In our recent studies on the analysis of bone texture in the context of Osteoporosis, we could already demonstrate the great potential of the topological evaluation of bone architecture based on the Minkowski Functionals (MF) in 2D and 3D for the prediction of the mechanical strength of cubic bone specimens depicted by high resolution MRI. Other than before, we now assess the mechanical characteristics of whole hip bone specimens imaged by multi-detector computed tomography. Due to the specific properties of the imaging modality and the bone tissue in the proximal femur, this requires to introduce a new analysis method. The internal architecture of the hip is functionally highly specialized to withstand the complex pattern of external and internal forces associated with human gait. Since the direction, connectivity and distribution of the trabeculae changes considerably within narrow spatial limits it seems most reasonable to evaluate the femoral bone structure on a local scale. The Minkowski functionals are a set of morphological descriptors for the topological characterization of binarized, multi-dimensional, convex objects with respect to shape, structure, and the connectivity of their components. The MF are usually used as global descriptors and may react very sensitively to minor structural variations which presents a major limitation in a number of applications. The objective of this work is to assess the mechanical competence of whole hip bone specimens using parameters based on the ME We introduce an algorithm that considers the local topological aspects of the bone architecture of the proximal femur allowing to identify regions within the bone that contribute more to the overall mechanical strength than others.

With the increased use of on-line resources as well as the availability of digitized images, the need for efficient image retrieval algorithms is high. Research is focusing on systems that use the properties of the regions of an image in their retrieval process so that the search mechanism yields images that are more closely related to the query image. In this paper, we use the datasieve, a recursive nonlinear multiscale morphological operation, to give a scale-space decomposition of the input image. The datasieve uses efficient graph-based algorithms, and can typically compute an entire scale-space decomposition in less than half a second. We show that the 'seed nodes' obtained from the datasieve scale-tree provide a representative sample of the regions in the image. image matching is then carried out by comparing the seed node features of the query image with the seed node features of the images in the database. The results presented show the method to be promising. © 2005 IEEE.

This article introduces a new theoretical framework to describe the behavior of the Steinbuch's Lernmatrix. The properties of this old associative memory can be modeled using set theory and order relationships, analogously to morphological associative memories. The obtained results allow the Lernmatrix, four decades before its creation, to be a good alternative for pattern classification and recognition.

Flotation froth digital images collection allows their description by parameters extracted adopting imaging algorithms. Starting from froth digital images color and morphological attributes analysis, it is possible to set up statistical models able to predict mineral concentration inside the froth. The methodology has been successfully applied to about one thousand images collected during several experiments carried out in Pyhasalmi (Finland) and Garpenberg (Sweden) flotation plant.

The paper proposes a novel algorithm to dynamically define the Region of Interest (ROI) videophone application. The algorithm uses the color information Hue and Cr to find the skin-color pixels and also use range of threshold obtained from red and blue components in normalized RGB color space to remove nonskin-color pixels because the human skin tends to have a predominance of red and nonpredominance of blue. Post-processing is used to remove such noises by a morphological operator. Moreover, the algorithm performs temporal filtering to remove skin-color pixels that immediately appear from frame to frame by using object tracking process to perform as memory for collecting skin-color objects obtained from previous frame to guide the next frame. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

An established method for glaucoma diagnosis is the morphological analysis of the optic nerve head (ONH) by the scanning-laser-tomography (SLT). This analysis depends on prior manual outlining of the ONH. The first automated segmentation method that we developed is limited in its reliability by noise, non-uniform illumination and presence of blood vessels. Inspired by recent medical research we developed a new algorithm improving our previous method by segmenting in registered multimodal retinal images. The multimodal approach combines SLT-images with color fundus photographs (CFP). The first step of the algorithm. the registration. is based on gradient-image mutual information maximization using, controlled random search as the optimization procedure. The kernel of the se-mentation module consists in the anchored active contours. The initial contour is obtained from the CFP. The points the initial curve should be attracted to, the anchors, are constrained by the Hough transform applied to a morphologically processed SLT-image. The false anchors are eliminated by masking, out blood vessels that are extracted in the CFP. The method was tested on 174 multimodal image pairs. The overall performance of the system yielded 89% correctly segmented ONH. qualitatively evaluated comparing the automated contours with manual ones drawn by an experienced ophthalmologist. This represents an appreciable improvement in reliability (from 74% to 89%) compared to monomodal approach. The developed method is the basis for a promising toot for glaucoma screening.

Automated tornado detection or prediction techniques in the literature have all been based on analyzing "signatures" of tornadoes that appear in Doppler radar velocity data. Attributes of these signatures are derived from radar data, as well as the near-storm environment, and associated with observed tornadoes. This associated database has been used to train neural networks and support vector machines to automatically classify radar signatures. In this paper, we formulate the tornado prediction problem differently. Instead of devising a machine intelligence approach to classify detections, we formulate the problem as a spatio- temporal one: of estimating the probability of a tornado event at a particular spatial location within a given time window. In this paper, we also describe our initial approach to addressing this differently formulated problem. We use a least-squares methodology to estimate shear, morphological image processing to estimate gradients, fuzzy logic to generate compact measures of tornado possibility and a classification neural network to generate the final spatio-temporal probability field.

Linear Pixel Shuffling (LPS) dithering produces blue-noise-like patterns, but the placement of thresholds in a dither matrix is a result of an exact algebra, rather than iterative procedure -- as is usually the case. In this paper, we investigate the potential use of LPS for construction of color (CMYK) dithering masks. In case of LPS dithering, the addition of the same value to each mask threshold, using modular arithmetic, is equivalent to the spatial mask shift. We propose a set of three shifted color masks for C, K and Y that we construct from the original LPS mask using modular arithmetic. The main advantage of this approach is its simplicity. These shifts can be "tailored" to the statistical properties of the image and the set of new screens can be calculated on the fly. The proposed method enables creation of screens of arbitrary size, since the dithering masks are tiled automatically (actually, the masks are of unlimited size). The number of gray levels in each screen is limited by the choice of a modulus number used for mask thresholds calculation. This enables us to use a virtually unlimited number of thresholds that are not necessarily linearly related to the LPS calculated matrix values. Thus, it is relatively easy to construct a nonlinear dither screen that will compensate for any printer non-linearity.

We describe a semi-automated approach for designing morphological operators to detect image structures. We automatically combine morphological primitives from a pool to generate an enumerable family of complex morphological operators spanning a receiver operating curve (ROC). Domain knowledge can be encoded by biasing the pool with primitives; the system subsequently automatically selects and combines operators based on the joint statistics of training data. The major advantages are that the designer can focus on constructing simple operators, yet is able to rapidly combine them to yield more powerful, system-specific solutions, whose operating point can easily be changed. We illustrate the approach using birth and death processes and associated operators. Examples of video text detection are presented.

In mesothelioma, response is usually assessed by computed tomography (CT). In current clinical practice the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) or WHO, i.e., the uni-dimensional or the bi-dimensional measurements, is applied to the assessment of therapy response. However, the shape of the mesothelioma volume is very irregular and its Ion-est dimension is almost never in the axial plane. Furthermore, the sections and the sites where radiologists measure the tumor are rather subjective, resulting in poor reproducibility of tumor size measurements. We are developing an objective three-dimensional (3D) computer algorithm to automatically identify and quantify tumor volumes that are associated with malignant pleural mesothelioma to assess therapy response. The algorithm first extracts the lung pleural surface from the volumetric CT images by interpolating the chest ribs over a number of adjacent slices and then forming a volume that includes the thorax. This volume allows a separation of mesothelioma from the chest wall. Subsequently, the structures inside the extracted pleural lung surface, including the mediastinal area, lung parenchyma, and pleural mesothelioma, can be identified using a multiple thresholding technique and morphological operations. Preliminary results have shown the potential of utilizing this algorithm to automatically detect and quantify tumor volumes on CT scans and thus to assess therapy response for malignant pleural mesothelioma.
