High-resolution optical inspection techniques typically require expensive imaging systems. One possible approach for reducing the overall cost of such systems is to combine optics of limited performance with digital image restoration techniques. In this contribution, we introduce a new hybrid system based on the combination of a field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA), a large telecentric lens with strong field dependent chromatic aberrations and different types of object-adapted projections for 2D and 3D inspection tasks. The optical design tries to minimize cost and weight by replacing the - typically very large - first refractive group of the object-sided telecentric lens by one thin diffractive optical element. This approach can correct the field-dependent aberrations very well. Unfortunately, strong chromatic aberrations are unavoidable. For restoration, we use digital image processing by means of advanced deconvolution algorithms. The necessary number of operations for the strong field-dependent aberrations is extremely high. We combine algorithmic approaches (convolutions using singular-value decomposition) and parallelization directly on the FPGA to achieve live restoration (15 Hz) for a custom-built image sensor with three megapixels. The power consumption is low and a compact processing unit is realized. This hybrid (digital-optical) imaging system is used for 2D- and 3D inspection based on adaptive triangulation. One approach is based on inverse fringe projection. Ray-tracing based on the sensor setup and a reference CAD-model of the part to be tested is used for computing a fringe mask. This mask is inscribed on a spatial light modulator, which then projects the fringes towards the object. If the object under test is without faults, high-frequency equidistant straight-line fringes will result on the image sensor and low height measurement uncertainties at low lateral resolutions, even for non-cooperative objects, are achievable. In recent years, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) has attracted growing attention from experts and scholars. Edge-based traffic sign image segmentation is a key technology in the field of traffic sign recognition. Therefore, traffic sign edge detection technology is of vital importance. Edge detection is an image processing technology, which can quickly and accurately extract image edge information. Thus, improving the accuracy of edge detection has become a significant research direction. Furthermore, due to the influence of the complexity of external factors on actual images, the conventional edge detection algorithms present insufficient adaptability, so the improved performance of the operators needs to be further investigated. This paper mainly studies several traditional edge detection techniques and applies them to traffic sign maps using MATLAB. After comparing the results, we proposed an improved Canny algorithm and analyzes its applicability in traffic sign edge detection under different external interference factors.

Blindness is very common and unendurable disability among many disabilities. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), there are 285 million visually impaired people [1]. The proposed vi (visually Impaired) Assistant System is developed to assist the visually impaired people have four modules which are obstacle recognition, obstacle avoidance, indoor and outdoor navigation, and real-time location sharing. The proposed system is a combination of smart glove and smart-phone application which works fine in the low light level also. The smart glove as a part of the proposed solution is used to detect and avoid obstacles and to enable visually impaired people to identify the world around them. The smart-phone-based obstacle and object detection is used to detect various objects in the surrounding. The system also provides seamless indoor navigation implemented using available Wi-Fi access points. The system also provides security to the blind via real-time location sharing in an outdoor environment. Our proposed system is reliable, affordable, practical and feasible.

This paper demonstrates a decentralized strategy of an arithmetic mean-based navigation algorithm for a group of mobile robots. The aim is to have them navigate through an unknown environment surrounded by obstacles to detect and follow multiple invading intruders. The suggested navigation strategy ensures that the mobile robots safely manoeuvre around surrounding obstacles and avoid collision. Furthermore, a probability of danger algorithm is introduced to ensure that all the intruders present in the environment are followed by at least one robot when they are observed at any time t *. The mobile robots follow the intruders' movements on the basis of their pixel values using a Microsoft Kinect sensor. A low pixel value means that the intruder is far away, and a high pixel value represents the close proximity of the intruder to the mobile robots. All the algorithms and image processing techniques are implemented and tested in a Webots simulation environment using C programming language. The results show the success of the proposed arithmetic mean-based navigation and probability of danger-based intruder-following algorithm.

The use of intelligent and automated license plate recognition system is much needed in the today's real-time processing age. Also, the growing number of vehicles demands a robust and reliable system which can not only detect the license plate from a vehicle but also provide the text output of the characters printed on the plate. Although a number of systems have already been devised for this function, only a handful of them have been able to implement OCR (Optical Character Recognition). The system proposed in this paper has been implemented using Haar cascade for localisation, filtering algorithms and PyTesseract for OCR. This system has been implemented keeping in mind that the characters are in a single line as opposed to some cars having two lined license plates. Different types of printed fonts and lighting conditions make this process hard, but the proposed system is able to overcome these challenges.

Catenary is an important part of electrified railway, and its geometric parameters are important parameters reflecting the safe and stable operation of locomotives. With the improvement of its speed, there are higher requirements for high-accuracy and real-time detection of geometric parameters of catenary. The existing systems have problems of long sampling interval, low real-time performance, and light-sensitive. Aiming at the actual requirement of dynamic measurement of catenary geometric parameters, a non-contact catenary geometric parameter detection system based on machine vision was developed. Firstly, a measurement model based on high-power line lasers and high-resolution area cameras was established to meet the application requirements. The measurement principle of the system was analyzed and the detailed formulas were deduced. Secondly, image difference, laser spot roundness analysis and other image processing algorithms were used to quickly and accurately detect the characteristics of laser points on the contact line with complex background. Based on the measurement model and algorithms mentioned above, the hardware and software platform of the system were built, and fast image acquisition and processing was realized by using multi-thread programming technology on high-performance industrial computer, which solved the problems of long sampling interval and low real-time performance during the measurement. Real-time image storage and display and preservation of detection results were realized in the software. Finally, a preliminary experiment was performed on the prototype, and the accuracy of the measurement results was analyzed. Experiment results showed that the system works stably and has high accuracy, which meets the practical application requirements.

Recently, impressively growing efforts have been devoted to the challenging task of facial age estimation. The improvements in performance achieved by new algorithms are measured on several benchmarking test databases with different characteristics to check on consistency. While this is a valuable methodology in itself, a significant issue in the most age estimation related studies is that the reported results lack an assessment of intrinsic system uncertainty. Hence, a more in-depth view is required to examine the robustness of age estimation systems in different scenarios. The purpose of this paper is to conduct an evaluative and comparative analysis of different age estimation systems to identify trends, as well as the points of their critical vulnerability. In particular, we investigate four age estimation systems, including the online Microsoft service, two best state-of-the-art approaches advocated in the literature, as well as a novel age estimation algorithm. We analyse the effect of different internal and external factors, including gender, ethnicity, expression, makeup, illumination conditions, quality and resolution of the face images, on the performance of these age estimation systems. The goal of this sensitivity analysis is to provide the biometrics community with the insight and understanding of the critical subject-, camera- and environmental-based factors that affect the overall performance of the age estimation system under study.

Colored satellite images are difficult to segment due to their low illumination, dense features, uncertainties, etc. Renyi's entropy is a famous entropy criterion that provides excellent outputs in bi-level thresholding based segmentation. But such method suffers lack of accuracy, inefficiency, and instability when extended to perform color image multilevel thresholding. Therefore, a new color image multilevel segmentation strategy based on Bat algorithm and Renyi's entropy is proposed in this paper to determine the optimal threshold values more efficiently. The experiments are conducted on four real satellite images and two well-known test images at different threshold levels. The study shows that the proposed algorithm obtains good quality and adequate segmented results more effectively as compared to other multilevel thresholding algorithms such as Renyi's-PSO and Otsu-PSO.

In the embedded computer vision field, the stereo vision matching using two cameras can identify the distance of the surrounding environment at low prices. Recently, CNN based artificial intelligence algorithms have been showing good results with high accuracy. However, huge network size and slow computation prevent them used in embedded edge systems. In this paper, a CNN algorithm to use reduced parameters to find a accurate disparity map of stereoscopic images based on Siamese network is proposed. The proposed method performs network training through GPU-based parallel operation and produces better results than the existing one using fewer parameters.

image style transfer is a classic image editing task which aims to transfer arbitrary visual styles to content images. In recent years, it has been revealed that a well-trained convolutional neural network with sufficient labeled data is powerful to deal with the style transfer problem. Thanks to the recent advances in the analysis of neural style transfer, the image style transfer can be cast as a problem of distribution alignment. In this paper, we propose to solve this issue by incorporating the theory of optimal transport in a simple and intuitive way. The main component of our style transfer method is an optimal transportation map, which is derived from the Monge-Kantorovicth theory of mass transportation, to perform the alignment process from the content image to the style image. We compare the generated stylized images with a number of representative algorithms to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We also show that our results are visually more consistent and well-stylized simultaneously. © 2019 Association for Computing Machinery.
