Recent years, both the domestic and international frontiers made headway in the realm of intelligent navigation for ships, so vision-based ship monitoring systems and smart ships had a great development prospect. However, in the night-time environment at sea, the images usually have low contrast, low visibility and generous noise splash. Deep learning algorithms are affected by these problems, which not only limit the detecting and recognizing capability but also bring the unstable elements in the aspect of safety. To solve these problems, this study constructs paired Maritime-Low-Light datasets and build the MLL-ResUnet (Maritime low-light-ResUnet) model based on the ResUnet model to enhance nighttime images at sea. The CurveNLU module is designed, which adjusts the image brightness curve to make an adaptive adjustment of the image brightness for achieving the image enhancement tasks. Lastly, to consider the image output effect and model light-weighting, we introduce the ORSnet (Original Resolution Subnetwork) module and the GhostConv module. In the experimental part, the MML dataset is applied in the several other state-of-the-art image enhancement algorithms and the proposed algorithm. Based on the compared results, we find that the model proposed achieves impressive results. Specifically, it scores 26.865 and 0.84 in the PSNR and SSMI quality evaluation indexes, surpassing the performance of other algorithms. There is strong evidence to support that the proposed model not only ensures the authenticity of the output image, but also has a certain guarantee for the speed of calculation. Overall, the MLL-ResUnet model meets the requirements of the ship monitoring system and enables real-time monitoring of ship movement at night at sea. © 2023 ACM.

We describe an object replacement approach whereby privacy-sensitive objects in videos are replaced by abstract cartoons taken from clip art. Our approach uses a combination of computer vision, deep learning, and image processing techniques to detect objects, abstract details, and replace them with cartoon clip art. We conducted a user study (N=85) to discern the utility and effectiveness of our cartoon replacement technique. The results suggest that our object replacement approach preserves a video's semantic content while improving its privacy by obscuring details of objects.

The development of the concepts within 3DVIEWNIX and of the software system 3DVIEWNIX itself dates back to the 1970s. Since then, a series of software packages for Computer Assisted Visualization and Analysis (CAVA) of images came out from our group, 3DVIEWNIX released in 1993, being the most recent, and all were distributed with source code. CAVASS, an open source system, is the latest in this series, and represents the next major incarnation of 3DVIEWNIX. It incorporates four groups of operations: image processing (including ROI, interpolation, filtering, segmentation, registration, morphological, and algebraic operations), VISUALIZATION (including slice display, reslicing, MIP, surface rendering, and volume rendering), MANIPULATION (for modifying structures and surgery simulation), ANALYSIS (various ways of extracting quantitative information). CAVASS is designed to work on all platforms. Its key features are: (1) most major CAVA operations incorporated;(2) very efficient algorithms and their highly efficient implementations;(3) parallelized algorithms for computationally intensive operations;(4) parallel implementation via distributed computing on a cluster of PCs;(5) interface to other systems such as CAD/CAM software, ITK, and statistical packages;(6) easy to use GUI. In this paper, we focus on the image processing operations and compare the performance of CA VASS with that of ITK. Our conclusions based on assessing performance by utilizing a regular (6 MB), large (241 MB), and a super (873 MB) 3D image data set are as follows: CAVASS is considerably more efficient than ITK, especially in those operations which are computationally intensive. It can handle considerably larger data sets than ITK. It is easy and ready to use in applications since it provides an easy to use GUI. Content-based music analysis has drawn much attention due to the rapidly growing digital music market. We introduce a method for determining approximate chord-sequence representations of songs, purely from the chromagram of songs and without assuming any prior music knowledge. Each song is represented by a sequence of states, which represent the different chords, of an underlying Hidden Markov Model (HMM). The method is then applied to the problems of cover song identification and music summarization by robust and local sequence alignment algorithms. The proposed method has a number of advantages, including elimination of the unreliable beat estimation step and the ability to match parts of songs. The invariance of key transpositions among cover songs is achieved by cyclically rotating the chromatic domain of a chromagram. Our data driven method is shown to be robust to reordering, inserting, deleting parts of songs, and provide superior performance compared with other known methods for cover song identification.

Quantifying the accuracy of segmentation and manual delineation of organs, tissue types and tumors in medical images is a necessary measurement that suffers from multiple problems. One major shortcoming of all accuracy measures is that they neglect the anatomical significance or relevance of different zones within a given segment. Hence, existing accuracy metrics measure the overlap of a given segment with a ground-truth without any anatomical discrimination inside the segment. For instance, if we understand the rectal wall or urethral sphincter as anatomical zones, then current accuracy measures ignore their significance when they are applied to assess the quality of the prostate gland segments. In this paper, we propose an anatomy-aware measurement scheme for segmentation accuracy of medical images. The idea is to create a "master gold" based on a consensus shape containing not just the outline of the segment but also the outlines of the internal zones if existent or relevant. To apply this new approach to accuracy measurement, we introduce the anatomy-aware extensions of both Dice coefficient and Jaccard index and investigate their effect using 500 synthetic prostate ultrasound images with 20 different segments for each image. We show that through anatomy-sensitive calculation of segmentation accuracy, namely by considering relevant anatomical zones, not only the measurement of individual users can change but also the ranking of users' segmentation skills may require reordering.

In the realm of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) manufacturing, the alignment process is pivotal for ensuring the functional integrity of the final product. Traditional image measurement techniques, while foundational, often fall short of achieving the high degree of accuracy and precision necessary for today's complex PCB designs. This research presents a novel approach that significantly enhances measurement accuracy through the application of optimized image processing techniques. By leveraging advanced algorithms within the OpenCV library, we introduce a methodology that accurately transforms pixel coordinates into real-world measurements, crucial for precise PCB alignment. Our technique employs edge detection algorithms such as Canny, Sobel, and Prewit filters, combined with a machine learning model that adapts to variations in real-time imaging conditions. The study delineates the development of a user-friendly graphical interface that streamlines the measurement process, making it accessible for practical industrial application. Results from experimental validations indicate a substantial improvement in measurement precision, with a demonstrable reduction in alignment errors compared to conventional methods. This leap forward not only promises to elevate the standards of PCB manufacturing but also opens avenues for similar advancements in other domains where image measurement is essential. The implications of this work are far-reaching, with the potential to significantly boost the efficiency and reliability of electronic manufacturing processes globally.

New developments in production technology increasingly focus on hybrid microsystems. Especially for systems with movable components, the process step of assembly is mandatory. In general, the accuracy of positioning of the parts has to be better than 1 mu m. This makes specialized and automated production equipment necessary, which can lead to a conflict with the aim of flexibility of the range of products. Design for manufacturing is a well known remedy. Assembly aids are common practice today. These features of the workpieces bear no functionality for the end product but considerably ease certain process steps. By standardization of assembly aids generalized production equipment free from product-specific features could be developed. In our contribution, we demonstrate the photogrammetric determination of the positions of workpieces without reference to their exterior shape, using circular fiducial marks of 150 mu m in diameter. The surface properties of the workpieces, however, still have an influence on image formation. As an example, the marks may be hidden by local specular reflections. A solution to this problem is to add an exclusive optical property to the fiducial marks to get an image with high contrast against the surface of the workpiece. In biology and medicine samples are stained with fluorescing dyes to enhance the contrast in optical microscopy. In fluorochromes, light of a characteristic wavelength is emitted after the absorption of light with a shorter wavelength. In our experiments we added a fluorochrome to a common photoresist and coated the surface of the workpiece with a thin layer thereof. Using photolithography as a patterning technique we generated fiducial marks with structures down to 25 mu m. These marks can be identified by their characteristic emission wavelength under short-wavelength illumination. Constant complicating of wars due to considerable development of military weapon and moving to new generation of warfare led to a significant change in means of it. More and more armed forces involve AI into solving a wide range of tasks, since modern war produces a lot of data which need to be processed and analyzed. In this work, an effective military vehicles marking detection algorithm was developed in order to make it possible to determine the ownership of military equipment based on its marking. It uses pure image processing algorithms instead of involving neural networks, like in R-CNN model or its derivatives. As a result, the algorithm does not require a huge dataset of marking templates and time for network training and can be applied immediately. The algorithm is not bound to a specific marking pattern and can be applied to any. Also it is designed for detecting military marking without reference to objects. As a result, the algorithm can be easily integrated with other image processing systems, e.g. military vehicles detection. © 2023 IEEE.

There are two broad classes of colour constancy algorithms: statistical and physics-based. The former attempt to correlate the. statistics of the colours in an image with statistical knowledge about light and surfaces. If there is good colour diversity in a scene then the statistical approach often. works well. The latter, physics-based algorithms are founded on an understanding of how physical processes such as specularities and interreflection manifest themselves in images. The theory behind physics-based algorithms is both elegant and powerful. Indeed, colour constancy becomes possible even in scenes with as few as two surfaces.. Unfortunately the theory rarely translates into practice;most physics-based algorithms do not work outside the lab. In this paper we combine both statistical and physical knowledge in a new colour constancy algorithm. First, we observe that, statistically, the chromaticities of most illuminants are tightly clustered around the Planckian locus. Second, we make use of the physics-based dichromatic model of image formation. This model predicts that the chromaticities corresponding to a single convex, uniformly coloured, surface fall along a line in chromaticity space. This line is spanned by the body chromaticity (the colour of the surface) and the interface chromaticity (the colour of the shiny part of the surface i.e. the colour of the light). Simply by intersecting the dichromatic chromaticity line with the illuminant locus our algorithm arrives at an estimate of illumination. Remarkably, (yet by definition) our algorithm can estimate the colour of the light even when there is just a single surface in a scene (the lowest colour diversity possible). Moreover, and more importantly, experiments on real images demonstrate that estimation accuracy can be very good.

Fingerprints are often claimed as the safest measurable human trait. As one can observe they are commonly used in many different solutions. Nowadays they are applied for instance in financial institutions where clients can confirm their identities with fingerprints. These biometrics are the kind of the password that no one can lost or forget. An approach to extract fingerprints features with artificial neural network and image processing algorithms is presented in this work. Soft computing methods are becoming more popular. It leads to their usage in the human recognition procedures. In the case of the algorithm presented in this paper, the results from neural network are confirmed by Crossing-Number (CN) algorithm. The two-step confirmation ensures more precise results than obtained with each of them separately. The final stage of the algorithm is minutiae extraction and marking them in the analyzed image. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
