This paper addresses the representation of binary images by means of mathematical morphology, a relatively new nonlinear theory for imageprocessing, based on set theory. It considers images as sets (instead of vectors, as in the classical linear imageprocessing), which permits geometry-oriented transformations of the images. The new image representation described in this work, called "two steps" skeleton representation, is a natural extension of the morphological skeleton. This article will present the theoretical background of the morphologicalimage representation, deduce the new representation and show some application examples. In the end, the possibility of generalizing the "two steps" skeleton representation for multi-dimensional images will be analyzed, to extend the scope of its algebraic characteristics as much as possible. The applications of the "two steps" skeleton representation that are presented will be illustrated by computer simulations.

An algorithm for multiresolution pyramid decomposition is described. At each stage, the smoothed (''lowpass'') image is obtained by combining morphological grayscale opening and closing. Using this technique, we avoid the systematic bias of traditional approaches, as illustrated by an example. As our application, we perform image enhancement by modifying the reconstruction scheme using a morphological edge detector. The processing scheme offers a method for edge-preserving noise (speckle) suppression, in which only a minor number of multiplications is required.

Autoassociative morphological Memories (AMM) are a construct similar to Hopfield Autoassociative Memories defined on the (R, +, v, A) lattice algebra. Unlimited storage and perfect recall of noiseless real valued patterns has been proved for AMM's. However AMM's suffer from sensitivity to specific noise models, that can be characterized as erosive and dilative noise. On the other hand, Spectral Unmixing of Hyperspectral images needs the prior definition of a set of Endmembers, which correspond to material spectra lying on vertices of the minimum convex region covering the image data. These vertices can be characterized as morphologically independent patterns. We present a procedure based on the AMM noise sensitivity for Endmember detection based on this characterization.

Automatic number plate recognition(ANPR) techniques occupy a significant role in intelligent traffic management systems. Most of the existing ANPR systems do not perform well under conditions like high vehicle speed, varying illuminations, changing back ground etc. In this paper we propose an ANPR technique which efficiently solves the above issues using the stroke width transform. In our method, first we pre-process the image to remove blurring artifacts. Then the significant edges in the image are detected and a new image is formed by grouping the connecting rays. This is followed by morphologicalprocessing which detects the letters in the image. Then an appropriate Optical Character Recognizer (OCR) recovers the final result. Experimental results show that the proposed method work effectively under varying light conditions and even in the presence of shadows.

Object recognition and texture identification are the two main application of sonar imageprocessing. It consists of 3 main steps such as image segmentation, object recognition and pattern identification. Before all these steps, some of the preprocessing procedure are included such as filtering of noise, edge detection etc. Many edge detection operators are available and also a mathematical modeling called morphologicalprocessing is also very useful for edge detection. Color images generally have more visual perception over gray scale and monochrome images. Therefore in this paper the standard edge detection techniques along with the morphologicalprocessing are carried out. Comparison of the result along with the pseudo colored image proves that the morphologicalprocessing along with edge detection techniques gives more information than another one. Subjective analysis tells that, this approach mainly useful for the sonar image objects consist of larger shadow regions.

A novel scheme for implementing gray scale image hit-or-miss transform (HMT) in one optical step with only one optical correlator is presented. This scheme uses area- complementary-encoding to represent each pixel of gray scale images. Using an incoherent optical correlator to optically perform correlation and a microcomputer to perform nonlinear thresholding electrically, the area-complementary-encoding gray scale image HMT is realized for auto target recognition.

This paper presents the approach to analyze the ultrasound images of the patients suffering from Cholelithiasis. The occurrence of Cholelithiasis is the commonest biliary disease to be reported in India. Our research is aimed to apply the potential of imageprocessing in diagnosing the presence of gall bladder stones. In this paper we propose a technique, a combination of preprocessingmorphological techniques and Entropy calculation of the pixels representing gallstones in the gall bladder.

Statistical Morphology is concerned with the statistical characterization of the four morphological operations — dilation, erosion, opening and closing. By statistical characterization of a morphological operator we mean the statistical characterization of the output in terms of the statistical characteristics of the input. Characterization of operators allows us to predict the characteristics of the output of an algorithm composed of a sequence of morphological operations in terms of the statistical characteristics of the input and the sequence of morphological operators used. Furthermore, such statistical analyses of morphological algorithms is necessary for evaluating the algorithm's performance. In this paper we describe what we have learned about one way to characterize the dilation and opening morphological operators in a one dimensional setting. That is, the input to each of these operators is assumed to be binary one-dimensional. The input is modeled as a union of randomly translated discrete lines of a fixed length. The line segments can overlap and result in line segments of various lengths. Thus the final output appears as an unordered pattern of lines and gaps of various lengths. This input is characterized by giving its line and gap length distribution and the distribution of the number of line and gap segments of various lengths. The characterization of a morphological operator, therefore, entails a similar characterization of the output. There has been a recent interest in the area of statistical morphology and some results have been published in the literature. Morales and Acharya {MA92} analyzed the statistical characteristics of a morphological opening on grayscale signals perturbed by Gaussian noise. Stevenson and Arce {SA92] studied the effects of opening for a class of structuring elements. Atola, Koskinen and Neuvo [ALN93] studied the output distributions of one dimensional grayscale filtering. Costa and Haralick {CH92} came up with an empirica

The object recognition is a complex problem in the imageprocessing. Mathematical morphology is Shape oriented operations, that simplify image data, preserving their essential shape characteristics and eliminating irrelevancies. This paper briefly describes morphological operators using hypergraph and its applications for thinning algorithms. The morphological operators using hypergraph method is used to preventing errors and irregularities in skeleton, and is an important step recognizing line objects. The morphological operators using hypergraph such as dilation, erosion, opening, closing is a novel approach in imageprocessing and it act as a filter remove the noise and errors in the images.
