This paper introduces DUBIO, a cloud platform which analyzes the radiometric infrared videos uploaded by drones which patrol large PV plants. Thanks to its artificial vision algorithms, DUBIO does not require any human intervention in selecting and associating the framed PV modules to the corresponding ones in the topology of the plant. DUBIO implements an innovative diagnostic protocol, which evidences the behavior of the module independently from the environmental conditions, i.e., decontextualizes the overheating of each module from the external conditions. By this way, the data automatically computed and collected in a multimedia database provide the O&M technicians with significant information, useful also for studying the ageing trend of each module of the monitored plant. The system, which is currently under a massive test in several plants of Enel Green Power, will constitute a pay for use service cloud platform worldwide available to the O&M market, since the second quarter of 2018.

Increasing computational requirements in embedded mobile devices, especially with regard to imageprocessing, necessitates the use of hardware acceleration to handle higher throughputs. ARM Cortex A series of processors, which are present in a majority of mobile devices such as smartphones, feature a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) coprocessor called NEON. The wide SIMD architecture enables the parallelization of various imageprocessing operations and algorithms, resulting in significant improvements in the system throughput. This paper discusses the use of NEON Intrinsics, a C language implementation of the NEON SIMD instruction set, which is an extension of the ARM instruction set, allowing the seamless integration of optimized imageprocessing libraries with application code written in higher level languages, while maintaining performance comparable to hand optimized assembly language libraries. Several imageprocessing operations and algorithms optimized using NEON Intrinsics are benchmarked on a test bench as well as real world hardware platforms to validate the acceleration achieved in imageprocessing tasks.

Prostate segmentation in computed tomography (CT) images is useful for planning and guidance of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. However, the low soft-tissue contrast of CT images makes the manual prostate segmentation a time-consuming task with high inter-observer variation. We developed a semi-automatic, three-dimensional (3D) prostate segmentation algorithm using shape and texture analysis and have evaluated the method against manual reference segmentations. In a training data set we defined an inter-subject correspondence between surface points in the spherical coordinate system. We applied this correspondence to model the globular and smoothly curved shape of the prostate with 86, well-distributed surface points using a point distribution model that captures prostate shape variation. We also studied the local texture difference between prostate and non-prostate tissues close to the prostate surface. For segmentation, we used the learned shape and texture characteristics of the prostate in CT images and we used a set of user inputs for prostate localization. We trained our algorithm using 23 CT images and tested it on 10 images. We evaluated the results compared with those of two experts' manual reference segmentations using different error metrics. The average measured Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and mean absolute distance (MAD) were 88 +/- 2% and 1.9 +/- 0.5 mm, respectively. The averaged inter-expert difference measured on the same dataset was 91 +/- 4% (DSC) and 1.3 +/- 0.6 mm (MAD). With no prior intra-patient information, the proposed algorithm showed a fast, robust and accurate performance for 3D CT segmentation.

Modern society depends heavily on satellite infrastructure. However, Space becomes more and more congested by space debris from over 50 years of space activities. This growing threat in orbit must be monitored. The aim of the ESA GSTP activity "Optical In-Situ Monitor" is to design and test a breadboard of a space-based space debris camera and to develop and test its end-to-end processing chain. The on-board processing functions will focus on the payload imageprocessing in order to reduce the data volume (image segmentation for streak detection). The suitable technologies for the processing units will be described: the HPDP, an ARM-Cortex R5F processor and Microsemi's RTG4 FPGA. For imageprocessing, several algorithms were tested extensively: the CCSDS 122.0-B-1, the Boundary Tensor and the Differences Method. This paper shows the current state of the project and gives an overview of what activities still need to be tackled before finalization. The final step of the project will be to decide which combination of processor-algorithm yields the best results.

In the paper we present a method for increasing the quality of views synthesized with typical Depth-image-Based Rendering (DIBR) view synthesis algorithms. In the proposed idea the resolution of input real views and corresponding depth maps is doubled before the view synthesis. After the synthesis, the resolution of a synthesized view is downsampled back to the original resolution. This approach is transparent for the view synthesis algorithms, thus can be used with any DIBR method. In the paper, tests for two synthesis algorithms (the state-of-the-art MPEG reference software and our view synthesis method) are presented. For both algorithms, the proposed upsampling improves objective and subjective quality of synthesized views.

The current advances in hardware led to the development of the GPGPU (General-purpose computing on graphics processing units) paradigm. Thus, nowadays, the GPU (Graphics processing Unit) is used not only for graphics programming, but also for general purpose algorithms. This paper discusses several methods regarding the use of CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) for 2D and 3D imageprocessing techniques. Some general rules for writing parallel algorithms in computer vision are pointed out. A theoretic comparison between the complexity for CPU (Central processing Unit) and GPU implementations of imageprocessingalgorithms is given. Also, real computing times are provided for several algorithms in order to point out the actual performance gain of using the GPU over CPU. The factors that contribute to the difference between theoretic and real performance gain are also discussed.
