This report presents a technique of decomposing an arbitrary binary image into the union of rectangles so that the number of rectangles becomes as small as possible. This decomposition is referred as adaptive rectangular decomposition. Decomposing a binary image into objects with a same basic shape but with different sizes is familiar as morphological skeleton decomposition. To implement adaptive rectangular decomposition, we generalize the discrete version of morphological skeleton decomposition by replacing a sequences of disks {nB}, n = 0,1, ··· with a structuring element sequence {Bn}, where Bn = Bn-1 ⊕ Gn-1 and Gn is called a generator. A good selection of each generator in a generator sequence {Gn} makes a compact representation of a given binary image. In adaptive rectangular decomposition, we restrict each generator Gn by one of only two objects;the vertical 2-pixel line v and the horizontal 2-pixel line H. The adaptive rectangular decomposition algorithm selects the best sequence {Gn} using dynamic programming (DP) technique. In some experiments, we compared adaptive rectangular decomposition with other types of decomposition in the viewpoint of the time cost of morphological operations by decomposed structuring elements (decomposed binary images). Experimental results show that the time cost of the operations by the structuring elements represented by adaptive rectangular decompositions is smaller than the case of other types of decompositions.

Mathematical morphology (MM) appears as a theory that can solve some drawbacks of the classical lineal image processing. Linear filters generate a spatial distortion from initial image, what gives as result that specific algorithms are usually needed for each process with a complexity that cannot be implemented in vLSI systems for real time image processing. MM overcome the inherent drawbacks of the linear processing based on the comparison of an initial image with some well-known geometric figures. In this paper we present the implementation of a specific processor that computes MM basic operations. Using a clock frequency of 250 MHz this processor is able to handle real time 512 X 512 pixels video images. MM allows non-linear processing of images and it is based on dilation and erosion operations using a geometric figure called structural element (SE). More complex image processing can be performed using these two basic operations. In this implementation the SE of 3 X 3 pixels was chosen. 0.6 mum HGaAs standard cells technology, from vitesse Semiconductor Corporation, has been used achieving a logic level gate description with the possibility of migration to another technologies. Seed morphological characteristics and weight are important evaluation indicators of seed quality, and they are closely related to seed germination rate and crop yield. In order to detect the quality of melon seeds and improve the efficiency of melon production, a melon seed morphological feature extraction and weight detection system was developed. The light source unit with a ring structure consisted of high power LED lamps, providing stable light for the system;The image acquisition unit collected color images of melon seeds;The weighing unit weighed the weight of melon seeds in real time;The control processing unit processed seed images real-time, triggered the image acquisition unit to collect image and control the collection speed of seeds images, controlled weighing unit to work, and saved seeds image, weight and processing results. The system can extract the number, area, perimeter, long diameter, short diameter and weight of melon seeds. After testing of the system, the detection accuracy of melon seeds number was 100%, detection relative errors of seeds weight, seed perimeter, length and width were less than 5%, and the detection relative error of melon seed area was less than 10%. The results show that the developed melon seed morphological feature extraction and weight detection system can meet the actual needs of melon seed production.

The quality of ultrasound images is limited by granular speckle noise. This paper presents two nonlinear restoration methods based on multiscale signal decomposition. Initially, signal-dependent multiplicative speckle noise is transformed to additive noise by a logarithm point operation. Rectangular coordinates are obtained by a polar coordinate transform of the sector image. The lateral distortions require filter masks that are locally adapted to the ellipsoidal speckle spots. The images are decomposed into frequency bands and morphological scales by a Laplacian pyramid and self-dual morphological filtering, respectively. In both cases the subbands are filtered by special rank-order/morphological filters depending on lateral and radial resolutions of the ultrasound image. In case of Laplacian subbands, multistage filters consider elongated structures by unidirectional median filtering and subsequent rank-order operations. morphological scales contain size-dependent speckle-shaped objects and are filtered by a novel self-dual reconstruction operator that equally treats noise resulting from amplified and attenuated reflected sound-waves. The performance of the despeckle algorithms is demonstrated for different types of B-mode sector scans. Both methods show significant noise reduction capability preserving object contours due to nonlinear filtering of the subbands.

In this paper, we have introduced a generalized block-lifting structure using the 2-D CORDIC algorithm as a block of 4-band linear phase paraunitary filter banks (LP PUFB) based on the quaternionic algebra (Q-PUFB) for the lossy-to-lossless image coding. A bank Q-PUFB based on the 2-D CORDIC block-lifting structure reduces the number of rounding operations and has a regular layout. Since the block-lifting structures with rounding operations can implement the integer-to-integer transform (Q-PUFB). The parallel-pipelined efficient architecture ((PE)-E-2_Q-PUFB) has been proposed. The low latency separable image processing is implemented in the given architecture.

This paper presents the study of vocal videostroboscopic videos to detect morphological pathologies using a combination of motion information and segmentation. The motion permits us to obtain the keyframes of total (or minimum) closure and maximum opening and to have the initialization for the segmentation process. The segmentation is made analyzing the image textures applying Gabor filtering. After this stage, where the pathology is (if it exists) is delimited using derivative techniques and interpolation. Finally, the pathology is localized and we can extract some features of each fold.

A versatile image processing technique used in a system can be very instrumental for radiologist in detecting and diagnosing subtle signs with more accuracy and reliability than distinctive screening programs. In this paper, an algorithm based on morphological processing for enhancing architecture distortion alias subtle signs patterns in digital mammograms is suggested. The results demonstrate that proposed method has improved contrast both in objective as well as subjective manner. The proposed method in comparison to other methods gives better results in terms of various quality metrics used in algorithm.

This paper presents an approach for early diagnostic of Breast Cancer using the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT), which detect micro-calcifications in digital mammograms. The approach follows four basic strategies, namely, image denoising, band suppression, morphological transformation and inverse complex wavelet transform. The procedure of image denoising is carried out with a thresholding algorithm that computes recursively the optimal threshold at each level of wavelet decomposition. In order to maximize the detection a morphological conversion is proposed and applied to the high-frequencies subbands of the wavelet transformation. This procedure is applied to a set of digital mammograms from the Mammography image Analysis Society (MIAS) database. Experimental results show that the proposed denoising algorithm and morphological transformation in combination with the DT-CWT procedure performs better than previous reported approaches.

Recovering dehazed image from the single underwater image has always been a challenging task. Inspired from dark channel prior, we extend it further to dehaze the underwater images using a single color channel. The red color component undergoes maximum attenuation on account of the longest wavelength and dominates the dark channel prior in the underwater scenario. We developed the algorithm based on the red color channel, and obtained depth map using morphological operation. The proposed approach significantly restores the color, minimizes the effect of haze and improves the contrast. Experimental results based on qualitative and quantitative analysis exhibits that the proposed method performs efficiently as compared to existing dehazing algorithms.

The paper proposes a novel Extensible Markup Language (XML) based format called ART-ML that aims at supporting the interoperability and the reuse of models of blood flow, mass transport and plaque formation, exported by ARTool. ARTool is a platform for the automatic processing of various image modalities of coronary and carotid arteries. The images and their content are fused to develop morphological models of the arteries in easy to handle 3D representations. The platform incorporates efficient algorithms which are able to perform blood flow simulation. In addition atherosclerotic plaque development is estimated taking into account morphological, flow and genetic factors. ART-ML provides a XML format that enables the representation and management of embedded models within the ARTool platform and the storage and interchange of well-defined information. This approach influences in the model creation, model exchange, model reuse and result evaluation.
