We present the design principles of Rank Based Merge Sorting Network (RBMSN) architectures for the realization of 2D median and morphological filters used in image preprocessing. The proposed architectures focus on optimization strategies for sorting in terms of the number of comparators and throughput. The minimization in the computational cost is achieved by rank range based merging, column sorting and storing the sorted elements of the overlapping columns of the consecutive windows at each intermediate stage of the sorting network. The proposed architecture uses the concepts of pipelining and grain level parallelism to accomplish the task of processing one pixel per clock cycle. The architectures for median erosion and dilation filters are synthesized for 30 and 5x5 window sizes. The proposed RBMSN Median filter architectures for (sic) window size require N/2(Log(2) N) comparators and root N (root N - 1), memory registers. The proposed design and implementations are compared with a few of the reported architectures.

In this work, we focus on studying a morpheme-based speech recognition system for Basque, an highly inflected language that is official language in the Basque Country (northern Spain). Two different techniques are presented to decompose the words into their morphological units. The morphological units are then integrated into an Automatic Speech Recognition System, and those systems are then compared to a word-based approach in terms of accuracy and processing speed. Results show that whereas the morpheme-based approaches perform similarly from an accuracy point of view, they can be significantly faster than the word-based system when applied to a weather-forecast task. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

The aim of this study is to propose an algorithm for simplifying color images. The assumption is made that a set of reference colors is available and that this set indicates which features are of importance in the image. The goal is then to simplify as much as possible the color image while preserving as much as possible the shapes that are similar to the reference set. The proposed algorithm is in two steps. In a first step, a scalar similarity image of same morphological structure as the color image is computed. This allows to associate similarity-level sets with the color image that are used, in the second step, for performing a similarity-adaptive simplification of the color image: each similarity-level set is associated with a certain filter, the filtering parameter being a decreasing function of the similarity.

The ability to properly control and eliminate weed infestation in cotton fields can be a crucial factor for the crop's profitability. Site specific weed management has long been marked as the next step in precision agriculture and the tools of remote sensing and image processing stands in the front line of this discipline. Several researches that have conducted trials in this field showed encouraging results for distinguishing weeds from the crop, but no mechanism has been implemented yet in the agriculture routine. This fact has driven us to develop a low cost, yet effective, method for weed map preparation which later on will be used for on-the-go herbicide application. A new approach is suggested which includes combining information from a hydro-thermal model into image processing algorithms. This information consists of the expected number of plants per m2, leaves per plant and other inouts. The suggested system consists of a simple RGB camera, mounted on a tractor's sprayer boom and connected to an on-board computer. A video file is recorded with the camera at a rate of 7.5 frames per second. The pictures are then being extracted from this file and analyzed in a MatLab™ environment. The process involves applying different vegetation indices using the RGB channels. Object separation is based on morphological features and compared to incoming information from the hydro-thermal model and data from previous years. The result of this process is a 'weed map' calibrated with DGPS data that had been collected during the image acquisition stage. The information achieved each year will also be used for continuous update and amendment of the hydro-thermal model.

This paper presents the study of vocal videostroboscopic videos to detect morphological pathologies using a combination of motion information and segmentation. The motion permits us to obtain the keyframes of total (or minimum) closure and maximum opening and to have the initialization for the segmentation process. The segmentation is made analyzing the image textures applying Gabor filtering. After this stage, where the pathology is (if it exists) is delimited using derivative techniques and interpolation. Finally, the pathology is localized and we can extract some features of each fold.

In this work the most important morphological granulometry, i.e. the pattern spectrum, is modeled, for the first time in the literature, as a first order Markov process. In addition, each of the terms of the process is shown to be normally distributed. The classification procedure followed for this specific application is based on modeling each separate class as a Markov process and making extensive use of the chain rule. Experimental results support the proposed classification procedure as quite promising, especially when compared to conventional classification techniques.

Wind turbine wakes cause power reduction and structural loading. A data-driven approach is proposed for wake modeling to provide the azimuth, angular spread, and intensity of wakes. We introduce three wind speed difference definitions for wake analysis. The wake identification is automated using morphological imaging operators. The wake pattern is complicated by multiple neighboring turbines. Four fusion schemes are proposed to draw a complete picture. A similarity based clustering enhances the final fusion result by treating clusters, each with specific features, equally.

Here we introduce a novel watermarking paradigm designed to be both asymmetric, i.e., involving a private key for embedding and a public key for detection, and commutative with a suitable encryption scheme, allowing both to cipher watermarked data and to mark encrypted data without interphering with the detection process. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the above principles, we present an explicit example where the watermarking part, based on elementary linear algebra, and the encryption part, exploiting a secret random permutation, are integrated in a commutative scheme.

In the present paper color image segmentation, based on the notion of critical functions, is investigated. The notion of critical functions is, derived from the well-known waterfall transformation. In the one-dimensional case the critical functions and the waterfall transformation provide similar results. However in the two-dimensional case, the critical functions give better results for segmenting images than the waterfall transformation, since they take into account the fusion of regional minima (or maxima) to transform the image, providing a good control of the regions merging process. Moreover, contrary to the waterfall tran. formation which is non-parametric, critical junctions allow the introduction of image segmentation criteria to compute an optimal partition. To carry out our study, a color space based on, the opponent colors is proposed that we call YO1O2 model. The main reason to propose it new color space is that despite the numerous perceptually color spaces (HSv HSL, HSI, among others) proposed in the literature, the-v have several drawbacks for color image processing. The performance in image segmentation of both proposals, the color model and critical functions, is illustrated with several examples. Also, some interesting properties of the color model YO1O2 and the critical functions are shown.
