The classification and the count of white blood cells in microscopy images allows the in vivo assessment of a wide range of important hematic pathologies (i.e., from presence of infections to leukemia). Nowadays, the morphological cell classification is typically made by experienced operators. Such a procedure presents undesirable drawbacks: slowness and it presents a not standardized accuracy since it depends on the operator's capabilities and tiredness. Only few attempts of partial/full automated systems based on image-processing systems are present in literature and they are still at prototype stage. This paper presents a methodology to achieve an automated detection and classification of leucocytes by microscope color images. The proposed system firstly individuates in the blood image the leucocytes from the others blood cells, then it extracts morphological indexes and finally it classifies the leucocytes by a neural classifier in Basophil, Eosinophil, Lympocyte, Monocyte and Neutrophil.

The objective of this paper is to automate the welding process by automating the task of weld line detection. A comparative evaluation between digital imageprocessing technique and artificial neural networks to detect the center line of the weld piece has been analyzed. In the imageprocessing technique, the image has been acquired and image pre-processing has been done in the form of RGB Thresholding, filtering, Binary thresholding, and morphological transformations to attain the center line. In utilizing artificial neural networks, a database of images for training and testing have been fed into the network with different training algorithms as well as different training ratios and learning rate, and the performance criteria of mean square error has been evaluated.

A new vector-wise scheme for the gradient estimation and edge detection in noisy color images is proposed. In color images, different types of noise may corrupt the image. To reduce the effects of noise in the gradient estimation, we introduce the RCMG-Median-Mean estimator. RCMG-Median-Mean is a combination of the robust color morphological gradient (RCMG), the median and the mean filters to accurately estimate both the gradient magnitude and the gradient direction at each pixel of a noisy color image. The simulation results show that the proposed method more accurately estimates the true gradient vector, has better corner detection and leads to better continuous edges with less computational complexity than the RCMG method.

morphological filters provide a very useful theoretical and practical tool for shape or size oriented imageprocessing. According to definition of increase and idempotence, the well known morphological filters are opening, closing, opening, close-opening and their alternating series such as alternating sequential filters. In this article, four new kinds of morphological filters called composite morphological filters (CMFs) formed by the combination of opening and closing with image component itself are presented. Part of the CMFs in MMD procedure are used to get image components according to texture size distributions. Finally, an attempt is made to classify different textures using a feature taken from decomposed images by CMFs.

This paper presents a systematic design of the integer-to-integer invertible quaternionic multiplier based on the block-lifting structure and pipelined embedded processor of the given multiplier using distributed arithmetic (DA) as a block of M-band linear phase paraunitary filter banks (LP PUFB) based on the quaternionic algebra (Q-PUFB). A bank Q-PUFB based on the DA block-lifting structure reduces the number of rounding operations and has a regular layout, and can be implemented on the FPGA-based devices as integer-to-integer transform. Compared to general-purpose Q-PUFB obtained using lifting factorization, it needs less lifting steps and the given DA-based Q-PUFBs have less number of rounding operations and this property is useful for the lossless-to-lossy (L2L) image coding. Furthermore our DA-based 8-channel LP Q-PUFBs presented superior coding results on the PSNR than the corresponding filter banks, especially for image with relatively strong highpass components.

In this paper, a quantitative evaluation methodology for morphological filters is presented. The goal of this evaluation scheme is to measure simultaneously the ability of morphological filters in edge sharpness preservation and noise suppression. A general morphological gradient criterion is proposed to divide an image into a series of regions according to its local spatial activity levels. The local mean-square-error (MSE) and local mean-absolute-error (MAE) are used to verify and compare performances of different tested filters. Several efficient and simple structured detail-preserving and noise-removal morphological filters are proposed and tested on simulated images by this scheme to prove its efficiency. For real imageprocessing procedures, a combined filter structure is proposed to improve filter results.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is the problem for long-standing diabetes and the major cause for visual loss is because of variations in blood vessels of the retina. vision loss is due to DR is preventable with regular checkups at the earlier stages. The presence of exudates is the basic signs of DR. Hence, exudates detection becomes a major problem-solving task, in which retinal images plays a vital role. In this paper, a technique is proposed depending on morphological closing operations which are in imageprocessing is used to identify exudates from retinal image. At the starting phase, the retinal image must be preprocessed, where at first the image which is in RGB color format is altered to the image of HSI color format and on Intensity-band of HSI color format average filter is performed to reduce noise and subsequently contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization is performed to normalize the image. In subsequent phase, exudates are identified using morphological closing operation and then Nilblack's thresholding is applied. On comparing the results, the proposed technique got better performance than the existing technique.

Human face detection plays a vital role in many applications like video surveillance, managing a face image database, human computer interface among others. This paper proposes a robust algorithm for face detection in still color images that works well even in a crowded environment. The algorithm uses conjunction of skin color histogram, morphologicalprocessing and geometrical analysis for detecting human faces. To reinforce the accuracy of face detection, we further identify mouth and eye regions to establish the presence/absence of face in a particular region of interest.
