impeller system. In addition, actual machine tests showed that when the impeller speed was 1130 rpm, air volume reached 18.08 CMM, which was nearly 30% better than the output air volume of axial flow models. In particular, the overall development time was shortened by 15%, thus effectively improving the efficiency of development and manufacture.

Modern electricity grid is a combination of traditional power system and a wide area cyber network from power generation to distribution end. Wide area measurement systems (WAMS) is one of the technologies used in the smart grid, responsible to provide a GPS enabled phasor measurements of geographically distributed substations in the grid with a high speed of 25/50 data frames per second. Thus, the performance of a WAMS based real time monitoring and control analytics is mainly determined by the communication backbone of the WAMS. In this study we introduce a simple, scalable, modular and extensible simulation framework for WAMS which is a seamless integration of cyber network and power system simulators. It is implemented using mininet a network simulator, iPDC a PMU-PDC simulator and EMTP(ATP) a power system transient simulation program. Further in this paper we present a case study modeled using this simulator to assess the Quality of Service (QoS) of the WAMS network. The case study reports the communication delay distribution for PMU-PDC, impacts of multimedia traffic on PMU data transmission rate, comparison of communication delays associated with TCP and UDP protocols. Thus this simulator can be a platform to test different analytics for their QoS requirements before their real field deployment.

While metric learning is important for Person re-identification ( RE-ID), a significant problem in visual surveillance for cross-view pedestrian matching, existing metric models for RE-ID are mostly based on supervised learning that requires quantities of labeled samples in all pairs of camera views for training. However, this limits their scalabilities to realistic applications, in which a large amount of data over multiple disjoint camera views is available but not labelled. To overcome the problem, we propose unsupervised asymmetric metric learning for unsupervised RE-ID. Our model aims to learn an asymmetric metric, i.e., specific projection for each view, based on asymmetric clustering on cross-view person images. Our model finds a shared space where view-specific bias is alleviated and thus better matching performance can be achieved. Extensive experiments have been conducted on a baseline and five large-scale RE-ID datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Through the comparison, we show that our model works much more suitable for unsupervised RE-ID compared to classical unsupervised metric learning models. We also compare with existing unsupervised REID methods, and our model outperforms them with notable margins. Specifically, we report the results on large-scale unlabelled RE-ID dataset, which is important but unfortunately less concerned in literatures.

In this paper we propose a challenging new computer vision task of inferring Bread Units (BUs) from food images. Assessing nutritional information and nutrient volume from a meal is an important task for diabetes patients. At the moment, diabetes patients learn the assessment of BUs on a scale of one to ten, by learning correspondence of BU and meals from textbooks. We introduce a large scale data set of around 9k different RGB-D images of 60 western dishes acquired using a Microsoft Kinect v2 sensor. We recruited 20 diabetes patients to give expert assessments of BU values to each dish based on several images. For this task, we set a challenging baseline using state-of-the-art CNNs and evaluated it against the performance of human annotators. In our work we present a CNN architecture to infer the depth from RGB-only food images to be used in BU regression such that the pipeline can operate on RGB data only and compare its performance to RGB-D input data. We show that our inferred depth maps from RGB images can replace RGB-D input data at high significance for the BU regression task. In its best configuration, our proposed method achieves a RMSE of 1.53 BUs using RGB and inferred depth. Considering the variability among the raters themselves of RMSE = 0.89, we can show that our baseline method with depth prediction can extract reasonable nutritional information from RGB image data only.

Upgrading the window glazing can help minimize the energy consumption through a reduction of solar heat gain in summer or indoor heat loss in winter. On the other hand, the mutual shading caused by surrounding high-rise buildings could affect the energy performance of the window glazing. In hot climate, mutual shading could further reduce the solar heat gain. In cold climate, overshadowing lowers the solar heat gain in winter resulting in greater demand for space heating. To explore the most energy-efficient window glazing for different climates, it is imperative to integrate mutual shading with window retrofit measures when evaluating the thermal performance of a building. This study applies a computer-based simulation program known as DesignBuilder to assess the building performance. The energy model is based on a typical high-rise residential building, and four common double energy-efficient glazing alternatives were employed in lieu of single clear glass. The results show that the optimum window retrofit solution vary with different climatic conditions and there are different choices for upgrading window glazing in the same building with and without the consideration of mutual shading due to the mutual shading effect on the energy use.
