The main challenge for the retrieval of information using hyperspectral. sensors is that due to the high dimensionality provided by them there is not comparably enough, a priori data to produce well-estimated parameters to solve our detection problem. This lack of enough a priori information for an estimation yields to a rank-deficient problem. As a consequence, this leads to an increment in false alarms and increase in the probability of missing throughout the classification process. An approach based on a regularization technique applied to the data collected from the hyperspectral sensor is used to simultaneously minimize the probabilities of false alarms and missing. This procedure is implemented using algorithms that apply regularization techniques by biasing the covariance matrix, which enable the simultaneous reduction of the probability of false alarm and the decrease of the probability of missing;thus, enhancing the Maximum Likelihood parameter estimation.

This paper proposes a geographical information system for terrain and obstacle awareness and alerting that extracts information from high-resolution satellite images. On-board terrain elevation databases are being increasingly used in aircraft terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS), offering a step change in capability from the radar altimeter-based ground proximity warning system. However, to enhance the safety of flight of small aircraft and helicopters, in addition to pure topographic information a TAWS database should also contain significant man-made obstacles that present a collision hazard, such tall buildings and chimneys, communications masts and electrical power transmission lines. Another issue is keeping the terrain and obstacle database current, reflecting changes to features over time. High-resolution stereoscopic images remotely sensed from Earth orbit have great potential for addressing these issues. In this paper, some critical items are discussed and effective information processing schemes for extracting information relevant to flight safety from satellite images are proposed.

Current pulsed laser radar systems for ranging purposes are based on time-of-flight techniques. Nowadays first pulse as well as last pulse exploitation is used for different application, e.g. urban planning, forestry surveying. Besides this technique of time measurement the complete signal form over the time might be of interest, because it includes the backscattering characteristic of the illuminated field. This characteristic can be used for estimating the aspect angle of a plane with special surface property or estimating the surface property of a plane with a special aspect angle. In this paper a monostatic bi-directional experimental system with a fast digitizing receiver is described. The spatio-temporal beam propagation, the spatial reflectance of the surface, and receiver properties are modeled. A time dependent description of the received signal power is derived and our special surface property is considered. The transversal spatial distribution of the used laser beam was measured and displayed by the beam profile. For a plane surface under various aspect angles the transversal spatial distributions of the beam were simulated and measured. For these angles the corresponding temporal beam distributions were measured and compared with their pulse widths. The pulse spread is used to estimate the aspect angle of the illuminated object. The statistics for different angles was calculated. Different approaches which detect a characteristic time value were compared and evaluated. The consideration of the signal form allows a more precise determination of the time-of-flight. A 3-d visualization of equi-irradiance surfaces allows to assess the spatio-temporal shape of the pulses.

Thresholding color video images is challenging because of the low spatial resolution and the complex backgrounds. This paper investigates the issue of thresholding these images by reducing the number of colors in order to improve automated text detection and recognition. An unsupervised thresholding approach is presented which reduces the background complexity while retaining the important text character pixels. The experiments show that our proposed thresholding approach performs significantly better than simple image histogram-based methods which generally do not produce satisfactory results.

The ability to rapidly detect and identify potential targets both fixed and mobile from multiple sensor feeds is a critical function in network centric warfare. In this paper we describe the use of image Differencing and 3D terrain database editing in order to fuse oblique aerial photos, IR sensor imagery, and other non-traditional data sources to produce battlefield metrics that support network centric operations. Such metrics include target detection, recognition, and location, and improved knowledge of the target environment. Key to our approach is the rapid generation of target and background signatures from high-resolution 1-meter object descriptor terrain databases. This technique utilizes the difference between measured and calculated sensor images to 1) update and correct knowledge of the terrain background, 2) register multi sensor imagery 3) identify potential/candidate targets based on residual image differencing and 3) measure and report target locations based on scene matching. The technique is especially suited for utilizing imagery from reconnaissance and remotely piloted vehicle sensors. It also holds promise for automation and real-time data reduction of battlefield sensor feeds and for improving now-time situational awareness. We will present the algorithms and approach utilized in the image Differencing technique. We will also describe the software developed to implement the approach. Lastly we will present the results of experiments and benchmarks conducted to identify and measure target locations in test locations at Ft. Hood, TX and Ft. Hunter Liggett, CA.

image fusion refers to the techniques that integrate complementary information from multiple image sensor data such that the new images are more suitable for the purpose of human visual perception and the compute processing tasks. in this paper, a new image fusion algorithm based on wavelet packet transform to fuse multisensor images is presented. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) can offer a more precise way for image analysis than other multi-resolution analysis. It decomposes an image into low frequency band and high frequency band in different level, and it can also be reconstructed gradually in different level. But this method only decomposes low frequency band in a higher scale, so that it omits some useful details of the images. In this paper, we present a new image fusion algorithm. In the algorithm, we use discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT) to decompose and reconstruct the images. When images are merged in wavelet packet space, different frequency ranges are processed differently. It can merge information from original images adequately and improve abilities of information analysis and feature extraction. This image fusion is performed at the pixel level. In this fusion algorithm, a feature-based fusion rule is used to combine original subimages and to form a pyramid for the fused image. Through merging remote sensing images from multi-sensor to a same object by applying method of wavelet packet analysis, we have obtained a fused picture. In this paper, mutual information is employed as a means of objective assessing image fusion performance. The experiment results show that this fusion algorithm, based on wavelet packet transform, is an effective approach in image fusion area.

Current pulsed laser radar systems for topographic applications are based on time-of-flight ranging techniques to determine the range of the illuminated object. The signal analysis to determine the time-of-flight typically operates with analogous threshold detection. In this paper we describe investigations for digital recording of received laser pulses and a detailed analysis of the pulse waveform. Recording the complete signal is advantageous because it allows processing depending on different tasks, respecting intermediate results, and considering neighbourhood relations. Two different techniques for measurement of time resolved laser pulses are presented. An experimental system for a fast recording of signals was constructed. For principal investigations a test board with urban materials was measured by single photon detection technique and visualized by a data cube. Based on these spatio-temporal data, different features are extracted and depicted by grey value images to describe macro, meso, and micro structures. Measurements were carried out with partial occlusion of the test board by vegetation. Multiple reflections are counted by processing the data cube using a spatio-temporal filter and peak detector. Neural networks have been widely used in remote sensing image classification. In this paper, we exploited the spatial information of the image to decide the classification result and proposed a remote sensing image classification method based on D-S evidence theory and neural networks. First, the original image to be classified is smoothed with the smoothed image obtained. Next, a B-P neural network is used to train and classify the original image and its smoothed image separately. Next, the two classification results (decisions) of the B-P neural network are fused with evidence theory. Finally, the fused result is as the final classification result of the original image. Experiment results show that the new method is efficient and improves the classification accuracy largely.

In this paper we present some laboratory measurements obtained by a new imaging interferometer. This instrument has been derived from the so called "stationary interferometers", which do not employ any moving part to optically scan the instrument field-of-view. The device acquires the image of an object superimposed to a fixed (stationary) pattern of autocorrelation functions of the energy coming from each pixel. The interference pattern, constituted by a system of vertical fringes, is scanned by moving the observed target with respect to the imaging device. In order to calibrate the optical-path-difference axis of the raw interferograms, we have executed a set of measurements employing an He-Ne laser source spread by a pair of planar diffusers. The dependence of the optical-path-difference values on the source spectral content has been addressed performing a set of measurements after filtering a 600W halogen lamp with interference filters of 10nm bandwidth. We have described the procedure of pre-processing of the acquired data to retrieve the spectrum of at-sensor radiance (dark signal subtraction, spectral instrument response compensation, effects of vignetting and Fourier transform algorithm). Some hints are given about the use of this instrument from airborne platforms for remote sensing of the Earth.

In this paper, a new embedded wavelet packet image coder algorithm is proposed for an effective image coder using correlation between partitioned coefficients. This new algorithm presents parent-child relationship for reducing image reconstruction error using relations between individual frequency sub-bands. By parent-child relationships, every coefficient is partitioned and encoded for the zerotree data structure. It is shown that the proposed wavelet packet image coder algorithm achieves lower bit rates than SPIHT. It also demonstrates higher PSNR under the same bit rate. The perfect rate control is compared with the conventional methods. These results show that the encoding and decoding processes of the proposed coder are simpler and more accurate than the conventional ones for texture images that include many mid and high-frequency elements such as aerial and satellite photograph images. The experimental results imply the possibility that the proposed method can be applied to real-time vision system, on-line image processing and image fusion which require smaller file size and better resolution. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.
