Modern manufacturing systems call for full-rate automated inspection of produced samples. In this paper a vision-based Intelligent Perception System (IPS) is presented making automated inspection of chicken meat feasible. The IPS analyzes RGB images framing the chickens after the slaughtering and plucking process and detects defects such as burns, hematomas and blisters, along with other relevant features. The vision module, which is the core of the system, operates by first extracting the chicken body from the background, then it segments the body into its anatomic subparts. Defective areas are identified by means of morphological reconstruction. Finally, defects are classified by comparing their features against the defect description contained in a reference database.

This contribution deals with the textured images segmentation. The model exploits morphological operators and order filters properties. A morphological decomposition filters bank is built to isolate elementary patterns by decomposing the textural image characteristics. The 1 and 2 order statistic moments and the gradient means are computed in order to select the best feature component image which allows to perform the image segmentation. The method is illustrated by a real image randomly textured.

We present an impulsive noise suppression scheme using morphological filters. These filters are composed of directional morphological opening and closing both by reconstruction. A series of structuring elements with different geometrical forms in directional morphological opening and closing are investigated and different masks in grayscale image reconstruction are evaluated. The comparisons in the noise suppression and detail preservation abilities between our scheme and other nonlinear filters are studied. Investigations are also given in the reconstruction abilities by using different structuring elements in geodesic erosion and dilatation.

In the present paper, a set of robust texture features based on morphological residues of opening or closing by reconstruction is introduced. This set of features is proven much more robust to noise than those based on traditional morphological residues. The robustness to noise of this set of features is investigated in detail. An algorithm is constructed to select the most discriminating feature subset. In texture classification experiments, it is found that this feature subset bears high robustness to various noises even when the noise levels are quite high.

Morphology is a mathematical discipline that provides algebraic manipulation for images. Such a formal framework is very well suited to the design of discrete-time cellular neural networks (DTCNNs). It is shown how morphological expressions can be transformed by algebraic rules to provide an efficient DTCNN implementation for complex operations on images. In fact, most specialized DTCNNs published in literature prove to be straight morphological derivatives, as exemplified in the design of a public transport ticketing system.

We discuss the physical generation process of images as a combination of basic operations: occlusions, transparencies and contrast changes. These operations generate the essential singularities which we call junctions. We deduce a mathematical and computational model for image analysis according to which the "atoms" of the image must be "pieces of level lines joining junctions", fitting the phenomenological description of Gaetano Kanizsa (1990). A parameter free junction detection algorithm is proposed for the computation of the previously defined "atoms". Then we propose an adequate modification of the morphological filtering algorithms so that they smooth the "atoms" without altering the junctions. Finally, we give some experiments on real and synthetic images.

The problems related to image acquisition, image preprocessing, feature selection and extraction as well as clustering and identification are analyzed. A couple of features is proposed towards a better discrimination result. A neighborhood operation binary imagealgebra (NOBIA) which has only one basic operation is presented and developed. The basic operation of NOBIA is a convolusion followed by a nonlinear filtering function and then an intersection operation. The parallel architecture of an optical neighborhood operation digital image processor is designed to efficiently perform the parallel morphologicalimageprocessing algorithm provided by NOBIA, and the optical implementation hardware of the processor is discussed. Using an incoherent optical convoluter as a 3D free space interconnection device, a smart LCLv as an optical nonlinear device, and a simple optical circuit for intersection operation, an optical hardware is constituted and used to realize the basic operation of NOBIA experimentally. Any image transformation can be performed with this hardware by executing the basic operation repeatedly according to proper iterative programming.
