The Memetic Algorithm (MA), introduced by Pablo Moscato in 1989, integrates Evolutionary algorithms with local search methods, enhancing its effectiveness in solving complex optimization problems. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of MA research published in 2019, reviewing 75 selected papers from an initial pool of 112 identified through Google Scholar. The selected papers were categorized into five types: optimization problems (40 papers), image processing (10 papers), parallel processing (5 papers), gene/DNA datasets (4 papers), and other applications (16 papers). The survey highlights MA's versatility and effectiveness across various domains, particularly its potential for solving complex optimization problems. Key findings include the adaptability of MA for diverse applications, its ongoing relevance in addressing challenging issues, and promising opportunities for combining MA with other algorithms to enhance performance. The paper also emphasizes the significance of MA in fields such as image processing, where it improves pattern recognition and image enhancement, and in bioinformatics, where it optimizes gene selection and genetic algorithms. Despite the extensive study of MA, there remains a significant research gap in non-English literature, particularly in Bahasa, limiting accessibility for Indonesian researchers. This survey aims to bridge this gap by providing valuable insights and encouraging further exploration and application of MA to solve increasingly complex problems. It offers a comprehensive overview that underscores the importance of MA and its potential for future research and innovation. © 2024 IEEE.

Recommender systems make individualized suggestions for users based on their actions and preferences by utilizing machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).. These systems have evolved significantly, incorporating various AI techniques like fuzzy techniques, transfer learning, genetic algorithms, neural networks, deep learning, and more. The use of AI in recommender systems aims to enhance prediction accuracy and address data sparsity issues.1 Key methodologies in recommender systems include deep neural networks, transfer learning, active learning, fuzzy techniques, evolutionary algorithms, natural language processing, and computer vision.1 These techniques play crucial roles in knowledge representation, reasoning, planning, communication, perception, and image processing within recommender systems.1 Machine Learning plays a vital role in recommendation systems by utilizing algorithms like KNN clustering, Naive Bayes, collaborative filtering and content filtering to suggest products to users overwhelmed by information on e-commerce platforms.4 Additionally, Recommender systems (RSs) are widely used across various domains such as e-commerce, tourism, health, and e-learning to enhance user experience and increase sales through personalized recommendations based on user preferences.5 RSs have become integral in guiding decisions for users in online transactions and improving the quality of their interactions with platforms like Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Facebook, and Twitter5 used to pinpoint people who are most at risk for developing complications from an illness or who are most likely to have poor treatment outcomes. Palm recognition systems play an important role in biometric authentication;however, existing systems frequently have low accuracy and resiliency due to problems such as changing lighting conditions, occlusions, and hand orientations. The paper describes a novel way to improve palm recognition accuracy by combining modern image processing and deep learning approaches. Unlike traditional systems that utilize handcrafted features and shallow learning algorithms, the proposed system uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for feature extraction and classification, as well as advanced image preprocessing techniques. The technology preprocesses palm images to increase quality and consistency, thereby reducing the impact of environmental factors. Cross-validation trials yielded consistent results, with an average accuracy of 95%, precision of 92%, recall of 96%, and Fl-score of 94%. Furthermore, computational efficiency comparisons reveal that the proposed system beats existing ones in terms of training time, inference time, and model size, indicating that it is a promising option for accurate and efficient palm recognition in a variety of real-world applications. © 2024 IEEE.

systems known as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), license plate recognition or LPR are now widely used in many sectors such as law enforcement, traffic control, vehicle access etc. This is a technology that uses object detection and optical character recognition to identify the numbers on number plates from input images or video. These systems use high-level hardware and software components together to automatically capture, recognize and process license plate information. Key elements of any ANPR system include high-resolution cameras, image processing algorithms, and optical character recognition (OCR) methods. The operational workflow of an ANPR system comprises several steps like image acquisition, preprocessing, license plate localization, character segmentation, OCR, and post-processing stages. Different applications of ANPR technology include traffic flow monitoring;helping police track stolen vehicles;congestion detection for traffic management purposes;and automated entry/exit processes based on authorized number plate recognition among others for supporting vehicle access control. A accuracy of 90% was achieved by proposed, ANPR systems represent a significant technological advance that improves accuracy;efficiency as well as automation in various critical areas of our lives. © 2024 IEEE.

Addressing the limitations of currently rare small target detection algorithms based on Human Visual systems (HVS) that struggle with achieving satisfactory performance in complex backgrounds and lack high real-time capabilities, this paper introduces an innovative small target detection algorithm. This approach is founded on the integration of the Full-Direction Dilation Difference of Gaussians (FDD-DOG) and background estimation based on local contrast (LCBE). First, the high-frequency signal in the target area is enhanced by using the FDD-DOG operation, based on the difference between the real target and the background. Then, the background noise is further suppressed by assigning appropriate weights to the enhanced image by using local contrast-based background estimation. After that, the target to be detected is extracted by the adaptive threshold segmentation method. Experiments comparing the algorithm proposed in this paper with other HVS-based detection algorithms show that the method in this paper exhibits better detection performance in different infrared image sequences, where the background suppression factor is improved by an average of about 25 times and the signal-to-clutter ratio gain is improved by an average of about 15 times. © 2024 SPIE.

Does progress on imageNet transfer to real-world datasets? We investigate this question by evaluating imageNet pre-trained models with varying accuracy (57% -83%) on six practical image classification datasets. In particular, we study datasets collected with the goal of solving real-world tasks (e.g., classifying images from camera traps or satellites), as opposed to web-scraped benchmarks collected for comparing models. On multiple datasets, models with higher imageNet accuracy do not consistently yield performance improvements. For certain tasks, interventions such as data augmentation improve performance even when architectures do not. We hope that future benchmarks will include more diverse datasets to encourage a more comprehensive approach to improving learning algorithms.

Accurate recognition of intra-pulse modulation patterns is essential for enhancing radar system performance. Tranditional recognition algorithms are typically designed under ideal conditions and handcrafted features, the presence of substantial noise interference in complex electromagnetic conditions can significantly degrade the performance of these algorithms. Although Transformers have achieved great success with computer vision tasks, existing vision transformers are lack of capturing long-range dependencies. To remedy these flaws, this paper proposes an accurate automatic modulation recognition algorithm based on vision transformer. First, we utilize traditional image processing techniques to provide position of signal in time-frequency image and introduce a radius basis function to generate the positional embeddings. This procedure enhances the spatial awareness of our model. Second, dynamic scales of 2D patches are embedded as the input to the encoders. Third, inspired by dilated convolutions, vanilla attention is reformed in the cascade encoders. Experiments and ablation studies exhibit the proposed algorithm performs well under conditions of various signal-to-noise ratio conditions. It is worth mentioning that the classification accuracy can be up to 93.4% when SNR is -10 dB, and reach to 94.4% when SNR is 0 dB, which indicates the proposed algorithm demonstrates superior robustness against noise perturbations compared to other methods. The present work provides a sound experimental basis for further studying automatic modulation classification for the sake of future field application in electronic warfare systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Face morphing attacks have posed severe threats to Face Recognition systems (FRS), which are operated in border control and passport issuance use cases. Correspondingly, morphing attack detection algorithms (MAD) are needed to defend against such attacks. MAD approaches must be robust enough to handle unknown attacks in an open-set scenario where attacks can originate from various morphing generation algorithms, post-processing and the diversity of printers/scanners. The problem of generalization is further pronounced when the detection has to be made on a single suspected image. In this paper, we propose a generalized single-image-based MAD (S-MAD) algorithm by learning the encoding from Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture. Compared to CNN-based architectures, ViT model has the advantage on integrating local and global information and hence can be suitable to detect the morphing traces widely distributed among the face region. Extensive experiments are carried out on face morphing datasets generated using publicly available FRGC face datasets. Several state-of-the-art (SOTA) MAD algorithms, including representative ones that have been publicly evaluated, have been selected and benchmarked with our ViT-based approach. Obtained results demonstrate the improved detection performance of the proposed S-MAD method on inter-dataset testing (when different data is used for training and testing) and comparable performance on intra-dataset testing (when the same data is used for training and testing) experimental protocol.

This paper presents a novel image encryption algorithm that leverages the chaotic properties of the Chen system, the cryptographic strength of OpenSSL, and the mathematical robustness of the Fibonacci Q-Matrix. The proposed method begins by generating an encryption key using the Chen chaotic system, known for its sensitivity to initial conditions and complex dynamic behavior. This key is then utilized in conjunction with a substitution box (S box) generated through OpenSSL to introduce non-linearity and diffusion into the encryption process. To further enhance security, the resulting image data undergoes a series of multiplications by a large number of Fibonacci Q-Matrices, exploiting their recursive properties for added complexity and confusion. Numerical results demonstrate the proposed algorithm's superior performance in terms of security and efficiency, making it a promising solution for safeguarding digital images against unauthorized access and cryptographic attacks. © 2024 Division of Signal processing and Electronic systems, Poznan University of Technology (DSPES PUT).

Interactive information fault diagnosis technology is a new type of fault diagnosis technology which is integrated by information fusion, artificial intelligence, computer science and other disciplines. It can extract interactive information data of equipment in real time, analyze the characteristics of fault information, and then find the change and trend of equipment operating status. However, there are still some shortcomings in the practical application of this technology, for example, it is difficult to deal with a large number of complex interactive information data, and it is difficult to carry out effective fault diagnosis. Therefore, an intelligent fault diagnosis method with improved grey relational degree is proposed in this paper. This method can effectively extract the interactive information feature data of the equipment, and carry out the correlation analysis of the fault feature data through the grey correlation analysis algorithm, which provides a new idea for the fault diagnosis of the equipment. © 2024 SPIE.
