Denoising using Discrete Wavelet Transform is very popular in imageprocessing. The main tasks of this kind of approach include the image decomposition into random sub-bands and the Wavelet coefficients extraction. In this paper a GPU parallel algorithm to compute and extract Wavelet coefficients is proposed. As preprocessing we use the Donoho method to study the amount of noise present in the images;while for suppression or shrinkage criterion we suggest the Garrote threshold. The selection process in this work was performed through two algorithms: Hard and Non-Negative Garrote Thresholding. Our work-frame uses a parallel approach to extract Wavelet coefficients at level of sub-bands, so that significant improvements are achieved over the CPU version, which a speedup gain of around four times with respect to the serial version. Some tests and numerical experiments show the efficiency and the quality obtained using the proposed method.

In our paper, we proposed the insertion sort circuit of the median filter for the corrupted image. The median filter can be overcome the salt-pepper noise in the figure. We indicate the middle pixel value in a mask window of the figure to overcome the salt-pepper noise occurred. The method concept is easy and efficient. We use the Altera DE2-115 development board to verify our insertion sort circuits. We put the noise image in the SDRAM on the board, and filtered the image by the proposed circuits. In the result, we display the picture on the screen to show the processed image.

Design and implementation of smart vision systems often involve the mapping of complex imageprocessingalgorithms into efficient, real-time implementations on multicore platforms. In this paper, we describe a novel design tool that is developed to address this important challenge. A key component of the tool is a new approach to hierarchical dataflow scheduling that integrates a global scheduler and multiple local schedulers. The local schedulers are lightweight modules that work independently. The global scheduler interacts with the local schedulers to optimize overall memory usage and execution time. The proposed design tool is demonstrated through a case study involving an image stitching application for large scale microscopy images.

With the increasing intelligent demand of substations, more and more machine vision technologies are applied in smart substations. This paper deals with the power cabinet door-opening state recognition based on edge feature extraction. Firstly, the substation patrol robot with machine vision is introduced, and the image acquirement and main processing flowchart including image line segment fitting of the power cabinet door-opening state is presented. Secondly, main algorithms, such as grey scale, image denoising, edge feature detection and Hough transform, used in the image feature extraction are provided. Finally, the proposed power cabinet door state recognition is implemented with real image of typical terminal box state, and the experimental results show that the proposed technology can identify the power cabinet door-opening state with accuracy as high as 99%.

The postural assessment of an individual can be related to the angles generated from the markers of two bone references, at any time during routine movements, such as walking, sitting and standing. Postural evaluation assistance systems are commonly developed from the analysis of the gait. However, in this study an algorithm was developed based on activities of sit-to-stand as these activities are pre-requisite for the other daily activities. Based on this context the objective of this study is to develop an automated algorithm to identify a group of nine anatomical landmarks, using a postural assessment protocol of the sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit activities from a lateral view, allowing the extraction of information necessary for the protocol anytime during the execution of the activity. The proposed algorithm employs digital imageprocessing techniques such as image segmentation and the prediction of the occluded points for identification of anatomical landmarks in patients through reflective markers. The results obtained show that the algorithm has an accuracy of 95.1% for the angular values calculated from the obtained videos. The proposed algorithm assists the physical therapists in achieving a quantitative method for monitoring the evolution of the patient's posture and allows periodic reviews to be made more quickly, accurately and throughout the physiotherapeutic treatment.

The paper discusses the design and validation of a novel wearable conformal ultrasound array with integrated imaging and modulation capabilities. A custom 64-element linear PZT array with 5 MHz resonance frequency was used for imaging. An 8-element linear array using larger PZT elements for efficient power transfer was also integrated on the wearable probe to enable image-guided neural modulation. Full-wave simulations were used to estimate the generated pressure field at various depths. Vagus nerve modulation using low intensity focused ultrasound is an important field that is targeted in this study, so the relevant focal depth (10-20 mm) was considered for both imaging and modulation array designs. A carotid artery localization algorithm was developed to easily locate the vagus nerve for imaging and modulation. A curvature estimation method based on flexible strain sensors integrated on the probe was also developed for real-time optimization of the imageprocessing and beamforming algorithms. Preliminary measurement and characterization results of a rigid prototype show promising results with similar to 2.5 MHz bandwidth.

This paper proposes a novel configuration data compression technique for coarse-grained reconfigurable architectures (CGRAs). The proposed technique is based on a multicast configuration technique called RoMultiC, which reduces the configuration time by multicasting the same data to multiple PEs(processing Elements) with two bit-maps. Scheduling algorithms for an optimizing the order of multicasting have been proposed. In general, configuration data for CGRAs can be divided into some fields like machine code formats. The proposed scheme confines a part of fields for multicasting so that the possibility of multicasting more PEs can be increased. This paper analyzes algorithms to find a configuration pattern which maximizes the number of multicasted PEs. We implemented the proposed scheme to CMA (Cool Mega Array), a straight forward CGRA as a case study. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves 40.0% smaller configuration for an imageprocessing application at maximum. Furthermore, it achieves 35.6% reduction of the power consumption for the configuration with a negligible area overhead.

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) plays an important role in gastrointestinal (GI) tract observation and disease diagnosis. However, due to the limited illumination and complex environment in GI tract, endoscopic images are usually not clear enough to be interpreted by doctors or used for further processing. Although many algorithms have been proposed to improve image quality from different aspects, the balance of algorithm complexity and image quality is still a challenge worth exploring. In this paper, we propose a novel function named adaptive fraction gamma transformation (AFGT) to enhance the quality of images captured by the WCE. Characteristics of AFGT are adaptive to different luminance in an image and self-tunable to the statistical characteristics of different images. Besides, HSI color space is adopted for color restoration, namely, the saturation component is linearly scaled according to the enhanced intensity component. Experimental results show that performances of the proposed method in both visual quality and objective assessments are better than that of the state-of-art methods.

Public safety is, to a greater or lesser extent, a significant concern in most modern cities. In many of these cities, video surveillance is employed to prevent and deter crime, often building systems with hundreds of cameras and sensors. Such systems proved to be effective in crime fighting and prevention, but they have high bandwidth requirements in order to bring a real-time monitoring. In countryside areas, where only low speed connections are available, the installation of such systems is not suitable and a new approach is required. In this context, this project proposes a platform based on open source libraries for video analysis techniques such as motion detection, object tracking, object classification on a low-bandwidth network. The proposed architecture is open and scalable as a result of performing imageprocessing on the camera. These platform runs on robust distributed smart cameras that are ready for being installed in hard places. The system is prepared to deal with energy power failures;in order to increase reliability. This work describes the platform design, the smartCAM layout and components, the algorithms currently used for object tracking and classification, and exposes results regarding the efficiency of the solution.
