Recently, image retrieval and analysis algorithms have been extensively applied to art related domains. In this field, state-of-the-art approaches mainly focus on feature extraction with the aim of improving reliability of authentication, classification and retrieval of art paintings. In this paper we propose an effective modeling, based on a graph structure, and a retrieval strategy, based on a graph matching algorithm, for art paintings. The proposed approach has been tested on different datasets with high quality results allowing an user to run effective content-based queries on painting records.

Super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) consists in processing an image or a bunch of images to generate a new image of higher spatial resolution. This problem has been intensively studied, but seldom is SRR applied in practice for satellite data. In this paper, we briefly review the state of the art on SRR algorithms and we argue that commonly adopted strategies for their evaluation do not reflect the operational conditions. We report our study on assessing the SRR outcome, relying on new quantitative measures. The obtained results allow us to outline the most important research pathways to improve the performance of SRR.

The Distributed Aperture Infrared System (DAIRS) defines a new direction in the design of electro-optic systems. A multiplicity of identical sensors provides the data for a central processing system. A variety of signal processingalgorithms are used to obtain the functionality that was previously obtained using specialized sensors for each function. This permits a single system to be a Missile Warning set, an Infrared Search and Track set, the Pilotage sensor, and a Situational Awareness system as well as performing various tasks associated with the warfighting mission of the platform. This paper describes the DAIRS system being evolved for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) which will be the first US aircraft developed in the 21st century. The system is uniquely processor driven, representing a transition in electro-optics that parallels the transition in radar systems that occurred 20-30 years ago. The algorithms used to implement the functions are briefly described. The paper presents processor loading, I/O and memory requirements peculiar to the JSF. Application of the DAIRS technology to other platforms and applications is also discussed. A short speculative section on possible future trends concludes the paper.

Efficient parallel algorithms are presented for image template matching on hypercube SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) machine of sizes N**2, N**2 multiplied by M**2 and N**2 multiplied by K**2 processing elements. For a N multiplied by N image and M multiplied by M window with N**2 PEs, a simple optimal parallel algorithm with O(M**2 plus log N) time is given. The N**2 multiplied by M**2-PEs case is solved in O(log N) time and the N**2 multiplied by K**2-PEs case is solved in O(M**2/K**2 plus log N) time. A parallel algorithm for the N**2-PEs case is designed using constant space/PE that runs in O(M**2* log*** (M) plus log N) time. All the algorithms have superior time performance compared to known results and are shown to be optimal.
