Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Approximately 50% of these deaths could be prevented by earlier detection through screening. Magnification chromoendoscopy is a technique which utilizes tissue stains applied to the gastrointestinal mucosa and high-magnification endoscopy to better visualize and characterize lesions. Prior studies have shown that shapes of colonic crypts change with disease and show characteristic patterns. Current methods for assessing colonic crypt patterns are somewhat subjective and not standardized. Computerized algorithms could be used to standardize colonic crypt pattern assessment. We have imaged resected colonic mucosa in vitro (N = 70) using methylene blue dye and a surgical microscope to approximately simulate in vivo imaging with magnification chromoendoscopy. We have developed a method of computerized processing to analyze the crypt patterns in the images. The quantitative image analysis consists of three steps. First, the crypts within the region of interest of colonic tissue are semi-automatically segmented using watershed morphological processing. Second, crypt size and shape parameters are extracted from the segmented crypts. Third, each sample is assigned to a category according to the Kudo criteria. The computerized classification is validated by comparison with human classification using the Kudo classification criteria. The computerized colonic crypt pattern analysis algorithm will enable a study of in vivo magnification chromoendoscopy of colonic crypt pattern correlated with risk of colorectal cancer. This study will assess the feasibility of screening and surveillance of the colon using magnification chromoendoscopy.

In the given work we shall define a technique of the decision of problems of allocation of elementary karstic forms on the electrolocation image, by means of spectral EGM. The analysis of an opportunity of optimum filters synthesis for elementary spectral models of karstic forms is carried with the purpose of their allocation in electrolocation images. It will allow simplifying in further processing of the experimental information. According to bases of a spectral method of the analysis and synthesis of the systems, the given problem can be shown to an optimum non-stationary filtration for a known useful component. This method assumes spectral optimum designing dynamic characteristics of filters in the form of spectral representations, on the basis of matrix equation according to a minimum of an average square-law mistake.

A wavelet transformation based on max-plus algebra is proposed, where analysis and synthesis operations are defined by max (or min) and standard sum and they treat with 9 channel multi resolution images. The proposed wavelets especially can reserve edge information on compressed images due to the non-linear operations (max and min);therefore, they are efficient for the compression of predictive frames used in video compression and reconstruction. Through video compression and reconstruction experiments using standard video database, it is confirmed that effectiveness of the proposed wavelets.

In this paper, a method for detecting possible presence of abnormality in the endoscopic images is presented. The pre-processed endoscopic color images are segmented in the HSI color space. The pixels in the input color image corresponding to the segmented image are extracted for further processing. This image is smoothened using average filter and converted into grayscale image. Its inverse transform is obtained for further processing and extended minima is imposed on the processed image using morphological reconstruction. Then the morphological watershed segmentation is carried out on this image and the number of regions is counted and is compared with the threshold value. If the number of regions is more than the threshold value, then the output image is an indicative of possible presence of abnormality in the image. © 2006 IEEE.

Information of retinal vasculature morphology is being used in grading the severity and progression of diabetic retinopathy. An image analysis system can assist ophthalmologist make accurate diagnosis in an efficient manner. In this paper, the development of an image processing algorithm for detecting and reconstructing of retinal vasculature is presented. The detection of the vascular structure is achieved by image enhancement using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization followed by the extraction of the vessels using Bottom-hat morphological transformation. For reconstruction of the complete retinal vasculature, a region growing technique based on first-order Gaussian derivative is developed. The technique incorporates both gradient magnitude change and average intensity as the homogeneity criteria that enable the process to adapt to intensity changes and intensity spread over the vasculature region. The reconstruction technique reduces the required number of seeds to near optimal for the region growing process. It also overcomes poor performance of current seed-based methods especially in low and inconsistent contrast images as normally seen in vasculature regions of fundus images. Simulations of the algorithm on 20 test images from the DRIvE database shows that it outperforms many other published methods and achieved an accuracy (ability to detect both vessel and non-vessel pixels) range of 0.91-0.95, a sensitivity (ability to detect vessel pixels) range of 0.91-0.95 and a specificity (ability to detect non-vessel pixels) range of 0.88-0.94.

In [8] we constructed several new fuzzy similarity measures for greyscale images that outperform the classical measures of comparison, like Root Mean Square Error or Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, in the sense of image quality evaluation. In this paper we investigate the usefulness of similarity measures for the comparison of colour images. Instead of applying the similarity measures for greyscale images component-wise, we will extend the similarity measures to colour images by applying vector morphological operators [4]. We will restrict ourselves to an investigation in the RGB colour space.

image segmentation is one of the most important steps leading to the analysis of processed data. Its main goal is to divide an image into parts that have a strong correlation with Areas of the Real world contained in the image .image Segmentation by Mathematical Morphology is a Methodology based upon the notions of Reconstruction and Gradient method of an image. Reconstruction is a very useful operator for image Filtering, Segmentation, and Feature Extraction. In this paper a new Method is proposed based on the notion of regional maxima and makes use of Sequential reconstruction algorithm and morphological Gradient .The present paper has two main sections, first is reconstruction of original image from blurred image by eliminating noise. Second is segment the image by applying morphological gradient method this method produced good result over conventional methods.

In this paper, we have considered a problem of uneven background extraction and segmentation of good, normal and bad quality fingerprint images, though we propose an algorithm based on morphological transformations. Our result shows that the proposed algorithm can successfully extract the background of good, normal and bad quality images of fingerprint and well segment the foreground area. The algorithm has been tested and executed on FvC2002 database and the performance of proposed algorithm is evaluated through subjective and objective quality measures. This algorithm gives good and promising result and found suitable to remove superfluous information without affecting the structure of fingerprint image as well as reduces the storage space for the resultant image upto 77%. Our results will be useful for precise feature extraction in automatic fingerprint recognition system.

Segmentation is one of the most challenging tasks in image processing as it requires to some extent a semantic understanding of the image. The morphological segmentation paradigm, based on the watershed transform and markers has been extremely successful, both for interactive as for automatic segmentation. Though many algorithms were proposed for watersheds in the literature, but most of them are based on binary images, for finding water catchments basins. In the present study a new method of finding watersheds on grey level image is proposed on 5X5 and 3X3 masks. To count the number of watersheds on grey levels, a new scheme is proposed for selecting the height of the peak points from where water starts falling, to the central point. The algorithm is applied on human images and textures and a good segmentation is resulted. The present study compares the proposed segmentation scheme with number of watersheds taken into account on different mask sizes.
