Estimates of vegetation water content are of great interest for assessing vegetation water status in agriculture and forestry, and have been used for drought assessment. This study focuses on the retrieval of foliar water content with hyperspectral data at canopy level. The hyperspectral image used in this study was acquired by the airborne operative modular imaging spectrometer (OMIS) at Demonstration Site for Precision Agriculture in Xiaotangshan area, Beijing, on April 26th. 2001. 40 image spectra were extracted to correspond to the quasi-synchronous meausurements of foliar water content (FWC). The image spectra of winter wheat were utilized to validate the sensitivity of the existing and novel water indices and parameters of three water absorption features in NIR and SWIR regions. Correlation analysis showed that. NDWI(860,1241) and NDWI(860,1200) both had significant linear relationships with FWC (R-2 were 0.4124 and 0.4042 respectively). Red edge position (REP) could reflect indirectly the variations of wheat FWC to some extent. Significant linear relationships were also found between WI(820,1600) and FWC, and between WI(900,1200) and FWC, while no relationship was shown between the traditional WI(900,970) and FWC. The derived depth of water absorption centered around 2078nm, namely AD2078, had the highest linear correlation with FWC (R-2 is 0.4551), much higher than those parameters derived from the two water absorption around 1175 and 1409. In the end, AD2078 was applied to OMIS image to map the foliar water content. The value range of the inverted foliar water content ranged from 69.39 to 78.35%. which was quite close to that of the field measurements (70.72-78.12%). The distribution of the FWC map was quite consistent with growth status of winter wheat.

With the aerial LIDAR technology developing, how to automatically recognize and reconstruct the buildings from LIDAR dataset is an important research topic along with the widespread applications of LIDAR data in city modeling, urban planning, etc.. Applying the information of the first-and-last echo data of the same laser point, in this paper, a scheme of 3D-reconstruction of simple building has been presented, which mainly include the following steps: the recognition of non-boundary building points and boundary building points and the generation of each building-point-cluster;the localization of the boundary of each building;the detection of the planes included in each cluster and the reconstruction of building in 3D form. Through experiment, it can be proved that for the LIDAR data with first-and-last echo information the scheme can effectively and efficiently 3D-reconstruct simple buildings, such as flat and gabled buildings.

Analytical expression of normalized radar backscattering cross-section (NRCS) contrasts for shallow water bathymetry SAR images has been firstly obtained by applying the continuity equation and the first order Bragg backscattering theory, and replacing the surface wave action balance equation with high frequency ocean wave spectrum balance equation. Based on the expression, we have simulated C band NRCS contrasts under different currents and sea surface winds firstly, results show the trend of NRCS contrasts' change with the shallow water bathymetry, and preferable currents and sea surface winds conditions for mapping shallow water bathymetry by SAR, which agree well with observations and shallow water bathymetry SAR images simulations. Moreover, the NRCS contrasts index which means the relationship between each currents and sea surface winds under given bathymetry parameters is first quantitatively calculated, which gives scientific proof for carrying SAR shallow water bathymetry surveys according to the ocean and weather conditions.

image registration is usually a required first processing step for such activities as surveillance, video tracking, change detection, and remote sensing. Often, different sensors are used for the collection of the test and reference imagery. The sensor phenomenology differences can present problems for automatic selection of registration algorithm parameters because of different cross-sensor feature manifestation. In previous work involving edge-based multisensor image registration, we applied a previously-developed automated approach to parameter selection, designed specifically for edge detection. In this work, we adapt and apply a dynamic feature selection algorithm (DFSA) that we recently developed for use in registration algorithm selection for registering images with varying scene content type. We adapt and apply the DFSA to the problem of selecting appropriate registration algorithm parameter values in an edge-based registration algorithm. The approach involves generating test-to-reference feature match scores over a sampling of the transform hypothesis space. The approach is scene-adaptive thereby requiring no a priori information on image scene content. Furthermore, in the DFSA we leverage prior match score calculation generated in a hierarchical grid search to reduce additional computational expense. We give a brief overview of the registration algorithmic framework, and present a description of the dynamic feature selection algorithm. Numerical results are presented for performing test SAR-to-reference EO image registration to show the registration convergence performance improvement resulting from use of the DFSA. Numerical results are generated over images exhibiting different scene content types. We also evaluate the effect of match score normalization on the registration convergence performance improvement.

To avoid the degraded artifacts during satellite image acquisition, the subpixel technology is commonly used, which is interlacingly sampled with two images offsetting half a pixel of the same scene. However, the common interpolation is not highly precise. The reason is due to the fact that they are linear and local. In order to get a high degree of satellite image resolution, the paper proposes a multi-degree shift invariant complex wavelet filtering method. Based on the complex wavelet filtering method, the higher resolution remote sensing images can be attained. Accordingly, the algorithm of adaptive shrinkage complex wavelet denoising based inter-scale is combined with the algorithm mentioned above. The multi-degree interpolation and denoising method is proved to be more effective comparing with other common methods. The multi-degree filting method is suitable for processing the complicated remote sensing images, and can reconstruct the high-quality image perfectly from the multi-directional subimages.

There is an urgent demand on steganalysis, which analyzes if an image includes hidden information, or further decodes the hidden information. This paper proposes a steganalysis method based on statistics model in contourlet transform domain. The proposed method is a blind universal steganalysis method, which does not aim at specified steganography method. The contourlet coefficients of natural image shows obvious regularity which includes sparsity and clustering in subband and similarity across scales. The popular statistical model in wavelet subband is the generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD) model, which can capture the first-order statistical features in subband. While the GGD model can not characterize the dependency between coefficients. The proposed steganalysis method takes contourlet statistics in subband and dependency between contourlet coefficients into account. The dependencies are measured using mutual information. The selected features include parameters of GGD model in subband, the mutual information between coefficients. The classificator chose is Support Vector Machine (SVM). The experimental results show that the features used in the proposed method are valid, when the dependencies between contourlet coefficients are taken into account, the false positive rate is greatly lower than the case in which the dependencies are not considered.

This work presents a methodology for the land-cover classification of satellite images based on clustering of the Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM). The classification task is carried out using a three-stage approach. At the first stage, the SOM is used to quantize and to represent the original patterns of the image in a space of smaller dimension. At the second stage of the method, a filtering process is applied on the SOM prototypes, wherein prototypes associated to input patterns that incorporate more than one land cover class and prototypes that have null activity are excluded in the next stage or simply eliminated of the analysis. At the third and last stage, the SOM prototypes are segmented through a hierarchical clustering method which uses the neighborhood relation of the neurons and incorporates spatial information in its merging criterion. The experimental results show an application example of the proposed methodology on an IKONOS image.

In hyperspectral imaging systems with a continuous-to-discrete (CD) model, the goal is to solve the matrix equation g = H theta + n for theta. Here g is a data vector obtained on pixels on a focal plane array (FPA), and n is the additive pixel noise vector. The hyperspectral object cube f(x, y, lambda) to be recovered is represented by theta, which is the vectorized set of expansion coefficients of f with respect to a family of functions. The imaging operator is the system matrix H of which its columns represent the projection of each expansion function onto the FPA. Hence an estimate of the object cube f(x, y, lambda) is reconstructed from these recovered expansion function projection coefficients. Furthermore H is equivalently a calibration matrix, and amenable to an analytic description. Since the number of expansion functions is large, and the number of pixels on an FPA is large, H becomes huge and very unwieldy to store. We describe a means by which we can reduce the effective size of H by taking advantage of the analytic model of the imaging system and converting H into a series of look-up tables. By this method we have been able to drastically reduce the storage requirements for H from terabytes to sub-megabyte sizes. We provide an example of this technique in isoplanatic and polychromatic calibration of a flash hyperspectral imaging system. These sets of lookup tables are expansion function independent and also independent of object cube sampling.

In this paper, we introduce a new approach of simultaneous acquisition of hyper-spectral image by means of using Computed Tomography Imaging Interferometer. Detecting rapidly varying targets both spatially and spectrally using imaging spectrometer is an international phenomenon in remote sensing in recent years and worthwhile in many domains such as pollution inspection and biochemical arms detection. Computed Tomography Imaging Interferometer (CTII) we put forward previously is a kind of imaging spectrometer with merits of high resolution, high throughout and high signal-to-noise rate. In our current work, some transmogrifications have been brought into the existed model of CTII. More channels are constructed in the new type of CTII-Simultaneous CTII (SiCTII). The rotation system in each channel is made irrotianal. Snapshot can be brought in the acquisition by means of opening and closing channels simultaneously. The Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) are considered in the image reconstruction. Referring to the characteristics of SiCTII, a conclusion can be made that SiCTII is a kind of imaging spectrometer for rapid acquisition and can be applied in the instances, in which the spatial resolution is not highly demanded and rapid data acquisition is demanded.

The intelligent surveillance system based on video content analysis has been the core trend in the security service industry. Due to the high complexity in techniques such as real time processing and image contents analysis/understanding, a well developed product is not available until now in this field. However, except the existing functions such as remote controlling, danger warning by artificial monitoring, video recording in a fix schedule or activated by scene action, etc., an intelligent surveillance system should include more advanced functions. This paper presents a simple and effective method for automatic disaster detection in the early stage by real time video analysis. Via analyzing the specific feature vectors including spatial-temporal spectra variation, color/grayscale histogram concentration, etc., a fully automatic process is developed to substantially improve the performance, especially in early detection thus to reduce the loss caused by natural disaster, of the existing security surveillance systems. The experimental results show that the proposed system not only has good performance but also alleviate the system cost than the previous systems thus open the future trend in the related security industry products.
