In this paper, we discuss the origin, design, performance, and directions of the inAspect high-performance signal and image processing package for Java. The vector Signal and image processing (vSIPL) community provides a standardized API (Application Programmer Interface) for high-performance signal and image processing plus linear algebra with a C emphasis and object-based design framework. Java programmers need high performance and/or portable APIs for this broad base of functionality as well. InAspect addresses PDA's, embedded Java boards, workstations, and servers, with emphasis on embedded systems at present. Efforts include supporting integer precisions and utilizing CORDIC algorithms, both aimed at added relevance for limited-performance environments, such as present-day PDAs.

In the present work, we have analyzed the feasibility of several metal/semiconductor systems for metal additive superficial clustering. To this aim, we have selected the most common semiconductors (SnO2 and TiO2) and catalytic metal species (Pt, Pd and Nb) used for gas sensing. The application of nanoscopical techniques such as high resolution electron microscopy and the complementary use of the digital image processing (DIP) and computer image simulation (CIS) have shown the morphological characteristics of the metal additive nanoclusters attached to the semiconductor surface. While the natural distribution for Pt on semiconductor nanopowders (SnO2, TiO2...) is as metal nanoclusters, Pd atoms tend to disperse on semiconductor surface and Nb tends to diffuse into the semiconductor bulk. In this work, we show that metal nanoclustering is also possible in the latter cases under special growing conditions such as high metal additive doping or submitting the sample to thermal or reducing processes. Designing an architecture to handle large conceptual data blocks is very much needed. This paper implements a model for the shape and dimension invariant programming of arrays based on the notation of the Mathematics of Arrays (MOA) algebra. It focuses on dimension and shape invariance and their effect in parallel computmg. The MOA algebra is implemeted as a library of APIs, that contains object oriented classes implemented in C-H-. The APIs reduce the erroneous loops starts, strides, and stops used by programmers in the traditional models of handling multidimension arrays. The library defines the dimension and shape of the arrays at runtime, and gives the code of the problem at hand better chances to be automatically parallelized. An image-processing tool is implemented using the new MOA library, proving the correctness and effecicy of the model. Some video processing operations such as transformation of A v I fi-ames and motion detection schemes are implemented using the MOA library. The parallelization factors inherent in the MOA implementation are demonstrated in terms of shape polymorphism, MOA parallel architecture, data redistribution, and tiling algorithms. A new method for marine oil spills detection is presented in this paper. It is shown that morphological images analysis techniques are powerful tools to extract accurately dark spots in SAR images, which are candidates to be oil spills. The main goal is that this segmentation can be carried out with no prior knowledge about ocean conditions during the image acquisition process. Moreover, these techniques can also be useful to extract some features used in the decision process of the candidates. Due to the homogeneity of the proposed algorithm it is suitable to be implemented in a quite efficient way. This work is focused to detect oil spills produced for cleaning the tanks of the oil tankers. Nevertheless, the main idea of the proposed algorithm is that it can be used with no restrictions. © 2002 EUSIPCO.

This paper gives a short introduction into the possibility of detecting foreign bodies in food by using IR thermography. The first results shown for combinations of cherries and chocolate and berries contaminated with leaves, stalks, pedicel and thorns could be easily evaluated manually. Therefore the differing emissivity coefficients or the different heat conductivities and/or capacities are used for differentiation. Applying pulse thermography, first heat conductivity measurements of different food materials are performed. Calculating the "contrast" of possible food/contaminant combinations shows the difficulty of differentiating certain materials. A possible automatic evaluation for raisins contaminated with wooden sticks and almonds blended with stones could be shown. The power of special adapted algorithms using statistical or morphological analysis is shown to distinguish the foreign bodies from the foodstuff.

The objective of this work is to develop image processing methods for analysing the morphology of the joint cartilage with magnetic resonance imaging. Quantitative data on the morphological distribution of the joint cartilage are of great interest for both research as well as for diagnosis. The cartilage thickness provides information on the local cartilage occurance and may therefore be helpful in early and objective diagnosing degenerative cartilage changes, monitoring the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis, and controlling the success of chondroprotective treatment. In biomechanics, the thickness distribution serves to analyse the functional adaptation or the compression of the cartilage under loading and may be used for numerical simulation of load transmission in the joint. © 2002, The authors.

Our paper describes the design and implementation of a fingerprint thinning algorithm by means of morphological image processing operations, in order to improve the minutiae map involved. The final goal is to incorporate the thinning algorithm proposed with the minutiae extraction algorithm for fingerprint identification systems, developed and presented at IEEE ICCST'01.
