Motivated by the requirements of archaeologists we are developing an automated system for acquisition, documentation and management of daily finds of excavations. These daily finds can be separated into large objects like remainders of architecture and small objects of ancient daily life - like ceramics and coins. Ceramics especially are found in numbers of tens of thousands on virtually every excavation, because ceramics have been in use for thousands of years. Until the present day these finds are documented by manual drawings. There is a similar situation in the case of coins, where manual drawings are often used to abstract them from photographs. Therefore we propose an automated acquisition and documentation system based on digital cameras and structured light for small findings. For ceramics we provide further processing to estimate horizontal cross-sections (profile-lines) for printed documentation, as it is done by manual drawing. For this a proper orientation of the acquired 3D-model is required and automatically estimated based on the assumption that ceramics were made on rotational plates (wheels). We are aware that ceramics might not always have been manufactured on rotational plates, because the wheel was not invented everywhere as for the example in the Americas. Even though ceramics from such areas appear to be rotational symmetric, we developed a method based on shape and symmetry analysis to determine the manufacturing techniques of ceramics. This helps to answer another archaeological question regarding the technological advance of an ancient culture. Results for accuracy and performance are shown on real data from recent interdisciplinary projects together with archaeologists from Austria, Germany, Israel and Peru. Furthermore we present preliminary results of the integration of coin classification in our documentation system. In natural complex terrain surfaces, scattering targets with random orientations produce random fluctuating echoes which lead to confused classifications by directly using target decomposition on polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) image. In order to reduce the influence, the target vector is transformed into the state with minimization of cross-polarization. Then a set of new parameters u/v/w are used to characterize scattering mechanisms under the deorientation theory, and the fuzzy membership is adopted instead of "hard" division of parameter plan. Characterizing the sample coherency matrices as complex Wishart distribution, the PolSAR image is clustered based on Bayes maximum likelihood (ML) criteria. Experiment is carried out on an L-band NASA/JPL SIR-C PolSAR image over Danshui town, Guangdong, China. Comparison results with the popular used methods show that the proposed method provides a significant improvement in classification and the associated scattering mechanism of class is more accurate and beneficial for automatic terrain recognition.

Scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) proposed by Lowe has been widely and successfully applied to object detection and recognition. However, the representation ability of SIFT features in face recognition has rarely been investigated systematically. In this paper, we proposed to use the person-specific SIFT features and a simple non-statistical matching strategy combined with local and global similarity on key-points clusters to solve face recognition problems. Large scale experiments on FERET and CAS-PEAL face databases using only one training sample per person have been carried out to compare it with other non person-specific features such as Gabor wavelet feature and local binary pattern feature. The experimental results demonstrate the robustness of SIFT features to expression, accessory and pose variations.

This paper tackles the challenge of interactively retrieving visual scenes within surveillance sequences acquired with fixed camera. Contrarily to today's solutions, we assume that no a-priori knowledge is available so that the system must progressively learn the target scenes thanks to interactive labelling of a few frames by the user. The proposed method is based on very low-cost features extraction and integrates relevance feedback, multiple-instance SVM classification and active learning. Each of these 3 steps runs iteratively over the session, and takes advantage of the progressively increasing training set. Repeatable experiments on both simulated and real data demonstrate the efficiency of the approach and show how it allows reaching high retrieval performances.

We describe a new decomposition algorithm for two-dimensional, polygonal shapes. The algorithm first finds a set of overlapping ribbon-like subshapes ("ribbons") by grouping skeleton fragments into long smooth spines. The parts are then obtained by cutting the ribbons along lines of mutual intersection. With this approach we find part cuts that obey heuristic rules of early vision (M. Singh et a., 1999) without using boundary curvature.

The fractional Fourier transform (FrFT), which is a generalized form of the well-known Fourier transform, has opened up the possibility of a new range of potentially promising and useful applications including radar involving the use and detection of chirp signals, pattern recognition and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image processing. The Chirp Scaling Algorithm (CSA) is one of the most important and well-known radar imaging algorithms. It is attractive because of its excellent focusing ability and implementation simplicity. Benefiting from the inherent structure of the FrFT for non- stationary digital signal processing and analysis, especially for chirped-type signals, a new version of the CSA based on the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) is developed. The introduced Fractional Chirp Scaling Algorithm (FrCSA) applied the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) instead of the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) in the azimuth direction for the analytical development tractability purposes only as it numerically tractable in both dimensions. To demonstrate the resolution and focusing enhancement in the azimuth dimension using the FrCSA and also to be able to perform azimuth fractional filtering, noise removal and flight path nonlinearity compensation, a closed form expression for the azimuth fractional transformation is required. In this talk we present the mathematical derivation for a closed- form expression of the azimuth-fractional Fourier transform of the new FrCSA with application to high resolution imaging. Results to real SAR data images will show significantly enhanced features using the FrFT-based azimuth expression instead of the classical FFT-based one within the fractional chirp scaling algorithm or any other chirped-type SAR imaging algorithm.

This paper outlines recent developments in optical remote sensing of Landsat TM data for air quality monitoring for atmospheric particulate matter having a diameter less than 10-micro meter (PM10). The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the developed algorithm and suitability of remote sensing data for PM10 mapping. We used a DustTrak Aerosol Monitor 8520 to collect in situ data. The PM10 data were collected simultaneously during the satellite Landsat overpass the study area. An algorithm has been developed based on the optical aerosol characteristic in the atmosphere to estimate PM10 over Penang Island, Malaysia. The digital numbers were determined corresponding to the ground-truth locations for each band and then converted to radiance and reflectance values. The atmospheric reflectance values was extracted from the satellite observed reflectance values subtracters by the amount given by the surface reflectance. The surface refleatance values were retrieved using ATCOR2 in the PCI Geomatica 9.1 image processing software. The atmospheric reflectance values were later used for PM10 mapping using the calibrated algorithm. Results from this research have indicated that PM10 data have positive correlation with atmospheric reflectance in two visible bands (Red and Blue band). Finally, the map of pollution concentration generated from the satellite image using the proposed algorithm to illustrate spatial distribution pattern of air pollution for the study area. The proposed algorithm produced high correlation coefficient, R, and low root-mean-square, RMS, values. The concentrations of PM10 are high in the industrial zones and urban areas of Penang, Malaysia.

This paper examines the use of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) in the context of Hyperspectral remote sensing, an imaging technique where hundreds of contiguous energy-bands are used to identify ground materials. The purpose of the study is to select a reduced set of features using an SVM-based algorithm whilst maintaining or improving the target detection accuracy. We use an existing algorithm - the SVM- Confident Margin (SVM-CM), to identify only the necessary spectral bands (features) to discriminate between military targets and backgrounds. A limited selection of bands not only improved computational performance but also sub-pixel detection accuracy. The results were evaluated through a multiple regression framework used for sub-pixel detection. An optimal 59 bands out of 128 was selected from SVM- CM for which all 12 targets were detected at a false- detection cost that was 270 times less than the all-band case. All testing were carried out on Multi-Sensor Trial data (MUST 2000) involving military targets.

Due to the disturbances of spatters,dusts and strong arc light,it is difficult to detect the weld pool edge in laser welding *** image sensing system for the ND:YAG laser welding process is introduced in *** processing and pattern recognition in the system are first used to obtain information from the laser welding process for Tailed Weld Blanks.A new way is employed to preprocess the image of the laser welding in order to detect effectively the edge of weld pool in Tailed Weld *** image of the weld pool was processed using a series of methods:image truncation,Bi-level thresholding,median filter and edge *** experimental results show that better performance to extract the edge of the weld pool can be obtained by using the new *** proposed edge detection approach can reach not only perfect edge detection result but also good robustness to noise in TWB. Experiments also show that using the welding monitor system to control the ND:YAG laser welding quality for stainless steel is an effective method.
