This paper presents algorithms for automatically delineating colonies in microbiology engineering. The algorithm procedure consists of image preprocessing, image classification, edge detection, thresholding, colony boundary tracing, split based on shape analysis and color detection. A number of imageprocessing and segmentation algorithms are included in a system, after image classification, the system configure a colony delineating algorithm procedure for each of the corresponding classes, that means that five classes have five different colony delineating algorithm procedures. The algorithms can automatically delineate colonies not only on a simple image and also on a complex image. The algorithms have been tested in different laboratories, they work well.

Simulations of artificial vision suggest that thousands of electrodes may be required to restore vision for ones with diseases of the outer retina. With the development of MEMS fabrication process for the stimulation electrode array, extraocular imageprocessing is becoming more and more important for the retinal prosthesis systems. A Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based extraocular imageprocessing system (EIPS) for a retinal prosthesis has been developed in this paper. The system mainly consists of a CMOS image sensor and a DSP processing system, which provides the capability of implmenting the real-time imageprocessing with low power consumption. Furthermore, this system offers the flexibility of realizing various imageprocessingalgorithms with different specification requirements on the DSP by programming, such as different frame rate, resolution and throughput data rate. The related imageprocessingalgorithms include the image resizing, color erasing, edge enhancement and edge detection. Finally, the speed of different DSPs in the market has been evaluated and compared for achieving better performance.

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is procuring Airborne Real-time Cueing Hyperspectral Enhanced Reconnaissance (ARCHER) systems to increase their search-and-rescue mission capability. These systems are being installed on a fleet of Gippsland GA-8 aircraft, and will position CAP to gain real-world mission experience with the application of hyperspectral sensor and processing technology to search and rescue. The ARCHER system design, data processing, and operational concept leverage several years of investment in hyperspectral technology research and airborne system demonstration programs by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Each ARCHER system consists of a NovaSol-designed, pushbroom, visible/near-infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) sensor, a co-boresighted visible panchromatic high-resolution imaging (HRI) sensor, and a CMIGITS-III GPS/INS unit in an integrated sensor assembly mounted inside the GA8 cabin. ARCHER incorporates an on-board data processing system developed by Space Computer Corporation (SCC) to perform numerous real-time processing functions including data acquisition and recording, raw data correction, target detection, cueing and chipping, precision image geo-registration, and display and dissemination of image products and target cue information. A ground processing station is provided for post-flight data playback and analysis. This paper describes the requirements and architecture of the ARCHER system, with emphasis on data processor design, components, software, interfaces, and displays. Key sensor performance characteristics and real-time data processing features are discussed. The use of the system for detecting and geo-locating ground targets in real-time is demonstrated using test data collected in Southern California in the fall of 2004.

Haze removal is useful in computational photography and computer vision applications. Although many haze removal algorithms have been proposed, their computational efficiency requires improvement. A real-time haze removal method is presented in this paper. The method is based on the concept of a dark channel prior. To enhance the haze removal performance, an approximate method to estimate the atmospheric light and transmission is employed. For embedded system applications, a hardware architecture to perform real-time haze removal is proposed. The hardware can achieve 116 MHz on Stratix FPGA. The simulation results indicate that the hardware is highly efficient and performs well. It obtains good image recovery results and satisfies the real-time requirement even for large images.
