Over the recent years there has been growing interest to propose a robust and efficient hand gesture recognition (HGR) system, using real-time depth sensors like Microsoft Kinect. The performance of such HGR systems have been affected by the low resolution, noise and quantization error in the depth stream. In this paper, we propose a method to pre-process Kinect depth stream in order to overcome some of these limitations. The design approach utilizes the hand tracker from OpenNI SDK to perform distance invariant segmentation of hand region depth stream. This is followed by the construction of three different projections of hand in XY, ZX and ZY planes. These projections are then further enhanced using a combination of morphological closing and simple averaging based interpolation. The evaluation results show above 80% similarity with ground truth, and 1.45-5.35% increase in accuracy for gestures with recognition accuracy less than 90%.

Rice is one of the most important cereal grains. The paper presents a solution for quality evaluation and grading of Krishna Kamod rice using image processing and soft computing technique. In this paper basic problem of rice industry for quality assessment is defined which is traditionally done manually by human inspector. Machine vision provides one alternative for an automated, non-destructive and cost-effective technique. The proposed method for quality assessment of INDIAN KAMOD ORYZA SATIvA SSP INDICA (Krishna Kamod Rice) using image processing and multi-layer feed forward neural network technique which achieves high degree of quality than human vision inspection. The proposed algorithm based on morphological features is developed for counting the number of Krishna Kamod rice seeds with long seeds as well as small seeds. A trained multi-layer feed forward neural network based classifier is developed for identification of unknown rice seed quality.

The paper describes current results of a research and development (R&D) project aimed to create an advanced prototype of an Enhanced and Synthetic vision System (ESvS). The paper contains functional requirements for the ESvS prototype and discusses the main principles of its development. Brief overview of ESvS hardware and platform is given. The following image processing algorithms of ESvS are described: image enhancement based on modification of the Retinex algorithm, image fusion based on a morphological approach, runway detection based on the original modification of Hough transform - Projection Hough Transform, and runway obstacles detection based on photogrammetric method. The main features of the synthetic vision function of ESvS are described which provide computationally efficient creation of a realistic three-dimensional (3D) out- the-cabin view using terrain, objects, and texture databases.

Mathematical morphology is a formalism largely used in image processing for implementing many different tasks. Several operators that support the formalism have also been successfully used for inducing data clusters. Particularly, the Binary Morphology Clustering Algorithm (BMCA) is one of such inductive methods which, given a set of input patterns and morphological operators, produces clusters of patterns as output. BMCA results, however, are dependent on suitable user-defined values for the set of parameters the algorithm employs namely, the resolution of its initial discretization process, the threshold associated with a distance metric, the threshold associated with region density and the structuring element embedded in morphological operators. This paper proposes a combined approach where an evolutionary algorithm is employed for searching suitable parameter values for BMCA aiming at producing more efficient results as far as the clustering process is concerned. The proposal was implemented as the system BMCAbyGA, used in several successful clustering experiments described in the final part of the paper. BMCAbyGA has been applied to a Cartesian Genetic Programming approach for the automatic construction of image Alters in hardware.

Dynamic textures are sequences of images of moving scenes that exhibit certain stationary properties in time, these includes sea-waves, smoke, foliage, whirlwind, crowd, etc. This proposal is made to present a novel characterization of dynamic textures. That poses the problems of modeling, learning, recognizing, classifying, synthesizing, and editing dynamic textures on a firm analytical footing. Dynamic textures are decomposed using diamond search motion estimation methodology;Diamond search motion estimation algorithm which could divides the frames into 16x16 pixels that can make the decomposition faster when compared to existing MCA method. The RGB frames are converted into gray scale image using MATLAB tool and resulted MIF (memory initialization file) is applied to diamond search logic which is designed using MATLAB. Our proposed system increases the processing speed of decomposite textures. The morphological Component Analysis (MCA), and Diamond Search (DS) algorithm are used calculate the PSNR values.

Human face detection plays a vital role in many applications like video surveillance, managing a face image database, human computer interface among others. This paper proposes a robust algorithm for face detection in still color images that works well even in a crowded environment. The algorithm uses conjunction of skin color histogram, morphological processing and geometrical analysis for detecting human faces. To reinforce the accuracy of face detection, we further identify mouth and eye regions to establish the presence/absence of face in a particular region of interest.

Mathematical morphology (MM) which is based on the algebra of nonlinear operators, operands on object shape and in many respects supersedes the linear algebraic system of convolution. And it has become a powerful tool in Digital image processing (DIP). It allows processing images to enhance fuzzy areas, segment objects, detect edges and analyze structures. Fuzzy systems are capable of representing diverse, non-exact, uncertain and inaccurate knowledge or information. They use qualifiers that are very close to human way of expressing knowledge, such as bright, medium dark, dark etc. They are based on fuzzy logic, which represents a powerful approach to decision making. Our approach is to apply mathematical morphological principals to some application of image analysis like Segmentation. And also to apply Fuzzy mathematical morphological principles and compare the results with basic mathematical morphology to show how the fuzzy sets specifically utilized in MM have turned into afunctional tool in DIP.

An algorithm of edge detection based on mathematical morphology is discussed in the paper. Due to the characteristics of the basic morphology algorithm of image processing, the common edge detection algorithms with traditional morphological edge detection algorithm are analyzed and compared, and the characteristics of each, as well as inadequateness are given here. Combined with the geometric algorithms, applied to binary gray scale image edge detection, based on the classic edge detection algorithms and soft filtering properties, the morphology of the soft edge detection algorithm and optimization algorithm is put forward for the edge detection and image de-noising processing.

A vision-based pedestrian and car tracking system which is able to distinguish between car and pedestrian is possible using morphological processing and Blob analysis. videos are sequence of image frames. Here the algorithm is developed to analyse a frame and the same will be applied to all frames in a video. The unwanted objects in video frame can be removed by converting colour frames into a gray scale and by applying thresholding algorithm. Threshold can be set depending on the object to be detected. Gray scale image will be converted to binary during thresholding process. morphological processing will be applied on binary image to remove small unwanted objects that are presented in a frame. A developed blob analysis technique for extracted binary image facilitates pedestrian and car detection. processing blob's information of relative size and location leads to distinguishing between pedestrian and car. The threshold' morphological and blobs process is applied to all frames in a video and finally original video with tagged cars will be displayed. © 2012 IEEE.

Text detection and localization in Multi-color images is important for content-based image analysis. This conflict is occurring due to the various backgrounds, the inhomogeneous illumination, and the variations of text font, size and line orientation. In this the image is converted into grayscale image then median filter is used to discard the unwanted noise in the gray scale image. Edge detection is mentioned by using canny edge detection and sobel edge detector. Canny edge detection is used to measure edges of the horizontal and vertical axis present *** text region in gray scale image. Sobel edge detector is used to measure edges of the overall boundaries of the horizontal and vertical axis present in the grayscale image. A mask is a dark and light image of the same dimensions as the original image (or the region of interest we are working in). Group of the pixels in the mask can have therefore a value of 0 (black) or 1 (white). When executing operations on the image the mask is used to restrict the result to the pixels that are 1 (selected, active, and white) in the mask. morphological operations are defined by moving a structuring element over a binary image to be modified in such a way that it is centered over an image pixel at some point. The process of removing certain details in an image which is smaller than certain preference shape is called morphological image processing and the preference shape is called structuring element. The goal of the connected component analysis is to detect the large sized connected foreground region or object. This is one of the important operations in motion detection. The pixels that are collectively connected can be clustered into changing or moving objects by analyzing their connectivity.
