This paper presents image-based quantitative evaluation of subtle variations in facial wrinkles for the same subject in response to a dermatological treatment. This is a novel application because the time series images of the same subject over a shorter time period of weeks are analyzed as compared to more prevalent inter-person analysis of facial skin/marks. We propose image features based on Gabor filter bank for an accurate quantitative evaluation of variations in facial wrinkles. Since variations in Gabor features are very small on a time period of weeks, we propose a framework to compare image features in key wrinkle sites only while excluding the noise introduced by non-wrinkle sites. The framework consists of finer registration of images using Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping (LDDMM) and detection of wrinkle sites using Gabor filter bank and morphological image processing. Preliminary experiments show that the framework is useful in calculating variations in Gabor features at detected sites and indicating trends in the response of facial wrinkles to the dermatological treatment.

Mathematical morphology (MM) helps to describe and analyze shapes using set theory. MM can be effectively applied to binary images which are treated as sets. Basic morphological operators defined can be used as an effective tool in image processing. morphological operators are also developed based on graph and hypergraph. These operators have found better performance and applications in image processing. Bino et al. [8], [9] developed the theory of morphological operators on hypergraph. A hypergraph structure is considered and basic morphological operation erosion/dilation is defined. Several new operators opening/closing and filtering are also defined on the hypergraphs. Hypergraph based filtering have found comparatively better performance with morphological filters based on graph. In this paper we evaluate the effectiveness of hypergraph based ASF on binary images. Experimental results shows that hypergraph based ASF filters have outperformed graph based ASF.

In ultrasound, second harmonic imaging is usually preferred due to the higher clutter artifacts and speckle noise common in the first harmonic image. Typical ultrasound use either one or the other image, applying corresponding filters for each case. In this work we propose a method based on a joint sparsity model that fuses the first and second harmonic images while performing clutter mitigation and noise reduction. Our approach, Fused morphological Component Analysis (FMCA), uses two adaptive dictionaries for characterizing the clutter components in each image, and a common dictionary for the tissue representation. Our results indicate that the obtained images contain less clutter artifacts, less speckle noise and as such enjoy of the benefits of both harmonic input images.

This paper presents innovative approach towards design, developing, and implementation of image processing based application using embedded vision platform. Android provides platform for developing embedded system. By using OpenCv library, image processing based algorithm can be implemented on android devices. By using OpenCv with android embedded vision based system can be developed which can be replaced for machine vision based system. Android based embedded vision system reduces size of the system and also cost effective solution for industries. The android application presented in this paper performs basic operations like colour transforms, edge detection, morphological operation etc. The Paper also describes the flow of developing embedded vision applications using android devices along with some problems and its solutions.

In this study, object tracking application by using image processing and PI controlling is implemented. The color property of the desired object which was wanted to be detected and tracked by image processing technique was utilized and it's position in front of the camera was aimed to be fixed. Controlling technique is using the PI variation of the PID controlling technique. In order to determine the object definitely morphological applications were used and the noise filtered by the median filter. The coordinate information of the object which was aimed to be tracked was determined as the pixel value which was in the gravity center of the object in the frame received from the camera. If the object within the image received from the camera away from the center point, margin of error is applied to the PI algorithm as a input. All this given procedures were written with C programming under a single program and were used in Raspberry Pi development card which has ARM11 microprocessor architecture. For image processing, OpenCv libraries were used.

In this work a novel approach to edge detection on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is introduced. The proposed method uses an optics inspired transform which emulates the diffraction of an image through a medium with nonlinear dispersive properties. The experimental results show that the output of the introduced Phase Stretch Transform (PST) in conjunction with further morphological operations can be effectively used for image edge detection.

This paper introduces a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) technique for segmentation of mass in breast ultrasound (BUS) images followed by an efficient classification of the image into benign or malignant one. The presence of speckle noise, low contrast and blurred boundary of mass in a BUS image makes it challenging to determine the mass, which is the region of interest (ROI) in the current work. Detecting an accurate ROI in turn results in efficient feature extraction and classification. In current work, image enhancement and speckle noise reduction are implemented for preprocessing in a simple but efficient way through filtering techniques. The results of the preprocessing stage are as effective as those obtained using traditional speckle reduction anisotropic diffusion (SRAD) algorithm. ROI is then accurately determined on preprocessed image by employing local region based active contour method. BUS images are classified through textural, morphological and histogram oriented feature metrics in this work. The obtained features are dimensionally reduced using principal component analysis (PCA) and classified through support vector machine (SvM) method. The proposed method is tested on several images and found to be very effective having an accuracy of 95.7% with very high specificity and positive predictive value (PPv).

In this paper, we have introduced a generalized block-lifting structure using the 2-D CORDIC algorithm as a block of 4-band linear phase paraunitary filter banks (LP PUFB) based on the quaternionic algebra (Q-PUFB) for the lossy-to-lossless image coding. A bank Q-PUFB based on the 2-D CORDIC block-lifting structure reduces the number of rounding operations and has a regular layout. Since the block-lifting structures with rounding operations can implement the integer-to-integer transform (Q-PUFB). The parallel-pipelined efficient architecture (P 2 E_Q-PUFB) has been proposed. The low latency separable image processing is implemented in the given architecture.

In this paper, we propose a new error concealment algorithm for video/image based on canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Motivated by the Intra prediction in H.264/AvC, it is reasonable to assume that there is a strong spatial correlation relationship between the lost regions and their known adjacent regions. Based on the above idea, we use CCA to estimate a correlation projection matrix which utilizes the loss of macro block adjacent spatial information, then we use the projection matrix and the adjacent region to estimate missing pixel area. In addition, in order to use the spatial information efficiently, we apply the neighbor-embedding-type weight into the aforementioned CCA model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method improves the subjective and objective image quality to a large extent in comparison with other existing methods.

The main objective of this paper is to classify rainfall radar images by using the scattering transform, which gives us a translation invariant representation of the images and preserves high-frequency information useful to encode important morphological aspects of the meteorological phenomena under study. To demonstrate the usefulness of the approach, a classification framework is considered, where the images are to be classified into 4 morphological classes: light rain, shower, unorganised storm and organised storm. Experiments show that the benefits of the scattering are threefold: 1) it provides complementary information with respect to more traditional features computed over the distribution of the rainfall intensities, 2) it provides strong invariance to deformations, 3) second order coefficients of the scattering transform nicely encodes spatial distribution of rain intensity.
