This paper presents a new image fusion method that combines IHS transform and curvelet transform. Experiments carried out on a enhanced thematic mapper plus image show that the proposed method quantitatively outperforms state-of-the art image fusion methods, in terms of geometric, radiometric, and spectral fidelity.

Road extraction plays an important role in many applications such as traffic monitoring. In order to speed the extraction and enhance its precision, an approach based on particle filtering is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an improved line detector is presented to extract road candidates, which makes use of the road characteristic on SAR images. Then particle filtering based on Monte Carlo theory is applied to group the candidates. Applied results show that the road extraction method is effective and the road features on SAR images have been extracted accurately. Moreover, the method can be realized simply and save the amount of calculation.

The inhibitory interaction has long been observed in the lateral eye of the Limulus and been integrated into mechanism of enhancing contrast. When applying to the enhancement of low-contrast image for segmenting interested objects, the original lateral inhibition model will simultaneously amplify noises while enhancing edges contrast, This paper presents a new lateral inhibition model, which is called Stick-Guided Lateral Inhibition, for enhancement of low-contrast image so that week edges may exert a stronger force to catch the boundary of targets in the latter segmentation. First, the guided inhibition term is introduced as a general framework for improving the performance of lateral inhibition models in the presence of noises. Then, by using asymmetric sticks to guide the inhibiting process, we are able to accentuate the intensity gradients of image-edges and contours while suppressing the amplification of noises. Experiments on synthetic images and remote sensor images show that our model significantly enhances low-contrast images and improves the performance of latter segmentation.

Biometrics is nowadays a fast-developing domain (especially after the September 11(th) events) that facilitates identifying suspects in a crime. Herein we propose a new, complementary approach that may succeed when other conventional methods fail. This new method is based on the fact that each person has its own manner of walking and moving (dynamic-signature). This observation may be used for (untouched, remote) identification and authentication (verification) of a person who tries to change his identity by disguising himself. Several mathematical tools have been used for patternrecognition;these include the Fourier transform neural-network algorithms, the Kalman Filter (for prediction), morphological methods, and others. This study aims at developing a satellite-based methodology for the implementation of two Ministerial conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe indicators for the European Alpine Bio-geographic region, and their changes over time: (1) area of forest cover and (2) forest spatial pattern. The northern Carpathians were selected as a study area due to the documented recent increase of forest cover. Changes of forest cover were quantified using Landsat images for the years 1987 and 2000. Single-date forest-non-forest maps were derived by image segmentation and supervised classification, including the use of ancillary data (CORINE Land Cover and a digital elevation model). These maps were an input for the post-classification change detection. The forest spatial pattern maps with four classes (core, patch, edge and perforated forest) were derived with morphological imageprocessing. A simple method to mask uncertainty areas on forest maps and related products was also developed. The accuracy of the resulting forest-non-forest map was assessed with orthophotos and amounts to 93.9%. Uncertainty areas, for which change assessment was judged more difficult and less reliable, were not considered for assessing forest cover change. The annual forest cover change rate of 0.38% was found over the 1987-2000 period. For the 13-year time period, we found a decrease of core forest and an increase of patch and perforated forest. We conclude that the proposed methodology allows to quantify changes of forest cover and forest spatial pattern at similar to 1 ha minimum mapping unit.

The most methods of close-range photogrammetry are based on Direct Linear Transformation (DLT). But DLT often has unstable solution and every image needs more than six ground control points to compute DLT parameters, so this method is hard to acquire the high accuracy and its efficiency is low. The paper discusses a new method of digital closerange photogrammetry-panning and multi-baseline digital close-range photogrammetry. This method enlarges the intersection angle and improves the intersection precision by multi-baseline. At the same time this method applies the classic aerotriangulation and bundle adjustment to the close-range photogrammetry, we need more than three ground control points to compute the exterior orientation elements of all images. The experiments prove that this method can acquire the high accuracy.

In this paper we propose an approach to coherent high resolution image simulation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that observes natural terrain scenes. The present approach preserves the relative phase information of each individual scatter when it calculates the backscattering from terrain scene objects that composed of some elementary scatters whose scattering model are well investigated. We adopt the Bin Sort algorithm to simulate SAR imaging process;it combines the extinction, attenuation and shadowing effects of all scatters as well as multiple scattering effects of some strong scatters such as tree trunks and main branches. The fractal concept and Lindenmayor system are employed to model the realistic tree structure while other natural objects are constructed based on the ground truth data. As an example, a coherent SAR image for a computer-generated scene that includes trees, grassland, rough land and water area were simulated.

In the study of radar wind field retrieval with variational assimilation method, the simple adjoint models have merits of simplifying calculation, saving time and improving efficiency. This paper studies wind field retrieval on levels of different height using the reflectivity advection equation as the control equation, proposes the parameterization method of sub-grid scale term which is related to the vertical motion. The flow pattern comparison and precision analysis with dual-Doppler radar have been made. Experiment results show this model could fully use the evolution information of reflectivity and effectively approximate to the real wind field.
