A variety of techniques exist for change detection of multitemporal remotely sensed satellite data. The Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS) color space is very useful for imageprocessing because it separates the color information in ways that correspond to the human visual system's response. In this study, a novel approach, emphasizing the use of the hue component of the IHS transformations of Landsat data, is proposed and examined for multitemporal change detection. Two Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes acquired on 1987 and 1997 covering the western part of El-Fayoum area and El-Rayan lakes in Egypt have been processed (geometrically corrected and radiometrically balanced) and transformed to the IHS space. The results of using the hue component in detecting the changes are very promising. A number of changed areas including water and agriculture land were successfully detected. The used color theme print, which display the spatial pattern of change in map form, was of great significance in interpreting the environmental changes and the statistical estimation of these changes has been carried out as well.

The main concept behind this paper is that pattern and processes are linked in a mutual way. In the last decades landscape ecology was dominated by quantitative descriptions (landscape metrics) of the landscape under concern and its components. Now there is a growing interest in the cause-effect-relationships between these environmental characteristics. High-resolution aerial photography hold an important amount of valuable information, but until recently only a little proportion of the entire information was usually used in scientific analyses due to conceptual and technical limitations. In this paper we present results derived with a multi-scale image segmentation approach and it is demonstrated how this approach allows for an identification of pattern at several scales simultaneously. First results testify that this is a suitable method for the delineation of meaningful landscape elements and subsequently for landscape monitoring, particularly if dealing with complex or small-scaled pattern. It is shown that hierarchically linked objects are more suitable for monitoring than pixels although the necessity for a comprehensive methodology for object-based change detection arises.

Spatially varying sensing (foveation) was first used as a means for image compression in our past research [1]. In this report we extend previous work by us to address the advantages of foveation in improving the performance of interactive 3D visualization over bandwidth limited channels, such as the Internet. We develop an algorithm that is implemented in JAVA3D. The method combines foveating JPEG texture files with level-of-detail representation in JAVA3D. Applications of the work include model based coding following the Synthetic-Natural Hybrid (SNHC) paradigm in MPEG-4 to Electronic Commerce with 3D visualization of merchandise. MultiSpec is a multispectral image data analysis software application. it is intended to provide a fast, easy-to-use means for analysis of multispectral image data, such as that from the Landsat, SPOT, MODIS or IKONOS series of Earth observational satellites, hyperspectral data such as that from the Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and EO-1 Hyperion satellite system or the data that will be produced by the next generation of Earth observational sensors. The primary purpose for the system was to make new, otherwise complex analysis tools available to the general Earth science community. It has also found use in displaying and analyzing many other types of non-space related digital imagery, such as medical image data and in K-12 and university level educational activities. MultiSpec has been implemented for both the Apple Macintosh(R) and Microsoft Windows(R) operating systems-(OS). The effort was first begun on the Macintosh OS in 1988. The GLOBE (http://***) program supported the development of a subset of MultiSpec for the Windows OS in 1995. Since then most (but not all) of the features in the Macintosh OS version have been ported to the Windows OS version. With the development of remotesensing technique, onboard data compression has become an urgent need and a lot of study has been directed toward the development of efficient techniques. In this paper, the construction approach of integer Haar is discussed briefly, and a simple image compression scheme based on the integer Haar wavelet transform and block DPCM is proposed. The scheme can be easily designed for data processing in real-time systems of remotesensing with parallel algorithms. Simulation experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is a efficient image compression method.
