Summary from only given. Development of computer algorithms of OCT image processing to obtain numerical information on the state of biotissue is an important issue for clinical application of OCT. Optical scattering parameters of the tissue can serve as numerical criteria of the tissue state. In many cases, the morphological structure of tissue may be modeled as a set of uniformly scattering, locally flat layers. When describing light propagation in tissue, scattering in each layer may be characterized by a small number of parameters. Then, a set of scattering parameters of all layers can be used for adequate numerical estimation of the tissue state.

This paper addresses the representation of binary images by means of mathematical morphology, a relatively new nonlinear theory for image processing, based on set theory. It considers images as sets (instead of vectors, as in the classical linear image processing), which permits geometry-oriented transformations of the images. The new image representation described in this work, called "two steps" skeleton representation, is a natural extension of the morphological skeleton. This article will present the theoretical background of the morphological image representation, deduce the new representation and show some application examples. In the end, the possibility of generalizing the "two steps" skeleton representation for multi-dimensional images will be analyzed, to extend the scope of its algebraic characteristics as much as possible. The applications of the "two steps" skeleton representation that are presented will be illustrated by computer simulations.

In this paper we use concepts from the lattice-based theory of morphological operators and fuzzy sets to develop generalized lattice image operators that can be expressed as nonlinear convolutions that are suprema or infima of fuzzy intersection or union norms. Our emphasis (and differences with previous works) is the construction of pairs of fuzzy dilation and erosion operators that form lattice adjunctions. This guarantees that their composition will be a valid algebraic opening or closing. The power but also the difficulty in applying these fuzzy operators to image analysis is the large variety of fuzzy norms and the absence of systematic ways in selecting them. Towards this goal, we have performed extensive experiments in applying these fuzzy operators to various nonlinear filtering and image analysis tasks, attempting first to understand the effect that the type of fuzzy norm and the shape-size of structuring function have on the resulting new image operators. Further, we have developed some new fuzzy edge gradients and optimized their usage for edge detection on test problems via a parametric fuzzy norm.

This paper deals with the extraction and characterization of foreground objects in video sequences. The algorithm first computes the mosaic image representing the background information and then extracts foreground objects. In this last step, the foreground objects are progressively extracted taking into account the reliability of the contour information. This extraction step is based on morphological tools. Finally, the foreground objects are characterized by their shape, texture and motion trajectory. Moreover, some information about the temporal evolution of non rigid objects is also extracted. This feature extraction algorithm is particularly suitable for the indexing, search and retrieval applications.

Relates to a method of processing a digital image representing ribbon-shaped objects of nonuniform intensity contrasting with a background of smaller intensity, which includes an automatic segmentation phase. We have given an image segmentation algorithm, object sizes unknown, based on morphological operation. The morphological operators use adapting size apertures for different image parts The algorithm has been implemented and executed on a set of grey-scale images. © 2001 Nat. This paper presents the real-time vision system developed by Pavia University within the ENEA R.A.S. (Surface Antarctic Robot) project for the automatic driving of an intelligent snowcat able to follow the traces produced by other snowcats. A camera is used to acquire images of the scene in real-time;the image sequence is analyzed by a computer vision system which identifies the traces and produces a high level description of the scene. A further optional representation, in which black markers are superimposed onto the original acquired image, is transmitted to a human supervisor., located off-board. The low level part of image processing searches for patches of snow produced by the motion of preceding snowcats. They are characterized by a high variance and are generally darker than the rest of the scene. The algorithm uses a modified variance and morphological operators for low level analysis. The result of the first part of the processing is composed of a set of disjoint clusters representing possible traces that are then labelled and selected by the following high level processing. Even if the images used in this first phase come from a non-stabilized camera, the percentage of correct detection is about 95%.

Mathematical Morphology appears as a theory that can solve some drawbacks of the classical lineal image processing. Linear filters generate a spatial distortion from initial image, what give as result that specific algorithms are usually needed for each process with a complexity that can not be implemented in vLSI systems for Real Time image processing. Mathematical Morphology is an alternative method to overcome the inherent drawbacks of the linear processing based on the comparison of an initial image with some well known geometric figures. In this paper we present the implementation of a specific processor that computes Mathematical Morphology (MM) basic operations. Using a clock frequency of 250 MHz this processor is able to handle real time 512x512 pixels video images. Mathematical Morphology allows the non-linear processing of images and it is based on Dilation and Erosion operations using a geometric figure called Structural Element (SE). More complex image processing can be performed using these basic operations. In this implementation the structural element of 3x3 pixels was chosen. 0.6mum HGaAsIv standard cells technology, from vitesse Semiconductor Corporation, has been used achieving a logic level gate description with the possibility of migration to another technologies.

The multiscale approach derives a segmentation from the evolution of appropriate signal-descriptive features in scale-space. Features that are stable for a wide range of scales are assumed to belong to visually sensible regions. To compensate the well-known drawbacks of linear scale-spaces, the shape-preserving properties of morphological scale-space filtering are utilized. The limiting duality of morphological filters is overcome by a selfdual morphological approach considering both light and dark structures in either the opening or the closing branch of the scale-space. Reconstructive opening/closing-filters enable the scale-analysis of 2D-signals, since they are causal with respect to regional maxima/minima. This allows to identify important regions in scale-space via their extrema. Each extremum is assigned a region by a gradient watershed of the corresponding scale. Due to morphological filtering, the scale behavior of the regions is representable by a tree structure describing the spatial inter- and intra-scale relations among regions. The significance of a watershed region is automatically derived from its scale behavior by considering various attributes describing scale-dependent, morphological, and statistical properties of the region. The most significant regions form the segmentation of the image. The algorithm was verified for various medical image domains, such as cytological micrographs, bone x-rays, and cranial NMR slices.

Due to the increasing number of applications of digital image processing in the last years, we have included a course on this topic in the list of courses offered by the Electrical Engineering Department. This course has been taught at graduate level, however, undergraduate students at senior level are allowed to take it as an optional course. An educational software package has been developed to be used as a complement of the theory revised in the lectures. This package was implemented in visual Basic*, which is a visual programming language to create applications in a Windows* environment. The image to be processed can be generated using the editor included, or can be imported using images in a bmp format. The images consist of a 64×64 pixels array with 16 gray levels. This size was considered enough to perform, with educational purpose, most of the operations in the spatial and frequency domains in a reasonable amount of time. Operations available include manipulation in the space and frequency domains, such as 2-D convolution, gray level transformations, linear filtering, histogram equalization, morphological filtering, and others. Examples show how the package can be useful as a lecture aid and as a lab assistance tool. The image to be processed can be generated using the editor included, or can be imported using images in a bmp format. A graphical interface allows the user to activate available operations through a menu selection.

Color Doppler optical coherence tomography (CDOCT, also called Optical Doppler Tomography) is a noninvasive optical imaging technique, which allows for micron-scale physiological flow mapping simultaneous with morphological OCT imaging. Current systems for real-time endoscopic optical coherence tomography (EOCT) would be enhanced by the capability to visualize sub-surface blood flow for applications in early cancer diagnosis and the management of bleeding ulcers. Unfortunately, previous implementations of CDOCT have either been sufficiently computationally expensive (employing Fourier or Hilbert transform techniques) to rule out real-time imaging of flow, or have been restricted to imaging of excessively high flow velocities when used in real time. We have developed a novel Doppler OCT signal-processing strategy capable of imaging physiological flow rates in real time. This strategy employs cross-correlation processing of sequential A-scans in an EOCT image, as opposed to autocorrelation processing as described previously. To measure Doppler shifts in the kHz range using this technique, it was necessary to stabilize the EOCT interferometer center frequency, eliminate parasitic phase noise, and to construct a digital cross correlation unit able to correlate signals of megahertz bandwidth by a fixed lag of up to a few ms. The performance of the color Doppler OCT system was demonstrated in a flow phantom, demonstrating a minimum detectable flow velocity of similar to0.8 mm/s at a data acquisition rate of 8 images/second (with 480 A-scans/image) using a handheld probe. Dynamic flow as well as using it freehanded was shown. Flow was also detectable in a phantom in combination with a clinical usable endoscopic probe.
