An experimental ultra-wideband radar system prototype is presented for imaging objects located in the near field of the radar antennas. The system is primarily intended for through-matter, e.g. through-wall, target detection and imaging. The radar hardware is based on several novel technical solutions in the design of its electromagnetic (EM) and circuit components including a new antenna element with wide impedance and gain bandwidth. The sanie elements are employed for the transmit channel and the two-element receive array. The signal processing and target imaging algorithms are presented. Some results of indoor tests to image in 2-D the spatial position of a cylindrical object are reported. In particular, a brightest-spot recognition technique is demonstrated that uses a number of special radar calibration routines to set properly the time/range scale required for precise target localization and imaging while avoiding appearance of false target responses. © 2007 IEEE.

An image deformation algorithm is integrated with a Gaussian process classifier for application to remote-sensing tasks in which data is in the form of imagery. To combine these disparate techniques, we introduce a novel kernel covariance function for the Gaussian process that allows us to incorporate the result of the image deformation algorithm into a rigorous Bayesian classification framework. The resulting classifier is completely non-parametric in the sense that no parameters or hyperparameters must be learned. The promise of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on a data set of real, measured land mine data.

Numerous techniques were invented in computer vision and photogrammetry to obtain spatial information from digital images. We intend to describe and improve the performance of these vision techniques by providing test objectives, data, metrics and test protocols. In this paper we propose a comprehensive benchmarking dataset for evaluating a variety of automatic surface reconstruction algorithms (shape-from-X) and a methodology for comparing their results.

Recent improvements in laser vibrometry and day/night infrared (IR) and electro-optical (EO) imaging technology have created the opportunity to create a long-range multimodal surveillance system. This multimodal capability would greatly improve security force performance through clandestine listening of targets that are probing or penetrating a perimeter defense. This system could also provide the feeds for advanced face and voice recognition systems.

In this paper we focus on a stereo system consisting of one stationary and one moving platform. The stationary platform detects motions and gives cues to the moving platform. When an object is in the field of view of both sensors the object’s position, velocity, and acceleration are estimated from stereo. To prove the results a second stationary sensor platform is available to compute a reference from traditional stereo. We describe investigations about the accuracy and reliability concerning the automatic velocity estimation of targets in image sequences of multi-ocular systems with emphasis on moving sensor platforms. In order to make the assessment more comprehensible, we discuss a stereo-system consisting of one stationary and one moving platform. Therefore in this context dynamic stereo means that the stereo basis and relative orientation are varying within the image sequence. We present image sequences originating from different sensors at different positions including one moving sensor that were recorded during the same time span. Since all-day capability is required for warning systems predominantly infrared (IR) sensors were employed. We took image sequences of scenarios with one or more vehicles. The vehicles moved with typical velocities in natural surrounding. Their distances to the sensors was in the close range. The trajectories of all sensors and vehicles were registered with GPS-recorders to obtain ground-truth data.

In this paper, an accurate point matching scheme based on Combined Moment Invariants (CMIs) and their new metric is presented. In general, the matching of the local similarity detection by the combined invariants and conventional distances produces some outliers, which should be deleted firstly through some complex statistics. In order to obtain the more reliable matching results, we construct a new metric for combined NMIs. The whole framework involves two steps: 1) Extraction of Control points (CPs) on the reference image -the canny edge detector and well-known Harris detector are described to extract the edges and corner points. 2) Searching for the corresponding CPs in a circular of the matched image - is based on local similarity metric with combined NMIs. The framework is fully automatic and simple without any additional steps. It has been successfully applied to register remote sensing images. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme excludes the outliers successfully for their high matching accuracy.

We realized a set of assistive system based on lips images recognition for communication of the disabled. This system is composed with the software system mainly and the hardware system auxiliary. In this system, the software system can be divided into two major parts. The first part is to develop a recognition algorithm for the opened/closed status of lips images, including the face detection, the face tracking, the lips pattern recognition, the lips locations and extraction, the lips images processing etc. The second part is to develop a fuzzy algorithm for recognizing long tone/silence or short tone/silence of Morse codes. After the fuzzy recognition, the open/close statuses of lips images can be transferred to Morse codes to input the characters, achieving the functions of word processing. Regarding to the hardware of the assistive system, we have primarily realized the remote control system for electrical home appliances. Once it obtains information of open/close statuses of lips images after the software recognition, then the original parallel port interface of general computer and RF module can be used to carry out further remote control function of home appliances. In conclusion, we have completed the assistive communication system for the disabled with no need of any type of appurtenance. We improve some defects of traditional auxiliary system. It will be unnecessary to wear any type of appurtenance. We believe that the assistive system will be more helpful for the serious disabled especially with vertebra damaged. We hope our study can improve the communication abilities of the disabled and make some contributions to society.

Low-cost aerial vision systems need to face the challenges of using low quality products to perform aerial photography. Such systems are widely used in remote controlled aircrafts and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect aerial imagery and are used for image acquisition, terrain mapping or remote sensing. A one-pixel shift in a 0.8 mega pixel resolution image captured from a UAV operating at 1000ft will correspond to about 2.5m measurement error on the ground. In our case, a vibrating fisheye lens moving relative to the camera added new uncertainties in the collected images and required compensation. This paper presents a vibration compensation approach using a modified Hough Transform utilizing the circle shaped image provided by a fisheye lens. We define the fisheye circle boundary by using a Canny edge detector. Our vibration compensation was tested using our collected aerial images with enhanced performance in more than 80% of the cases.

Motivated by the requirements of archaeologists we are developing an automated system for acquisition, documentation and management of daily finds of excavations. These daily finds can be separated into large objects like remainders of architecture and small objects of ancient daily life - like ceramics and coins. Ceramics especially are found in numbers of tens of thousands on virtually every excavation, because ceramics have been in use for thousands of years. Until the present day these finds are documented by manual drawings. There is a similar situation in the case of coins, where manual drawings are often used to abstract them from photographs. Therefore we propose an automated acquisition and documentation system based on digital cameras and structured light for small findings. For ceramics we provide further processing to estimate horizontal cross-sections (profile-lines) for printed documentation, as it is done by manual drawing. For this a proper orientation of the acquired 3D-model is required and automatically estimated based on the assumption that ceramics were made on rotational plates (wheels). We are aware that ceramics might not always have been manufactured on rotational plates, because the wheel was not invented everywhere as for the example in the Americas. Even though ceramics from such areas appear to be rotational symmetric, we developed a method based on shape and symmetry analysis to determine the manufacturing techniques of ceramics. This helps to answer another archaeological question regarding the technological advance of an ancient culture. Results for accuracy and performance are shown on real data from recent interdisciplinary projects together with archaeologists from Austria, Germany, Israel and Peru. Furthermore we present preliminary results of the integration of coin classification in our documentation system. In natural complex terrain surfaces, scattering targets with random orientations produce random fluctuating echoes which lead to confused classifications by directly using target decomposition on polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) image. In order to reduce the influence, the target vector is transformed into the state with minimization of cross-polarization. Then a set of new parameters u/v/w are used to characterize scattering mechanisms under the deorientation theory, and the fuzzy membership is adopted instead of "hard" division of parameter plan. Characterizing the sample coherency matrices as complex Wishart distribution, the PolSAR image is clustered based on Bayes maximum likelihood (ML) criteria. Experiment is carried out on an L-band NASA/JPL SIR-C PolSAR image over Danshui town, Guangdong, China. Comparison results with the popular used methods show that the proposed method provides a significant improvement in classification and the associated scattering mechanism of class is more accurate and beneficial for automatic terrain recognition.
